Chapter 41

Chapter 41:
The Ghost Between Us

"Harry?" Her voice was barely a whisper, trembling slightly in the soft, dim glow of the bedside lamp.

He turned toward her, his arm instinctively wrapping a little tighter around her shoulders. "Yes, love. I'm right here."

She shifted closer, burying her face against his chest, her breath warm and shaky against his skin. Her fingers traced slow, nervous patterns over his hand where it rested around her waist.

"Can you promise me something?" she asked, her voice so quiet he almost didn't catch it.

He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her head. "Anything. You know I'd promise you the world if I could."

There was a small pause, and then she spoke again, sounding younger, more vulnerable than he had ever heard her.

"Promise me... you'll never leave me for Kathalina."

The name settled in the quiet room, familiar and yet strangely unsettling. Harry frowned, his brows drawing together in confusion. Kathalina? Why would she say that? Why would she be afraid of the woman who was practically a stranger to her world back then? He pulled back just enough to look at her face, to ask her what she meant - but her grip on his hand tightened, her eyes fluttering shut as tears glistened in the corners. And the question died on his lips. She looked so peaceful, so fragile, so terrified of something he couldn't see. How could he ask her when she was already hurting so much just thinking about it?

He smoothed her hair back gently from her forehead, his heart aching for her even in the dream.

"I promise," he whispered, his voice soft and steady in the darkness. "I will never leave you for anyone. Especially not her. You have my heart, Olivia. Only yours. Always."

She seemed to relax then, melting back against him as if his words had chased away her worst fears. But the name kept echoing somewhere in the back of his mind - a faint, uneasy shadow that lingered even as he drifted back to sleep.

Harry jolted awake, his heart pounding painfully against his ribs. Morning sunlight streamed through the curtains, bright and unforgiving, and for a disorienting moment, he could still feel her beside him, still hear her voice whispering that name in the dark.

Kathalina.

He sat there breathing heavily, staring at the empty space on the mattress beside him. The dream felt different now that he was awake - not just strange, but prophetic in a way that made his chest feel tight. Olivia had been afraid of the wrong thing all along. She'd feared being replaced by Kathalina, when in reality... Kathalina was the one living in the shadow of a memory that wouldn't fade.

Why did this keep happening? Why did his mind cling to Olivia even when she was gone? Why did seeing her with someone else yesterday feel like something sharp had pierced straight through his chest? He told himself it was just pride - just the shock of seeing her move on. But that didn't explain the ache that wouldn't go away. That didn't explain why every part of him wanted to march back there and tell her she was still his.

He rubbed his face with both hands, and the memories of last night came rushing back - the bitterness, the way he'd drunk until the edges of the world blurred, the anger that had driven him to her door. Andrei hadn't deserved any of it. He'd just been there when Harry couldn't stand the thought of anyone else standing in that doorway. The man had held back, too - Harry had noticed. He could have done real damage, but he hadn't. And Harry had still lashed out at him. Shame burned hotter than the hangover.

And then there was Kathalina. The memory made his stomach twist. He'd come home broken and angry, and he'd taken it out on her. She'd been kind, she'd been there, and he'd been thoughtless, selfish, distant even in the moment. He knew something had shifted between them - that the distance wasn't just physical anymore. He'd felt it, too. It hadn't felt like them. It had felt like two lonely people trying to fill a space that only one of them could truly fill. Because somewhere in the dark, his heart had been elsewhere. With someone else. And that wasn't fair to her. It wasn't fair to any of them.

He swung his legs over the edge of the bed and stood up, wincing at the dull throb behind his eyes. He didn't know how to apologize for something this big. He didn't know how to look at her when she looked at him with hope in her eyes and he felt nothing but guilt and confusion in return.

When he walked into the living room, the heaviness in his chest softened just a little. Ethan was sitting on the rug, his small legs tucked beneath him, completely absorbed in the colorful cartoon playing on the television. He looked up the moment he heard Harry's footsteps, his big eyes widening, a shy but bright smile spreading across his face.

"Good morning, Daddy Harry!"

It was sweet - careful, like he was still testing the words, still getting used to saying them. Harry's heart swelled, and he offered a small, genuine smile in return. This little boy was his. That was real. That mattered more than any ghost from the past.

"Ethan, breakfast is ready!" Kathalina called softly from the kitchen.

Ethan scrambled up, his socked feet padding quickly across the floor. He reached for Harry's hand, his small fingers curling around one of his larger ones - tentative but sure.

"Daddy Harry, I helped Mommy make chocolate pancakes!" he said proudly, tugging him gently toward the kitchen. "They have extra chocolate chips. Come on - let's eat before they get cold!"

Harry followed him in, watching Kathalina place a stack of golden pancakes on the table. She moved quietly, efficiently, but he noticed the way she kept her eyes downcast, the way she turned away quickly after setting the plate down. She was giving him space, keeping her distance, and he hated that he was the reason for it.

For a quiet, painful moment, as he watched his son laughing and reaching for the syrup, as he watched the woman who loved him pouring juice into glasses she'd set out for them, he wished more than anything that his heart would let him be happy here. He wished he could look at Kathalina and see her - truly see her - the way she deserved. He wished that when he woke up in the middle of the night, it was her face he was reaching for, not a memory that had already faded.

But wishes didn't rewrite the past. And they couldn't force a heart to heal faster than it was ready to.
