Letter #27

Friday, February 19th, 1796

My Dearest, Theodosia,

Thank you so much for my birthday gift! I did not expect you to send me anything, but when I opened that letter and discovered the painting, I was beyond ecstatic. I shall keep the painting with me always, much like you do with my poem. To look at the painting every day will continue to bring a smile to face for as long as I am alive, though I do wish it was face to face rather than with a painting.

Speaking of, I am travelling to Albany next month to see Mother and I was wondering it would be possible to see your face when I do. We have been apart for so long and to finally talk to you in person would bring a ray of sunshine into my life. I am more than certain we can find a way to meet without either of our families finding out.

Please let me know if this is possible.

Love always,

Philip Hamilton.

My Dearest, Philip,

I am extremely glad that you enjoyed your gift, I doubt it matches up to your poem, but to know you are carrying it with you is enough to know that it was worth it. Father almost found out about the painting a few days before I sent the letter as the bill for the artist arrived. Luckily, I managed to keep it hidden whilst I paid for it, it was a very close call, but all of it for you, Philip.

As for your request to meet in Albany, I shall be happy to meet you when the opportunity arises. Just send me a letter with a meeting place and a time and I shall try my hardest to sneak away from Father long enough to see you. Perhaps a small bend in the truth shall allow me the chance to see you in person for the first time in months.

See you in Albany.

Love Always,

Theodosia Burr.
