Induction

"Come on now. Don't be so hard to get," a charming voice chided. "I'm just a tiny bit hungry. Why won't you help me out a little?" A high pitched scream sounded as glistening, white fangs were bared. "Just one sip."

The man turned and pinned the woman to the wall and pointed his fangs towards her neck. The woman managed to slip away from his grip.

"Ooh. A fiesty one." His eyes narrowed. "My favorite." He grabbed onto her wrists and tried to push her up against the wall once again, and once again she slipped away. The exchange continued on like this for a while longer, the man gaining leverage, then allowing the woman to escape.

The cycle was broken when a small vibration shook the man's pocket. He grabbed onto her wrists once more, threw her to the ground and pinned her down with his foot.

He pulled the phone out of his pocket and answered it. "Hello?"

The woman screamed for help, hoping the person on the other end of the line would notice. The man laughed and looked down at her.

"He couldn't care less about you, honey." The man smiled and pressed the phone back up to his ear.

"Where are you?!" the voice at the other end screeched.

"I was trying to get a snack when you interrupted me."

"We don't have time for that right now, James. Seamus finally caught that ghost. Get back here as fast as you can!" the voice coming from the phone demanded.

"Alright, Jordan. I'll finish this drink and come back," James said, referring to human blood as if it was some sort of average alcoholic beverage.

"You better be quick! I swear if you're not back-" James cut him off by hanging up on him.

"Sorry to cut this short, but I have somewhere to be." James roughly pulled the woman off of the floor and shoved her against the wall. "Thanks for all the fun." He closed in, fangs aimed towards her jugular. When they finally pierced her skin, she screamed and passed out in fright. James just held her up as he sucked the blood from her body. He hummed in pleasure, savoring the sweetly metallic taste as he swallowed mouthful upon mouthful of the crimson liquid.

As he finally pulled his fangs from her neck, he slid his tongue over the two hollows in that he had left her skin, licking up the last drops of blood left in the woman's body. When he let her go, she fell pale, cold, and lifeless to the floor with a thunk. He wiped the corner of his lips with his thumb and licked away the blood that he had rubbed off.

He stepped towards the door and pulled his sweatshirt hood over his head, hiding his face and effectively blocking out the sun. He dashed out of the house with superhuman speed as he headed back to the mansion he called home.

When he got to the edge of the forest, a large shadow covered him.

"Oh, hey Kev. You were out too?" James asked, looking up at his winged friend.

Kevin nodded. "Just out stretching the wings." He took a second to strike a pose and flex his feathery appendages.

James laughed at the other's antics. "You're pretty proud of your feathers, huh?"

Kevin swooped down and landed next to James. "Who wouldn't be proud if they had the biggest, grandest, strongest wings covered in the softest, shiniest, most well-groomed feathers?" He reached a wing out and tickled James' nose with a wingtip.

James batted the black feathers away from his face and smiled. "You're so cocky."

"Like you should talk, Mr. Fancy Fangs," Kevin retorted.

"It's not my fault that I was voted best fangs by the committee last year!" James said, baring his shiny, white fangs in a seductive smile. He was increasingly proud of them and constantly fussed over them, keeping them as clean and sharp as possible.

Kevin laughed at him and went back to showing off of his wings. James bared his fangs in response, showing off as well. They went on like this, showing off and laughing at the other, all the way back to the mansion.

When they opened the large front doors, they were greeted with the familiar sights and sounds of the mansion. The corridors were dark and rang with the notes from Nick's violin. They went on their way through the dim corridors and dark rooms, slowly nearing Jordan's chamber.

When they reached the final hallway, the darkest in the building, they were greeted by a relieved voice.

"Oh, finally! You're here."

"Sorry, Steven. We lost track of time in the woods on our way," Kevin apologized.

"Don't tell me that," Steven said, "Save it for Jordan. I bet he's pissed." He snapped his fingers and sparks flew from his fingertips, lighting a flame that danced in the palm of his hand. "Now come on!"

Kevin and James followed Steven down the hallway, now lit by the small flame that still flickered in his hand. At the end of the hallway there was an ornately designed door, its surface covered in carvings of various monstrosities and the knockers molded into somewhat deformed, yet threatening, cats. Kevin grabbed hold of one and banged it against the door. It was answered quickly and they were ushered inside. The notes flowing from Nick's violin grew louder, drifting freely into their ears once the obstruction of the door had lost its relevance.

"You guys took long enough," a man perched on a large throne said, signalling Nick to cut the music. Nick complied and removed his bow from the strings, bowing his head in reverence to the man who had given the command.

"Now. What we've been waiting to start," the man on the throne began, the torchlight dancing across his face and somewhat eccentric outfit. "Seamus. Bring him in here."

The reaper entered the room, pulling Aleks along, but to most of the men in the room it looked like he was pulling along thin air. Kevin, however, saw Aleks and immediately recognized his face. He tried to divert his eyes and hoped he would go unnoticed.

"What the fuck is this?" a thick British accent asked.

"Dex, calm down," the man in the throne demanded. "He has a ghost." Dex rolled his eyes in response. "Put him here," the man demanded, pointing to a spot directly in from of his throne, "And make him kneel," he added through gritted teeth. Seamus followed orders and brought Aleks in front of the throne and pushed him to his knees.

"Hmm. It seems like you have some sort of... Sympathy for the ghost. How odd would that be?" the man spoke down at Seamus from his throne.

Seamus' eyes grew redder in nervousness as he tugged at the collar of his cloak. "N-no, Jordan. You must be mistaken. I have no feelings of any sort towards this man."

"I hope that is the case," Jordan said, relaxing back into his throne. He tipped his top hat over his eyes and glared down at Aleks. "Finally. We've got you. Do you know how much trouble you've caused us? How many hours we've spent chasing after your sorry behind? After the trouble you've caused, I almost want to do something different than what I had planned for you." His glare grew more venomous. "But... I think you will be an integral part of this group. Someone to haunt and create more mystery surrounding us. Someone to finally strike hearts full of fear."

Aleks laughed from his position on the floor. "You can't even scare people anymore? How pathetic!"

"Silence!" Jordan demanded, but Aleks didn't listen and kept laughing. "Daniel, silence him!" Dan followed orders, stepping over to Aleks and clamping a hand over his mouth.

"For your own sssake, I'd be sssilent," Dan hissed, his forked tongue flicking about on every 's' sound he spoke. He removed his hand from Aleks' mouth and stepped back to his spot at Jordan's right hand.

"It's not that we can't scare people, it's just that the media has stolen our... Zing. Twilight stole the power behind vampires and werewolves, Supernatural stole the mystery of angels, Avatar stole the threat of those who can control elements, and tween fiction books stole the fear from everyone else." Jordan sighed. "Even though ghosts have been demoted as well, their invisibility continues to give them an edge. We need you to spook the populace before we ravage the cities."

"Like I'd want to work for someone like you," Aleks spat back. Jordan snapped his fingers and Dan pressed his foot to Aleks' back, pushing him down.

"If you value your untortured exissstence, I sssuggessst you lisssten well and hold your tongue." Dan's pupils shrank as he focused in on Aleks' form. Though he couldn't necessarily see ghosts, his enhanced vision and sensory organs allowed him a view of the basic form of Aleks' body.

"Yeah, like I'm going to listen to you, Snake Boy. Even less desirable is following Mr. Fancy Tux's orders," Aleks growled, pushing up against Dan's foot. Dan only pushed back harder.

"Aleksandr," Jordan snapped, "Quiet." He stood up and began to walk circles around Aleks, his jewel-topped cane tapping loudly near his face. "From now on, you'll listen to me, whether you like it or not. You'll do as I say and do it well." He stopped in front of Aleks' face and lifted his chin with the end of his cane. "Understand?"

Aleks glared up at Jordan. Then he realised something. "But you can't see me, can you? How would you know if I were to disobey you?" A devious smirk crossed his face.

"I trust my men enough to inform me of any misbehavior, but, if there's anything suspicious happening, I will just have to enter a state in which I can see you. And we don't want that, now do we?" Aleks stayed quiet, assuming Jordan was bluffing. "Plus, I have a good enough idea of where you are and what you're doing, so don't think I won't know what you've done." He tapped the top of Aleks' head with the end of his cane. He stepped back up to his throne and sat down. He tipped the brim of his hat down once again, covering one of his red-tinged eyes.

"You will be allowed your general safety and pleasure in exchange for following any order I give you. Do we have a deal?" A devious smirk crossed Jordan's face.

Seamus and Kevin had both been silently begging Aleks to just give up and submit to Jordan's orders. If he were to deny this offer, they planned to step in and try to talk some sense into him. Luckily, this wasn't necessary.

"Fine," Aleks said, defeated. He hung his head in shame.

"Wonderful," Jordan said with a smirk. "Everyone may go back to what they were doing. Just don't stray too far this time," he said, glaring at James and Kevin. He flicked his wrist, sending the company off to their own devices.

As they left, Steven, Dex, and James talked amongst themselves, discussing what had just happened. They were all confused, for they couldn't see one of the members of the argument. Nick, who wasn't able to see Aleks either, simply didn't care enough to ask and headed off towards his favorite spot in the mansion.

Both Seamus and Kevin were quick to grab Aleks and rush out of Jordan's chamber.

"What are you thinking?! You're gonna get yourself killed! Again!" Seamus yelled at Aleks, eyes deep crimson in anger and concern.

"I'm sorry I don't want to follow the orders of some odd, overly eccentric man," Aleks said, rolling his eyes and crossing his arms.

"I'm still just disappointed you let yourself get caught, Aleks," Kevin said, sighing. "I let you go after so much, and you go and get yourself caught!" Kevin crossed his arms as well.

"You should've just caught me then, Kevin. We'd all be happier," Aleks spat angrily.

"You know what, I'm gonna go. I don't need your sass right now," Kevin growled as he turned on his heel.

"Kevin, I think there's things we need to-" Seamus was interrupted by the swoosh of Kevin's wings pushing him off of the ground as he left grumpily. "Sort out," he spoke the last words of the sentence quietly, his voice still trailing off.

Kevin flew away quickly, grumbling to himself. He soon found himself blindly heading to his nest, situated in the cave under the mansion.

Upon entrance into the cave, he was greeted by the beautiful music flowing from the strings of Nick's violin. Nick spent most of his time in this cave after he discovered its wondrous acoustics. Kevin, whose nest had been in a small cavern in the ceiling long before they had discovered Nick and his hypnotics, happily accepted the other into his realm, perpetually enamored by the beautiful songs. He smiled and sighed happily as the music filled his ears. He waved to Nick who smiled in response and took wing once again, flying up to the crevice near the ceiling that contained his nest.

He landed in the well tended pile of sticks and stretched his wings. He then laid down and wrapped his wings around his body. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, and was soon lulled into a peaceful sleep by the melodies floating from Nick's violin and into his cavern.
