Chapter 53

Chapter 53:
Caught Between Yesterday and What If

The warm glow of string lights crisscrossed above the courtyard, casting soft golden light over the familiar faces gathered around the long wooden table. Laughter drifted through the evening air, easy and comfortable - the kind that only comes with people who have known you since you were young and foolish. Harry stepped forward, and Niall was already on his feet, a wide, genuine grin spreading across his face as he closed the distance between them.

"Harry, mate! It's been forever!"

They pulled each other into a firm embrace, clapping one another firmly on the back, and Harry felt a genuine, quiet smile touch his lips. These were the friends who had seen him through every awkward phase, every teenage heartbreak, every uncertain moment of growing up. Seeing them felt like breathing air he hadn't realized he'd been holding.

"You look successful," Niall observed, stepping back to look him over. "But also... like you've been carrying the world on your shoulders."

Harry didn't answer that. He just offered a faint smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

Louis leaned forward, his expression shifting from amusement to something more serious. "We heard things, Harry. That you got married. Then that it ended. And you didn't tell any of us a single thing? We thought you'd vanished off the face of the earth."

"There was a lot going on," Harry said evasively, his fingers tapping nervously against the side of his glass. "Personal family matters I had to sort through. I needed space."

Liam pulled him into a gentle hug, his voice low and concerned. "You disappeared right after the second semester ended. No goodbye, no message. We were genuinely worried about you, man."

"I know," Harry said quietly. "I'm sorry. I just... I wasn't ready to talk about it then. And maybe I'm still not."

"Well, you're here now," Louis said, raising his bottle in a toast. "That's all that matters. You're okay. That's enough for us."

"And you?" Harry asked, turning the focus away from himself. "You look like a man who's been well and truly tamed."

Louis rolled his eyes dramatically, though a soft, private smile touched his lips. "Guilty. Got married last year."

"No way!" Harry laughed, his surprise genuine. "To who? Don't tell me it's someone we know?"

"Eleanor."

Harry's eyes widened. "Eleanor Sanders? That Eleanor Sanders? The one you argued with every single day? The one you swore was the most stubborn, infuriating person you'd ever met?"

"People change," Louis said simply. "Or maybe we just grow into the people we were always meant to be - together."

"That's honestly the last thing I expected," Harry shook his head, still grinning. "Good for you though. Truly."

"So what actually happened?" Niall asked casually, leaning his chin on his hand. "Why did you really leave London all those years ago?"

Harry took a slow sip of his drink, the bitterness rising even above the taste of the alcohol. "Just... complications. Things I couldn't fix. People I couldn't save." It wasn't a lie. But it wasn't the truth either.

Liam watched him carefully, his gaze steady and knowing. "Well. Whatever it was, I'm glad you found your way back. Even if you're keeping your secrets."

"And we heard another thing," Niall continued, his tone light but curious. "Word is you're with Kathalina now? The girl we all dared you to ask out senior year? Remember that stupid bet?"

Harry shifted uncomfortably in his seat. That dare had been a meaningless joke back then. It felt heavy now - like a chain he hadn't meant to fasten around his own neck. "Kathalina. And yes. We're engaged. We have a son together."

"Engaged?! That's huge, Harry!"

"It feels... right," he said, though the words tasted strange coming off his tongue. "She's good. She's steady. We're building something real."

"Good," Liam said firmly. "That's what matters. Someone who stays when things get hard."

"And how about you?" Harry asked quickly, turning to Niall. "Still with Kate?"

Louis laughed, grabbing Niall's hand and holding it up to show the simple band on his finger. "Would you believe it? This one actually did it."

"She's loud," Niall admitted, shaking his head but smiling helplessly. "She talks too much, she argues with everyone, and she never backs down. But she's also the first person I want to tell everything to at the end of every day. Go figure."

They laughed together, and for a moment, Harry almost felt like he belonged here again - like the years hadn't pulled them all in different directions.

And then someone spoke her name.

"Olivia!"

It wasn't loud, just a warm call from someone near the entrance - but it hit Harry like a physical force. His heart hammered against his ribs, suddenly racing as if he'd been running. His breath caught in his throat, and his fingers tightened around his glass until his knuckles turned white. Excitement tangled with fear tangled with a desperate, aching longing that he hadn't realized was still buried so close to the surface.

Slowly, one by one, his friends turned to look behind him. But Harry stayed exactly where he was - frozen, unable to move, unable to look away from the sound of her name.

Then she stepped into view.

Olivia.

Time seemed to slow down as she walked toward them. She looked different - mature, composed, carrying herself with a quiet strength that hadn't been there before. Her hair fell in soft waves, her clothes elegant but simple, and she moved with a calm assurance that took his breath away. But it was her eyes that struck him deepest - those bright blue eyes he had once known every shade of were now darker, guarded, clouded by years of experience and pain he hadn't been there to witness. Yet when they met his, something shifted. For just a heartbeat, the years fell away, and he felt exactly the same confused, foolish pull he always had.

"Hello everyone," she said, her voice steady and warm. "Long time no see."

There was a polite, slightly awkward round of greetings. Everyone seemed to sense the weight in the air, the unspoken history settling between them like dust. She moved gracefully to the empty seat at the end of their table, and Harry couldn't tear his eyes away from her. He told himself he should look away. That he had no right to stare. But he couldn't.

When she turned her gaze fully to him, her expression was calm - unreadable, almost distant. "Harry. It's good to see you."

"You too," he managed, his voice rougher than he intended. "Long time, Olivia."

She nodded once, then sat, smoothing her skirt gently, and turned her attention to the others - leaving him sitting there, feeling like a puzzle piece that no longer quite fit anywhere.

His mind began to war with itself, loud and relentless:

She lied to you, Harry. Four years. Your entire marriage was built on a misunderstanding she let you believe. She let you love a version of her that never really existed.

But look at her. She's changed. She's not that girl anymore. And neither are you.

You have Kathalina. She's at home right now, probably wondering when you'll be back. She's raised your son alone when you couldn't be there. She's loved you honestly, openly, without games. Don't you dare hurt her again.

But what if honest isn't enough? What if my heart just belongs somewhere else, even when my head knows it shouldn't?

He took a sharp breath, feeling utterly unraveled. Maybe he had loved Kathalina once - truly, deeply. But seeing Olivia again, sitting there across the table, calm and beautiful and unreachable... it was like realizing he'd been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole for years, telling himself it was working.

Does that make me a terrible person?

Because the terrifying truth was simple and unavoidable: he still wanted her.

Four years hadn't erased it. Distance hadn't dulled it. Knowing the truth hadn't killed it. And that realization - that he was still this weak where she was concerned - filled him with frustration, anger, and self-loathing all at once. He was angry at himself for not being able to choose. Angry that one look at her could undo months of progress. Angry that he had built a life with Kathalina while a part of him had never truly left the past behind.

So now what?

Do I walk away from Kathalina and Ethan - the people who gave me a home when I had nowhere else - for a woman who deceived me for years? Do I stay, knowing that every time I close my eyes I'll see Olivia's face across this table tonight? Do I try to forgive Olivia - not because she's earned it, but because my own heart is too stubborn to let her go? And even if I did... would I just be repeating the same mistakes all over again?

Luke's words echoed in his mind, sharp and unignorable:

"You can't have both of them, Harry. And if you keep one foot in each world, you'll just keep hurting them - and yourself - over and over again."

Harry looked from Olivia - sitting quietly across from him, looking like a stranger and a memory all at once - down to his phone resting on the table, where he knew Kathalina might send a gentle text asking if he was alright. And he realized with a sinking, heavy feeling in his chest that he didn't have an answer. He didn't know who he was. He didn't know what he wanted. He was just... stuck. Caught between a past that was painful to remember and a future he wasn't sure he truly wanted, too afraid to lose either one to actually choose.

And the saddest, most frustrating truth of all? He didn't even realize that by refusing to choose, he was already losing both of them - one heartbeat at a time.
