Chapter 37
Chapter 37:
The Truth in the Shadows
Kathalina stepped through the front door, and the silence of the apartment wrapped around her like something unfamiliar. It felt quiet - too quiet - as if the walls themselves were holding their breath. It had been weeks since she'd truly called this place home. Most nights had been spent at the hospital or simply somewhere else, and the distance had given her a clarity that was both gentle and painful.
She had come today only to pack some clothes for Ethan. Harry had asked if they could stay with him for a while - at first, she had hesitated, politely declining. But then he had asked something softer, something that tugged at her heart: if he could take Ethan for just one week, to get to know his own son. How could she say no? He was Ethan's father. He had missed five years already. She wouldn't be the one to make him miss a single day more.
She opened the closet and reached for Ethan's little shirts, her movements slow and thoughtful. That was when she heard it - the quiet sound of footsteps behind her.
"Kath? Can we talk?"
She turned around, her hand still resting on a hanger. Lucas stood in the doorway, his shoulders slumped, his eyes heavy and dark with something she couldn't quite place.
"Of course," she said softly, though a small knot of uneasiness formed in her stomach. She set the shirt aside and followed him to the dining area.
She loved Lucas. She really did. He had been her shelter in the storm, the one who brought her tea when she couldn't sleep, who held her hand when the world felt too heavy, who loved Ethan as if he were his own blood. But love wasn't always enough. And she had known for a while now that her heart had never quite healed from the boy who had always lived there.
They sat across from each other at the small wooden table - meant for four, but feeling vast and empty between just the two of them. The afternoon light filtered softly through the curtains, but it didn't seem to reach him.
"I knew this conversation was coming," Lucas said finally, his voice low and rough. "I just... I didn't think it would happen quite so soon."
Kathalina tilted her head. "What do you mean? Lucas, what are you talking about?"
He stared down at his cup of tea, his fingers tracing the rim nervously. "I know what Olivia did. I've known for a long time."
The words hung in the air, and Kathalina felt her breath catch. Her fingers tightened around her own cup until her knuckles turned pale.
"You knew?" Her voice was barely a whisper. "You knew all this time? And you never told me?"
"I couldn't," he said, lifting his head, desperation flashing in his eyes. "Kath, I was terrified. If I told you the truth... I knew what would happen. You'd go back to him. I'd lose you. And I couldn't - I wouldn't - let that happen. I love you too much to just... let you walk away from me."
Her blood turned hot, rushing to her face in a wave of shock and anger.
"So you thought lying was better?" She stood up slowly, her heart pounding painfully against her ribs. "You thought keeping me in the dark was kindness? Lucas, look at me. Did the two of you make some kind of deal? Does she get Harry, and in exchange... you get me? Is that what I was? A bargain?"
Lucas remained silent, and that silence was louder than any answer he could have given.
"I mourned him," she said, her voice cracking as tears spilled hot and fast down her cheeks. "I thought he chose to leave me. I thought he had built a new life and forgotten all about ours. I cried myself to sleep for years, Lucas. And you sat beside me. You held me. And you knew."
She swept her arm across the table in a moment of blinding pain. Her glass shattered loudly against the wall, shards glinting on the floor like broken stars. Neither of them moved.
"I need to pack," she whispered, turning away before she could say something she might regret - though she wasn't sure anything could hurt more than what she had just learned.
She walked into the bedroom, her hands trembling as she pulled her suitcase from the top shelf of the closet. Every drawer, every photograph, every piece of furniture suddenly felt like it belonged to a stranger's life. How could she have lived here, slept here, planned a future here... when the foundation of it all had been built on silence and lies?
She folded her clothes mechanically, her mind racing. He knew. All this time.
Then suddenly, she felt it - strong arms wrapping firmly around her waist, pulling her back against a chest that heaved with uneven breaths.
"Please," Lucas choked out, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "Don't go. I'm sorry. I was selfish, but I did it because I love you. We can fix this. We can start over. Just... please don't leave me."
Kathalina closed her eyes, letting the tears come freely now. She gently, carefully, unwound his arms from around her. She turned to face him, and the pain in his eyes mirrored her own.
"I know you loved me in your own way," she said softly, her voice trembling but steady. "But I can't build a marriage on what you kept from me. I need someone who tells me the truth even when it's hard. Even when it might cost them me. You didn't do that, Lucas. And I can't stay."
She lifted her left hand. The engagement ring caught the light, shining with a cruel, beautiful innocence. Slowly, she slid it off her finger. It felt lighter than she expected. She reached for his hand, opened his fingers, and placed the ring in his palm. Then she closed his fingers over it, as if handing back a piece of a puzzle that had never been hers to give.
"It's better this way," she said, though her heart felt like it was splitting in two. "You deserve someone who can choose you completely. And I deserve someone who never keeps secrets from me."
She turned back to her suitcase, zipping it shut with a final click. She took one last look around the room - the bed where they had slept, the window seat where they had talked, the dreams that had never truly been real. Then she lifted the bag and walked out.
She didn't look back. She couldn't. Some doors, once closed, needed to stay that way so you could finally walk through the right one.
