Chapter 63

Chapter 63:
Everything That Matters

The morning had started with a heaviness she was learning to carry quietly. She had woken up to an empty side of the bed again. The sheets were cold, undisturbed for hours. Harry hadn't come home the night before. Or if he had, he'd come in so late and left so early that she hadn't heard him - which, in some ways, hurt even more. It had become a pattern now: his presence felt like a guest visiting, his apologies soft and sincere, yet never quite translating into change.

But she didn't let it break her. Not today. Not when there was someone else who needed her to be strong.

She walked into Ethan's room with a gentle smile fixed firmly in place, balancing a tray of warm porridge and juice. She'd noticed he seemed quiet the evening before - just a little sniffle, nothing alarming. But when she reached his bedside and pulled back the curtain, her heart sank.

He was shivering beneath his favorite dinosaur comforter, his cheeks flushed an angry, unnatural red. When she touched his forehead, it burned against her palm.

"Ethan?" Her voice trembled. She shook his shoulder gently. "Baby, open your eyes for Mommy, please."

His eyelids fluttered but stayed closed. His chest rose and fell too quickly, too shallowly - like he was climbing something steep and couldn't catch his breath.

Panic bloomed in her chest, sharp and cold. She scooped him up instantly. He felt so small, so fragile, his weight pressing against her in a way that made her realize just how much she had to lose.

Harry wasn't home. The house was silent. Just her and her son. And in that moment, she felt the full weight of everything she had been carrying alone. She reached for her phone, her fingers hovering over his contact - but then she pulled her hand back. She didn't have time to wait. She had to move.

She packed frantically - his little dinosaur blanket, his favorite stuffed bear, his medicine - her vision blurring with tears she refused to let fall. She carried him out to the car, tucking him securely against her chest before strapping him into his seat. The morning sun seemed too bright, the world too normal, when inside her chest everything felt like it was shattering.

She drove through the streets of Makati with tears streaming freely now, ignoring the traffic signals, the horns, the world rushing past. Nothing existed except the small boy in the backseat and the desperate rhythm of her own heartbeat screaming get him there, get him there, keep him safe.

"You're okay, Ethan," she whispered, glancing at him in the rearview mirror. "Mommy's here. I've got you. Just hold on, my brave boy."

She didn't call Harry until she was walking through the hospital doors. And when she finally did, her voice broke completely.

"Please... come quickly. Something's wrong with Ethan."

The wait in the hospital corridor stretched into hours. Every minute felt like a lifetime. Nurses hurried past; families sat in hushed conversations. And Kathalina sat there alone, holding herself, fighting the terrifying thought that she might not be enough to keep him here.

That fear wasn't new. It was rooted deep in her bones - the quiet, unspoken terror that if she lost Ethan, she would have absolutely nothing left. She wasn't staying in this marriage because she was afraid of losing Harry. She had already accepted that she might have lost parts of him long ago. She was staying because of this - the quiet hope that her son would grow up knowing what she never had.

She had grown up without a father in the picture. She couldn't remember a single memory of him. No voice, no laugh, no hand reaching down to lift her onto his shoulders. Just silence. An empty chair at every table. A shadow she could never quite name. And growing up, watching Olivia - whose family, whose home, whose foundation had always felt so solid - something inside her had ached. It wasn't envy exactly. It was longing. The quiet, desperate wish that she could give her son what she herself had never known: a complete family. A home that didn't feel like it was held together only by her own two hands.

She looked at her reflection in the hospital window - eyes red, shoulders tense - and whispered the truth to herself:

I'm not doing this for him. I'm doing this for Ethan. I want him to know what it feels like to have both parents in his life. I want him to have memories I never got to have. If I have to carry this weight alone sometimes, that's okay. That's my job. That's what love looks like, even when it's quiet and even when it hurts.

But as the minutes ticked by and the ICU doors remained closed, that strength wavered. What if being together wasn't enough if they were all unhappy? What if a complete family wasn't what she was actually building? What if she was just teaching him that love means waiting for someone to come home?

Then she heard his footsteps - hurried, familiar, breathless. She looked up and saw Harry rounding the corner. He didn't look like a husband arriving at his wife's side. He looked like a man realizing exactly how much he stood to lose. He crossed the hallway in seconds and dropped to his knees beside her chair, taking both her trembling hands in his.

"Kath... I'm here. I'm so sorry I wasn't here sooner."

The concern in his eyes was genuine, but it came too late for the nights she had already spent awake alone. For the mornings she had faced alone. For the fears she had learned to swallow down because she had no one else to tell.

"He's in there, Harry," she said, her voice steadying itself through the tears. "And whatever happens... I need you to understand something. I didn't stay because I was afraid of being alone. I stayed because I wanted Ethan to have what I never did. A father. A home. The kind of family I used to watch Olivia have and wondered what it must feel like."

She looked him in the eyes, and for the first time in a long time, she wasn't pleading for his love. She was simply stating her truth.

"But I also realized something today... as long as Ethan is okay, that's enough for me. If I have to be both his mother and his father... I will be. I don't need a perfect family. I just need him. Healthy. Here. Breathing. That's all I need in this world."

Harry stared at her, something shifting in his expression - realization, regret, admiration, all tangled together as he finally understood the woman sitting beside him. She wasn't clinging to him out of weakness. She had been holding everything together out of love for someone else.

"He's going to be okay, Kath," he said softly, pressing his forehead against their joined hands. "Our son is going to be okay. And when he is... I promise you, I'm going to be the father you both deserve. I swear it."
