Chapter 61
Chapter 61:
The Familiar Cycle
His face drew nearer, slow and deliberate, until the space between them felt impossibly small. Those striking green eyes held hers - warm, searching, mesmerizing - and Olivia found herself leaning in without even realizing it, her heart thrumming wildly against her ribs.
Is he going to kiss me?
For a heartbeat, everything else faded. The room, the world, the weight of the years apart - all of it vanished. She had dreamed of this moment for so long, wondered if she would ever again feel the warmth of him this close, the familiar gentle touch she had carried in her memory like a secret. Her lips parted almost instinctively, waiting, aching for something she had longed for more than she cared to admit.
And then -
BAM!
The front door slammed open, the sound cracking through the quiet apartment like thunder. They sprang apart as if jolted awake, breathless, their faces heating with a sudden, awkward flush.
"Ker, I'm home!"
Andrei's voice rang out - bright, cheerful, completely unaware - echoing through the hallway.
Olivia bit back a frustrated sigh. Of course. Right now. Exactly now. She watched Harry shift in his seat, running a hand nervously through his hair, the fragile spell between them dissolving as quickly as it had formed. She smoothed her palms over her thighs, trying to steady her racing heart, as steady footsteps approached the kitchen.
"Ker, I brought those chocolate muffins you love - still warm from the bakery down the street!" Andrei called out, appearing in the doorway with a paper bag in one hand and that familiar easy smile on his face.
But the smile faltered the moment his eyes landed on Harry. It didn't vanish all at once - it simply dimmed, fading slowly into something quiet and unreadable. His gaze moved to Olivia, and the question in his expression needed no words. What is he doing here?
She opened her mouth, ready with a dozen defenses - He was just leaving. We were only talking. It's none of your business - but the words caught in her throat. Because beneath his quiet hurt, she saw something else: the fear that he was losing her, not to an argument or a mistake, but to a memory he could never compete with. And she realized with a sharp pang that she couldn't be selfish. Not with him. Not with the one person who had never once walked away.
"Drei," she said gently, gesturing to the table. "Please... stay and eat with us. There's more than enough."
He shook his head, his gaze dropping to the floor.
"No," he said, his voice low and tight. "I'm just... really tired. I think I'll turn in early."
He turned and walked away - not angrily, not dramatically. Just quietly, shoulders slightly hunched, carrying a weight that wasn't his to carry. Moments later, the door to his room clicked shut. Not slammed. Just closed. But the sound felt louder than any shout.
Olivia looked down at the table - the steaming bowl of chicken soup, the golden-topped lasagna still releasing its gentle warmth. Both were his favorites, recipes Amy had taught her herself, saying "Food is just love you can taste, my dear." She had planned to pack them up, to bring them to the hospital tomorrow morning as a quiet comfort. Now they sat there, untouched, growing cold.
Her throat tightened. Hot tears welled in her eyes before she could stop them, tracing quiet paths down her cheeks.
"Liv? Are you alright?" Harry asked softly.
She wiped quickly at her face, forcing a smile that felt thin and fragile.
"Yes," she whispered. "I'm fine. Just a long day, that's all."
Why am I crying? she wondered, confused. I haven't done anything wrong. Harry is here. The person I've loved for years is sitting right across from me. I should be happy. So why does it feel like I've just broken something precious?
She pushed the feeling aside, straightened her shoulders, and lifted her chin.
"Let's eat," she said, and her voice was steadier this time. Harry smiled back at her - that soft, familiar smile that had once been her entire world - and slowly, conversation returned. They laughed about old times, spoke of people they used to know, and for a while, it felt almost like coming home.
But then, as he spoke, something shifted inside her. A quiet realization began to take shape, clear and unsettling.
Haven't I sat exactly like this before?
The thought stopped her mid-laugh. She set her fork down gently beside her plate.
The stolen moments. The hushed conversations. The way I tell myself this time will be different - and then it isn't. The quiet dread that at any moment, he will remember he has somewhere else to be. The way I forgive him before he even asks, just because he looked at me like I mattered.
She watched him for a moment longer - the way his eyes lit up when he spoke, the familiar gesture of his hand as he brushed back his hair - and her heart sank. Because she wasn't moving forward. She was simply retracing the same steps, walking in circles around the same old heartache.
And then there was Andrei - walking away tonight because he couldn't bear to watch. She had been exactly where he stood. She had waited, hoped, lingered in the background while someone else got the first place she longed for. And now... she was doing it to him. She was becoming the very thing that had hurt her most.
If I keep doing this, she thought, her chest aching with a sudden, quiet clarity, I will never be first. I will always be the moment he steals when he feels lost, not the home he returns to when he finds his way.
She looked at Harry - really looked at him - and the happiness in her chest felt suddenly heavy, fragile as glass. Because she knew, deep down, that as long as her happiness depended on his choice, she would never truly be free. She would just keep waiting, hoping, hurting - trapped in the same cycle she had been caught in for years.
But she pushed the thought away. Just for tonight. Just for these few hours where he was here, across from her, choosing to stay a little while longer.
Tomorrow I'll think about tomorrow, she told herself, her heart trembling with a quiet hope she couldn't quite let go of. Tonight, he's here. And maybe... just maybe... this time he'll finally stay.
