Chapter 32
Chapter 32:
Letting Go Was Never Easy
"Thank you," Olivia said softly, before closing the car door gently behind her. She stood there for a moment, watching Andrei's car fade into the distance, the red taillights growing smaller until they disappeared around the bend. When she finally turned around, her heart gave a quiet, painful ache.
There it stood - their home. Simple, elegant, warm - the house she and Harry had chosen together, planned together, dreamed about building a family within. It was everything they had ever wanted. Yet as she walked up the steps, the heaviness in her chest told her those dreams would remain exactly that - only dreams.
She unlocked the door and stepped inside. The familiar scent of his favorite cologne still lingered faintly in the hallway, and it felt like a gentle but heartbreaking embrace. The house was quiet - too quiet - until the sound of footsteps echoed from upstairs, coming from their master bedroom. Her pulse quickened, and she hurried up the stairs, her breath catching in her throat.
Harry was there, standing by the wardrobe, carefully placing his clothes into his large suitcase. The sight of it - of him preparing to leave - made her stomach twist painfully.
"You're really going?" she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
He didn't stop what he was doing, his hands moving steadily. "Yes. I need someplace quiet to think. Somewhere that doesn't hold... so many conflicting memories."
"Harry, this is your home too. You don't have to go anywhere," she said, stepping closer and reaching out to touch his arm gently.
He pulled away at once, the movement sharp and automatic.
"Don't touch me, Olivia," he said, his voice low and strained. "Please. I can't stay here. Not when every wall reminds me that I've been living a life that wasn't mine."
He paused then, turning to face her, and the anger in his eyes softened into something that hurt even more - deep, weary sadness.
"I was happy here. With you. That's what makes this so hard. I loved you, truly. But now that I know the foundation of it all was built on deception... I don't know what's real anymore. I need space, Olivia. I need to breathe without feeling like I'm being watched or lied to."
"But you said you loved me!" Tears spilled freely now, hot and fast down her cheeks. "And I love you. We can fix this. We can build something honest, something real. Please... just don't walk away from us."
He shook his head slowly, his gaze never leaving hers. The fight left her then, and she sank down onto her knees before him, her pride vanishing completely.
"No, Olivia - don't kneel to me," he said, reaching out as if to help her stand, then pulling his hand back uncertainly. "Please don't make this harder than it already is."
"Just give me a chance," she begged, looking up at him through blurred vision. "I'll earn your trust back. I'll be patient. We're meant to be together - I truly believe that. We can heal from this."
"There's nothing left to heal the way things were," he said gently but firmly. "We hurt each other in different ways, and staying in this house together... it will only keep reopening the wounds. We need to walk apart for a while. So I can find peace with the truth, and so you can learn to forgive yourself."
He stepped closer, placing his hands lightly on her shoulders.
"You deserve someone who knows every part of you and still chooses you. Someone who loves you just as you are, without secrets standing between you. You were a wonderful wife to me - kind, patient, caring. I'll always treasure those years. But I can't pretend the betrayal doesn't sit here, heavy and sharp, between us. I can't look at you without remembering what was kept from me. Not yet. Maybe not ever the way it was before."
He let his hands fall to his sides.
"You have to let me go. Not just for me - for yourself too. Maybe someday, when we've both found our own way, we can meet again as friends who've made peace with the past. But right now... I have to go. I have a son I've never even held. I've missed four years of his life, and I won't miss another day. And I need to be there for Kathalina - to stand by her the way I should have all along."
He leaned down then, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to her forehead - gentle, aching, and final.
"Take care of yourself, Olivia. Be kind to yourself. And find happiness that belongs only to you."
With that, he lifted his suitcase, took one last look at her, and walked out the door. She stayed exactly where she was - on her knees, motionless - listening until she heard the car start outside, then fade away into the distance. The silence that followed felt heavier than anything she had ever known. She wrapped her arms around herself, and the sobs finally broke through - shaking her whole body, echoing through the empty house that no longer felt like home.
