Dear Jenny,
I fucked up! Last night, I told Anna she was lovely and now things are awkward. Even more awkward than usual. Conversation is non-existent and thanks to today's itinerary, we're heading to the Trevi fountain to make a wish. Perhaps I'll ask to go back in time and undo what I said. I'd do anything to return to the filthy looks and snide comments. Anything beats torturous silence.
"Do you have a coin?" she asks, breathless from the humidity.
It's a hot day. Perhaps a little too hot for a strenuous walk through town.
"Sure."
Her fingers lightly brush mine and the contact makes me quickly pull back. As a result, the coin falls to the floor, much to my annoyance.
What the fuck is happening to me, Jenny?
I bend over to retrieve it and—at the same time—Anna does too. We end up butting heads and in doing so, I get a nose-full of coconut shampoo.
"Sorry."
She grabs the coin and pushes her way through the endless crowd, ignoring our interaction. I follow her find myself at the edge of the fountain, ready to make my wish. The water is surprisingly clear. I don't know what I was expecting exactly, but clean water wasn't it.
"Ready?" I ask.
She nods and closes her eyes, the morning sun reflecting beautifully off of her face. I watch her for a moment, appreciating this new found vulnerability. Anna has always been outspoken and loud. Today, I'm seeing a different side to her for the first time. It's refreshing. Nice. It's... lovely.
Fuck!
She throws her coin in the water and it lands with a splash. The surrounding water ripples in the aftermath before returning to its normal state.
"Your turn," she says, facing me.
It's busy where we are and her arm lightly bumps into mine.
"Okay."
I close my eyes and briefly wonder if she's now watching at me like I was watching her just moments ago.
What should I wish for, Jenny?
I haven't given this part much thought. In all honesty, I've been so wrapped up in Anna all morning, I haven't given anything much thought.
Anna.
I attempt to summon an appropriate wish and find the only one worming its way though is probably the least appropriate.
I don't know what's happening to me, Jenny?
Rational thought slips away and all that remain is my wish. My fucking wish.
I wish for Anna to be happy.
I throw my coin in the fountain and turn away, heading back towards the hotel.
I can't do this, Jenny. I just can't!
"Harry?"
Anna's concerned voice follows me through the crowd until eventually she catches up to me. She lightly grasps my hand in an attempt to halt my actions and I respond by yanking it away.
I'm an ass.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
She frowns. "Your lying."
"No, I'm not. Nothing is wrong."
"Harry—just tell me what it is."
"Fine! You wanna know what's wrong?" I shout, gaining the attention of nearby tourists. "I'm suck in this beautiful country with you when I should be with be Jenny!"
Her face drops in an instant.
"We aren't friends, Anna. We never will be!"
Tears gather in her eyes and I feel like the biggest jerk. But I don't correct my wrongdoings. I don't apologise. How can I when it's better this way?
It's better she doesn't know.
"Harry—"
I turn my back on her and walk away, needing some space. Some clarity.
She can't know.
I'm sorry, Jenny!
No one can know.
I think I have feelings for Anna.
Lots of love,
Harry

OH—things are heating up in Rome!
Where will the pair end up next, I wonder?
