Thirteen
For the average person back in the settlement, they'd be sleeping oh so soundly all through the nights within their warm beds right in their shoreline cabins. For Maeve Buckley, things weren't quite so simple.
The tent was warm—-in its own way, at least. To Maeve, it was at least better than sleeping outside on the ground; especially being this far through the mountainous landscape.
Still, there was only a blanket within. While most in the settlements had quite a few to themselves, there was just a singular wolf pelt blanket.
Maeve wasn't used to the way the pelt felt against her skin—--it was an odd feeling to her, as she was used to wool. But, Maeve wouldn't complain; she was in a tent, with a blanket, away from the harsh elements of nature brewing outside.
Despite the tent and blanket though, not even those could save off the shivering due to the cold climate outside.
Maeve found herself shaking under the pelt as she laid there, on the ground, just a bit. Luckily, her teeth barely chattered. Most noticeably, was when she exhaled—--it was like vapor tearing into the air.
While the cold was a very unpleasant thought to the young witch, she found it a brilliant topic to get her mind off of Sokanon.
Maeve was so unsure of what she felt for Sokanon. At first, Maeve didn't trust her. …But clearly Sokanon felt the opposite, given the fact she was so willing to tell her she ‘was a vampire’. And now, in each moment that Maeve let her mind entertain the mere thought of the other woman, her heart would do somersaults in her chest. Her heart acted like a ship tossed about on the sea, by stormy waves.
Maeve listened to the wind's howls outside as she laid, sleepless.
“It's really coming down out there,” she murmured to herself, after laying there in silence for so long, letting the wind fill the silence after her words, yet again.
A few moments later, curiosity got the best of Maeve. Maeve sat up, opening the tent flap just a bit to see just how hard the wind was blowing.
The wind speeds weren't the first thing that Maeve noticed though—-it was the rapid snowfall.
Snow covered the ground, leaving almost no trace of the stone, grass, and dirt beneath.
Maeve let her gaze cruise until she saw where Sokanon sat at the campfire’s grave. “Sokanon!” She hissed, somewhat quiet; this was most currently drowned out by the wind’s screeches. A little louder, Maeve began, “Sokanon—-” And when that didn't work, she shouted, “Sokanon—-!”
The other woman turned rather quickly at that, seemingly a little startled. Her golden gaze met Maeve's teal. “Maeve.”
“Get in here. It's too cold to be out here,” Maeve immediately demanded.
Sokanon gave her an amused look. “Are you sure you really want to be commanding me right now?”
Maeve groaned. “Just do it. I don't want to wake up tomorrow to see one half of my help in finding Aelod frozen to death.”
Sokanon hesitated before making her way over to the tent that Maeve peaked out of. She cracked a grin at the comment and retorted, “Actually… My heart already did.”
Maeve rolled her eyes as she kept the tent flap open and Sokanon entered. “Yeah, yeah. Undead. Vampire. I know.” She closed the flap when Sokanon sat down.
“We um… we should get some sleep,” Sokanon replied when silence forged itself within the tent. “It'll be a big day for us tomorrow… Tracking him and whatnot.”
“We should,” Maeve agreed, laying down before Sokanon did the same. Maeve put the pelt over herself before she beckoned the hesitant Sokanon over. “Come on. Get closer. We can share the wolf pelt. I don't bite… not like you.”
Sokanon rolled her eyes at the joke before she moved in closer, under the blanket with Maeve.
Silence fell upon them and Maeve's breath hitched as she realized just how close Sokanon was… Her face just inches away from Maeve’s.
