The sun shone in the bright blue sky, casting light on the golden castle behind me. I looked around, my hair blowing slightly in the cold breeze. I sighed, resting my head on my hooves. "Where are they...?" I asked myself quietly, not wanting to be heard by anypony. A tall tree shaded me from the sun, it was an oak tree, I think. It had been there for a while, or so my mother said. I liked coming up here. It was nice, and quiet. Not many ponies knew about this place, and that was why it was nice, nopony to interrupt you, nopony to annoy you. It was perfect.
My name, is Darkheart. I'm eight years old, and it's my birthday.
My mother, and father. Are the rulers of this kingdom, they always have been- at least that's what nightwing tells me, my mother always says; 'you shouldn't listen to him, he's only telling little fillys tales'
I never knew how long nightwing had worked at the palace, apparently a long time, his mother abandoned him because of his fangs and long flowing hair. That's the story I heard.
Nightwing is half batpony, half Pegasi. He never talks about his past, and works as a guard at the castle.
He may be years older than me, but, he is my best- only friend.
If it wasn't already obvious, I'm an alicorn. My mother, the queen, father, King.
I'm a black unicorn, with a long dark grey mane, mother tells me to get it cut. But I don't listen, nightwing tells me it looks nice long. I have emerald green eyes, which according to my father, shine like stars.
I closed my eyes, the cool breeze blowing my mane and tail.
I sighed,
"why do they always do this?.... On my birthday?"
I heard hoof steps behind me, I didn't bother moving, I already knew who I was.
"You ok kid?"
Nightwings voice came from behind me. I didn't reply, he sighed, walking up to me.
"They late again?" He said sitting down next to me,
"Yeah... They always do this" I replied sitting up, I looked over at him, he smiled. A warm smile, one that could brighten up the worst of days.
"They wanted to be here, I know they did. They're just busy" he reassured me.
"Yeah.... They always are" I said laying back down on the emerald green grass beneath me. He lay down next to me,
"I'm sure they'll come.... You want me to stay with you until they do?" He said looking at me, with kind, caring eyes.
I nodded, "yeah..." He smiled, pulling me closer with a wing.
I smiled slightly, leaning my head on his shoulder, closing my eyes.
Night was like a brother to me- no, he was like a dad.
