06. Strange Frequencies

The truck was filled with many screens, one had a map of the entire city and others you were able to see through the traffic cameras. The people in charge of it were not newbies at purging, at all Allison knew that for sure.

"This is some high-tech shit. Yo, somebody spent a lot of money trying to do some heavy-duty Purging. Look at this. They're accessing the city's traffic cams. Looking for targets, I guess." Cali explained as she looked at the screens.

"Traffic cams are controlled by the government. How did they get into these? I mean, who are these people?" Liz said.

"Maybe you just answered your own question." Cali replied. "They must have hacked into them, it's technically not that hard I've done it before." Allison said as she typed somethings into a computer screen.

"And I just did it right now." She continued. Allison moved out of the way so they could see what she had done and there it was, they could now see through 4 more traffic cameras in the city.

"Hacking property of the government, I wonder if I should be impressed or worried for your safety." Cali said nonchalant.

"I agree." Leo's boomed through the truck before he want back to looking at one of the computer screens.

"Look at this. Seventh Street. Is that your building?" Leo asked Eva.

"Yeah, but why is it all red?" She asked.

"You're being targeted for something, along with all these other buildings. Here, here. All over the city. All around the projects." Leo said as he trailed his finger throughout the screen pointing to the buildings that were lit up in red.

"Maybe you were right, Cali." Eva said looking at her daughter.

"Look, I'm telling you, this is the New Founding Fathers. The government..."

"The truck is fucked." Shane said before Cali could finish her sentence.

"No good?" Leo asked.

"No, the engine's all blown out or something." Shane replied.

"Hey, look at this." Cali called out. Allison stood next to her and saw a few feet away on a brick wall the NFFA flag crossed out, a big 'X' was over it with red spray paint. Carmelo, she thought.

"That's Carmelo's mark, Mom. I told Papa he was the real deal. His group took these fuckers out." Cali explained to her mother.

"Everybody got a weapon?" Leo asked. Before Allison could nod another huge truck made it's way towards them making everyone's heads shoot up.

"Hey, grab this. Take the weapon. Go. Go! Go!" Leo exclaimed. "Oh, shit, there's another one. Looks like an army." Shane said. Barely realizing the giant truck headed towards them.

The group jogged quietly through the dark alley, Allison was surprised that her arrows weren't making the 'clink' sound as she ran. Which was a good thing because the most important key to staying alive on The Purge was to be silent and alert.

Everyone stopped at the end of the alley, a bonfire was lit up yards away from the alley, drunk men could be heard breaking things and shouting.

The group was pressed up against the brick wall, quiet not to make any noise. But the silence was soon disturbed. A rat squeaked as it tried to go up Liz's leg she shrieked, kicking a can in the process. Everyone looked at her in disbelief, waiting to be executed or just simply waiting for their fate they stood paralyzed with fear and anxiety.

Leo peered over the brick wall slowly, carefully not to get noticed by the purgers. He saw a fire lit up in the middle of the street man surrounded it, while a tall man beat the body of a dead man. Leo looked up towards their destination. The subway. That's where they needed to go. Unnoticed that is.

Footsteps approached the group slowly but loudly, "Take this." Leo said handing his daughter his rifle. She grabbed it and held it in her hands.

"Shh." Leo told the group as he put a finger up to his lips.

A man finally turned the corner, before he could say anything Leo spun him around and put him in a headlock. The tall, muscular, tattooed man struggled before he finally passed out. Leo set him on the ground gently as Allison gave him back his rifle.

"Come on." Leo whispered. Allison was surprised by her father's ability to knock out the man. Sure he had taught her how to defend herself, but never in a million years did Allison think that her father could knock out a tall and much more muscular man.

The group followed him down the stairs into the empty Subway station. They jumped down from the platform and started walking on the Subway tracks with the small pieces of gravel on them. Allison walked next to her father who had a flashlight in his hand illuminating the dark Subway tunnel.

"Good job sweetie." Leo told his daughter. Allison looked up at him confusingly.

"You were great out there on the street when that wire wrapped around Shane's ankle, you did a good job helping me out and especially when you took out those two guys." Leo said.

"Thanks dad, but really I just did what you taught me to do. Defend and protect myself and the people that I love and care about." She said smiling.

Another smile formed on Leo's face the only person who could cause a smile to form on that tough, and brave face of Leo's was Allison.

"Come here kiddo." Leo said sticking his arm out. Allison walked over to him as he wrapped his arm around his daughter's shoulders she wrapped her arm around him, she put her head on his shoulder and they continued walking.

"I'm not a kid I'm 18 years old dad." Allison huffed.

"You might be but you'll always be my little girl." Leo said.

"That is so cliche and corny." Allison replied. Leo rolled his eyes and Allison laughed as she punched his side lightly.

"But I love it, don't worry old man." Leo smiled once again as they all walked through the dark tunnel. Footsteps approached both of them before the voice finally spoke up.

"Hey. Why did you stop at our building? Why did you help us?" Cali asked.

"Didn't we establish a no-talking rule?" Leo asked also. He wanted to talk to his daughter more but Cali wasn't letting him with her ridiculous questions.

"People are getting killed all over the city. Why did you stop for us?" Cali asked once again ignoring Leo's comment.

"I saw you. You were putting up a hell of a fight. You reminded me of someone." Leo said.

"Who?" She asked. Cali looked at the ground and Leo looked at his daughter for a second, only both of them knew who he was talking about.

//

"I need you to get better and I need you to fight his baby, you're only 17 you'll soon be 18 you've got so much life ahead of you. Whether you feel it or not you are putting up a hell of a fight because you have not given up, I can see you trying to wake up. You move your fingers, you try to open your eyes and that gives me hope that sooner or later you're going to wake up." Leo said speaking to unconscious Allison while holding her hand.

She laid peacefully on her hospital bed, tubes and needles were connected to her. The only sound you could hear was the constant beeping of the machine each time her heart beat and the sound of her breathing. It had been six months, six months of being in a coma. In those six months they had buried Nicholas, it had been hard on the family.

First loosing their youngest child, their son and now they had to face the sad possibility and reality that their daughter was also not going to to make it. The doctor had already told Leo and Janice that if they wanted they could take their daughter off of her life support.

Janice couldn't bare the thought of doing it so she waited sadly and fearfully outside of Allison's hospital room as Leo currently stood next to the life support machine his hand trembled as he reached for the switch.

This was it, if he pulled the switch his daughter would be dead in minutes. He didn't want to see her suffering but he also didn't want his daughter to die, this dilemma had haunted him for months. Salty warm tears escaped out of Leo's brown eyes. His hand was placed over the machine he put his thumb on the switch, he slowly put it down.

But suddenly he put the switch back up and lifted it back into it's original position. Leo slid down onto the bed and cried. He couldn't bring himself to do it, he just couldn't and he didn't, he didn't want to take his daughter off of the only thing that was keeping her alive.

He was just going to have to take his chances, he knew that Allison would wake up. A small bit of hope lingered inside of him. His little girl was going to wake up and when she did he would be there.

Allison's ears twitched, as she picked up the sounds around her she could hear beeping, and sobs. She struggled as she tried to open her eyes. They were heavy but she finally put all of her strength into her hands and eyes. She struggled again before her brown eyes shot open. She looked over to her side, her father was crying onto the sheets.

"Dad." She said hoarsely. Leo shot, up looking at his beautiful daughter who was looking at him wide awake. "Sweetheart oh my god this is a miracle!" Leo said covering his mouth with his hand."Nurse can we get a nurse!" He said shouting into the hospital hallway. "Janice she's awake our baby's awake." He told his wife before running to his daughter's side and Janice followed.

Allison had beat the odds of surviving, she fell under that five percent chance of survival which made her parents both very proud. From that moment on Leo knew that at no matter what cost he would protect Allison with his life. If it meant taking a bullet for her he would do it, he would rather see her live than him. There was no way he was going to loose his daughter, not again.
