Chapter 1
Chapter 1:
Sunrise & Daydreams
Morning spilled across the sprawling Lim Estate like liquid gold-soft, luminous, and warm-turning the vast emerald lawns into a sea of shimmering green and gilding the edges of the grand white stone mansion. The air was crisp and sweet, carrying the delicate perfume of gardenias climbing the stone walls, freshly cut grass, and the rich buttery scent of baking blueberry muffins drifting up from the kitchen far below. But nowhere did the new day feel more magical than inside Olivia's private suite-a sanctuary of soft lavender, vintage elegance, and quiet beauty, as refined and charming as the girl who called it her own.
The room was a vision of timeless grace, exactly as shown. The walls were lined with delicate vertical paneling, painted in the palest dusty lilac that seemed to glow in the early sunlight. Above the hand‑carved headboard hung a small framed painting of lavender blooms-soft purple petals and slender green stems-complementing the room's gentle, romantic palette. Suspended from the high ceiling was an exquisite crystal chandelier; its twisted metal frame and hundreds of faceted prisms caught the sunrise, scattering tiny dancing rainbows across the floor, furniture, and the mountain of plush linens heaped upon the bed. The bed itself was an antique masterpiece: an ornate, hand‑carved frame in weathered ivory, its details worn just enough to feel warm and lived‑in. It was dressed in layers of cloud‑soft luxury: crisp white linen sheets, delicate lace‑trimmed blankets, and a fluffy lavender comforter. Propped against the headboard were stacks of pillows-quilted in matching violet, embroidered with roses and wildflowers, and smooth satin cushions that caught the light like polished pearls. Beside the bed stood a dainty white nightstand with brass handles, holding a linen‑shaded lamp, a porcelain vase brimming with fresh purple lilacs, and small precious trinkets: a silver hairbrush, pearl‑tipped pins, and a framed childhood photo of Olivia and Kathryn, arms slung tight around each other.
Kathryn Suarez moved quietly across the room, bare feet sinking into the thick cream rug covering polished oak floorboards. She crossed to the tall floor‑length windows draped with sheer ivory voile and rich violet fabric, then pulled them wide open. Sunlight flooded instantly, turning the chandelier into a shower of light and filling every corner with warmth.
"Liv! Livie, rise and shine!" she called softly-warm and teasing, careful not to startle her sleeping best friend.
From beneath the lavender comforter and lace pillows came a muffled, sleepy groan-half protest, half whine. "Kath... go 'way... too bright... too early..." Olivia's voice was thick with sleep, slow and tangled, as though she still drifted in sweet dreams.
Kathryn turned to look at her and smiled fondly. Olivia Lim was nothing short of adorable half‑asleep. She'd burrowed so deep under the covers only a messy tumble of glossy, jet‑black hair peeked out-strands sticking up playfully. One slender hand emerged blindly, swiping to shield her face from sunlight. Her long lashes fanned against her smooth, porcelain‑toned cheeks, and her pink lips curved into a tiny pout. She had the delicate, refined features she was known for: soft jawline, high graceful cheekbones, and those striking, luminous dark brown eyes-rich and warm like polished mahogany, even heavy with sleep.
"Come on, sleepyhead," Kathryn laughed quietly, leaning against the intricately carved footboard. "The sun's been waiting for ages. And today isn't just any Tuesday-this is our very first day at university! We can't be late and make a terrible first impression, right?"
At once, the sleepy pout vanished. Olivia pushed the comforter down and sat up, her eyes flying wide open-those deep, expressive dark brown eyes sparkling awake, shining with pure excitement that chased away every trace of drowsiness.
"What time is it?" she asked quickly, voice still raspy as she ran her fingers through her tangled black waves, trying-and failing-to smooth them.
"It's already seven o'clock," Kathryn answered, glancing at her delicate silver wristwatch etched with tiny roses. She smoothed her soft floral sundress-pale pink and white daisies brushing her knees. "Why? Did you forget your alarm?"
Before Kathryn finished, Olivia gasped and scrambled out of bed-bare feet hitting the rug with a soft thud. She grabbed a fluffy white towel and ivory silk robe, then darted toward the en‑suite bathroom, her sleek dark hair flying like a silken ribbon behind her.
"Oh my gosh-I'm late! How could I sleep this long?" she fretted, hurrying to the marble vanity lined with glass jars of cream, lavender ribbons, and crystal perfume bottles.
Kathryn shook her head, laughing as she leaned against the doorframe. "Calm down-you still have a whole hour to shower, dress, and fix your hair perfectly. We don't leave until eight."
Olivia peeked around the doorframe-foam from toothbrush on her lip-and shook her head frantically, her deep brown eyes shining with that familiar dreamy, determined glint. "No, Kath-you don't understand! I have to look absolutely flawless today. Because..." She wiggled her eyebrows playfully, grinning bright, "...my future husband is in my very first lecture!"
Kathryn burst out laughing. She and Olivia had been inseparable since toddlerhood-sharing every secret, adventure, and crush-but this was the first time Olivia spoke of anyone with such fierce, serious longing.
"Oh really?" Kathryn teased, crossing her arms. "Who's this lucky man? Don't tell me it's Luke Petersburg again?"
Olivia immediately let out a dramatic, exaggerated choke, rolling her glossy deep dark brown eyes so far back it seemed they might stick that way. She spat out her toothpaste, rinsed thoroughly, and leaned against the marble counter with pure theatrical disgust.
"Eww! No way-absolutely not!" she cried, waving her hands as if Kathryn suggested something terrible. "Luke Petersburg? He's nothing but a loud, cocky show‑off! He's chased me since tenth grade-flowers, notes in my locker, even trying to carry my books! It will never work."
Kathryn smiled, sitting on the bed's edge and brushing her fingers over lace‑edged pillows. "Why not? Everyone says he's handsome, kind, from a good family-straight A's, polite, would treat you like a princess."
"Exactly!" Olivia shot back, stepping out in her silk robe, cheeks pink and glowing from warm water. Her long jet‑black hair cascaded over her shoulders, framing her soft features perfectly. She flopped beside Kathryn, bouncing slightly. "But I don't want 'good' or 'safe.' I want someone who makes my heart race like it'll jump out! Someone I've dreamed of since childhood! And if you really don't know-his name is Gavin Lorenzo."
Kathryn's breath caught at the familiar name. She cut in playfully, rolling her eyes. "The heir to Lorenzo Group of Companies. Everyone knows them-luxury hotels, real estate, fashion lines, half the province. But I've never seen him; he was always away at boarding school or business trips. Not that I care-rich heirs are usually too busy to be real people."
Olivia gasped and squeezed Kathryn's hands tight, her whole face glowing with starry devotion-those deep brown eyes softening like warm honey. "Oh, but he is real! And nothing like you think! Tall, broad‑shouldered, dark hair falling perfectly over his forehead, eyes so deep and intense you could get lost in them. So handsome it almost hurts-but gentle, polite, a true gentleman. I've loved him since we were seven, when our families had summer parties here. I watched him walk across the lawn in a crisp white suit and hand me a pink rose-and I whispered: Someday I'll be Mrs. Olivia Lorenzo."
She sighed dreamily, leaning back against lavender pillows, watching rainbows dance across the ceiling. "Today's the start of everything I've ever wanted."
Kathryn watched her-young, hopeful, innocent-and smiled softly. "Well then, I hope it's exactly like your dreams. But hurry and get ready." She stood, smoothing her dress. "Your mom asked: what muffin flavor? Nanny baked fresh this morning."
Olivia sat up quickly, shifting from dreamy to practical. "Blueberry! Big fluffy ones with sugar crumble, please! And fresh garden salad-light vinaigrette. I need to look perfect when I walk past Gavin's desk!"
Kathryn laughed, nodding. "Got it. I'll bring them up soon."
"Promise!" Olivia called, already hurrying to her wardrobe.
Kathryn stepped into the sunlit hallway, closing the door gently behind her. The house smelled of vanilla and fresh bread-but her mind lingered on Olivia's radiant face and the name Gavin Lorenzo.
Standing there in the soft morning light, Kathryn could not have known-none of them could-that this first university day would change everything. That the boy Olivia dreamed of would tie their lives together... and tear them apart. That years later, amid fairy lights and roses, she would return-their dearest intruder, the ghost who never truly left.
But for now, in this lavender room full of sunlight and sweet daydreams, they were just two best friends-young, hopeful, and certain the future would be as beautiful as the morning unfolding around them.
