Chapter 19

Just as they're getting ready to leave, there's a loud sobbing from upstairs, and everyone takes it to mean Hannah finally woke up. Castiel stands up, then pauses with the realization that he can't just explore the whole house without permission.

Fortunately for him, Jody seems to know what he's thinking, because she waves him on. "She's probably looking for you."

Castiel gives her a small smile before taking off upstairs. Though they purposely left the door to her new room open, Castiel still knocks on the wall before entering. If Dean is anything to go by, people don't like when others barge into their rooms without permission.

Hannah stops crying when she sees him, and she immediately runs over to him and wraps her arms around him. Castiel pats her back soothingly. He didn't care too much at first about whether she would wake up before he left, but now that she has, he wouldn't have it any other way.

"I thought you left me," Hannah whispers.

"Of course not," Castiel says as though that hadn't been the plan until two minutes ago. "I couldn't go without saying goodbye."

"I don't want you to go."

"I know," Castiel says. "But I have to. There are other demons hurting other little girls' families that I have to stop."

Hannah sniffles. "Are you going to find a new girl to replace me?"

"Never," Castiel says immediately. "No one could replace you." He gently removes her arms and takes her hand. "Come with me. There's someone I want you to meet."

Hannah follows him down the stairs, and Castiel has to walk slowly so she can keep up with her legs that are only half the size of his. He leads her into the dining room, where everyone is waiting anxiously to meet her.

Castiel crouches down next to her. "You remember Emma and James, right?"

She nods silently as they wave.

"Well, Emma and James are going to come with me," Castiel says, "but that means you get to stay with some of my oldest friends."

Hannah looks up at him nervously.

"That's Jody," he says, pointing in her direction. "She's a sheriff, which means she can keep you nice and safe."

"Hi," Jody says with a wave, and Hannah immediately looks away.

"And that's Claire," Castiel says, gesturing in her direction with his head. "She's kind of like my daughter." It's probably easier to explain it without bringing his vessel into the conversation.

"And now," Claire says, "I'm like your new big sister."

Hannah looks between Jody and Claire for a few moments, then bursts into tears. Castiel pulls her into a hug, and she buries her face in his chest, tears staining his white dress shirt. Castiel rubs her back, whispering words of encouragement in her ear, even though he knows they don't mean much.

Without another word, Claire runs up the stairs. Castiel and Jody share a confused look, each hoping for an explanation that the other doesn't have. Hannah doesn't even seem to notice that she's gone.

When Claire returns, she's holding something behind her back. She sits down on the floor facing Castiel and Hannah and crosses her legs. "Hey, Hannah, I have a present for you."

Hannah slowly steps away from Castiel to look at her warily.

Claire pulls out a stuffed Grumpy Cat from behind her back. "Castiel gave this to me years ago, when I first moved in here. Now I'm gonna give it to you."

Hannah eyes her nervously before slowly walking towards her. Claire hands her the stuffed animal, and Hannah hugs it close as she walks back to Castiel.

"You kept it," Castiel says with a small smile.

"Of course I kept it, you big dork," Claire says. "It's been sitting in my room for years." She looks over at Hannah and adds, "but I think I might have found him a better home."

Hannah just hugs the cat tighter.

"We're going to go, okay?" Castiel says, directing his comment to Hannah.

Hannah starts crying again at that, and Castiel is left trying to come up with something to calm her down.

"Are you religious?" Castiel asks after a pause, earning a confused look from the girl. "Do you pray to God and Jesus and the Virgin Mary?" The fact that she immediately asked if he was an angel when he saved her certainly gave off that impression.

Hannah nods.

"Did you know that you can pray to angels, too?"

Her eyes widen at that, which he takes as a good sign.

"So if you ever need to talk to me about anything, you can do it then and there," Castiel says. "And I'll hear every word. I might not be able to answer you right then because I don't have my own cell phone, but when I get one, I can call you and we can talk about whatever you want. You can tell me about all the fun things you did with Jody and Claire and Alex."

"And you can tell me about all the other little girls you save?" Hannah asks.

"Of course," Castiel says, with no intention of following through with that part of it. "And we'll come back and visit every chance we get. Does that sound okay?"

Hannah nods.

"Good." Castiel presses a kiss to the top of her head. "And one more thing."

She looks at him expectantly.

"Can you promise to never, ever pray to God again?"

She looks at him for a moment, confused. "But He's God."

"He is, you're right," Castiel says. "But, you see, God doesn't really like me, and He's trying to hurt some of my friends right now. I don't want Him to go after you, too. So please, promise me you won't pray to him."

"Why doesn't God like you?" Hannah asks.

Castiel hesitates. How does he answer this in child-friendly terms? He highly doubts a discussion about free will or the lack thereof would make much sense to her. So maybe he'll have to simplify it a little bit.

"Well, He killed a really good friend of mine," Castiel says. "And me and my other friends didn't like that, so my friend tried to shoot Him —"

"You shot God?"

"Well, I didn't," Castiel says. "Which is why I think you're okay. But it's not a risk I want to take."

"Okay," she says. "Then I won't pray to God. I'll just pray to you and you and you and only you!"

Castiel chuckles. "Good. I'm glad." He gives her another kiss on the forehead. "I'll be back. I promise."

"I love you, Castiel."

"I love you, too."
