After dinner everyone settled down to rest when a commotion brought their attention to Danny and Sam. "Danny, just go to bed." She was saying as they walked past, Danny looking a little woozy.
"No, I can't... I can't go to sleep. I have to get ready for this test." Danny was mumbling.
"There is no test!" Sam cried.
"If I fail this test then I'm going to fail school and drop out. I cannot go to sleep."
"Danny you have a fever." She continued trying to turn Danny around but the boy was determined to wander around.
"My doctor says I'm fine." He said.
"Fine who's your doctor?"
"Tucker's my doctor. He's the most beautiful nurse in the world." Danny said swaying dangerously.
"That's it. Come on." Sam grabbed his arm and Danny stumbled after her trying to pull off his shirt.
"Oh my god, it's getting hot in here." He said and she stopped him.
"That's your fever."
"Danny I typed your symptoms into my PDA and it says you have network connectivity problems." Tucker called.
"Thanks Doctor." Danny replied.
"You don't have internet idiot." Sam yelled.
"Oh yeah." By this point some where laughing. Dash however got up and helped Sam move Danny into bed.
"Is he going to be okay?" Dash asked.
"Yeah, he heals quick. He'll be okay by tomorrow." She sighed.
"All this is pretty crazy. I never knew Fenton led such a life." Dash breathed. He then lowered his head in shame. "I never tried."
"I'd like to say he hates you for it." Sam said coldly brushing some hair from Danny's face. "But he seems incapable of actually hating anyone." Dash left her to watch over him and Paulina confronted him.
"Okay what's with you?" She snapped. "Being so nice to the freak trio."
"They're the ones who are gonna get us home." Dash snapped back. "What's with you being a complete bitch all the time?"
"Ooooh burn!" Someone shouted.
"They're hiding something." She said in a dangerously low voice.
"Of course they are. And who are we to demand they tell it? After the way we treated them, I wouldn't even bother trying to save us if the tables were flipped." Dash yelled. A blue hand dropped onto his shoulder and he stopped dead and looked up at Pandora who was glaring at Paulina.
"You are causing trouble again." She said coldly. Paulina squeaked in fear and stepped back. "I understand you don't like it here but it's a safe place. Keep up this horrid attitude and not even my Danny can stop me from casting you out into the open. Leave Danny, his friends, his family and this lad here alone." Paulina shivered and scrambled away leaving Dash in the grip of the scariest ghost Dash had ever met. She smiled at him and knelt down.
"I heard from Sam you used to bully my Danny." She said softly. He bit his lip and nodded. "But you stopped?" He nodded again. "Not that I am not grateful, but why?"
He knew lying to this woman wouldn't work so he sighed and said lowly so the other students wouldn't hear. "I was jealous of him. That's why I picked on him. He had true friends. The people I hung with would stab me in the back in an instant. I wanted what he had but didn't know how to get it so I blamed him..." and then Dash explained what changed.
Dash was in the boy's bathroom crying. Big bully Dash crying? Well the truth was he did that a lot. Ever since his mother left his father became distant. They barely ever talked and his 'friends' never cared for what he felt. So he'd hide from them. And let his tears run free when no one else was around. But this time someone was around. He hadn't heard the door open but he recognised the shoes. Danny Fenton. He tried to slow the hiccuping and sobbing but it was too late the damage had been done.
"You alright in there?" Danny sounded concerned which only made it hurt more.
"Go away. You wouldn't understand." Dash snapped hoping he wouldn't recognise his voice. He watched as the door moved slightly, Fenton was leaning against it.
"Try me. I'm surprisingly good at listening when I have the time." He said. Dash's lips were moving before he'd even processed he was spilling his heart out to the guy he'd beaten up not even an hour ago.
"I... My mother ran away from my dad. She didn't even say goodbye. And my dad won't talk to me, like it's my fault. My 'friends' won't help me or comfort me. Their too cool for that. I have no one. What do you understand about that?"
"I get bullied." Danny said. There was silence before he continued. "There is no one I can turn to for help. My parents would make it worse, my sister would try to apply therapeutic remedies. My friends would try to beat him up and teachers don't do anything because he is a sports star. I have no one to turn to when I'm injured in case it sparks a situation that is worse. On the bright side I've become quite good at patching myself up. See." He stuck a bandaged arm under the door and then quickly took it back out. "Now I'm not saying it fixes anything. Talking about it. But it helps right? You're not crying."
Dash put his hands up to his face. It was true. His tears had stopped. "Why do you even care?" He said his voice cracked from crying.
"I guess it could be called... My dying obsession. I don't want anyone to suffer. It's like, whenever I see someone who is upset, in danger or simply needs someone to lean on, I have to give it all I have to try and make things better. My friends call it a Hero Complex." Danny suddenly laughed. "Strange isn't it. Someone as pitiful as myself, so scrawny and picked on. Wanting to help people in ways I shouldn't be able to. Guess the term freak isn't so far off the mark."
Dash's throat tightened. He'd been picking on this kid for years. How had Dash not noticed how nice Danny was? Dying Obsession? Isn't that a ghost thing? Dash shook his head free of thoughts and stared at the door. "Hey... thanks man." He said. "It does help."
"Great. Well. If you ever need someone to talk to seek me out. I've gotta run now but think about that." Danny's feet headed towards the door and then paused. "It'll get easier. I promise. Just hang in there, Dash." And then he left.
Dash's blood went cold. Danny knew. Danny knew it was him! And he'd helped him all the same. Dash grabbed some toilet paper and dried his face, stepping out to looking the mirror at himself. "You're the scum of the earth Baxter." He said to himself. "Picking on an angel like that." From that day forward he vowed not to pick on Danny again.
"And that's why I stopped. I couldn't hit him knowing how sweet a kid he was." Dash admitted. "And that wasn't the last time he comforted me. It seemed like every time I went off to the bathroom to cry he was there. And we'd just talk."
"Sounds like you like my Danny a lot." Pandora said. Dash's face lit up like Christmas lights and she chuckled. "Whether you pursue these feelings or not isn't up to me. And I can't say for sure they'll be returned. But you need to be forward with him should the time ever come to say it." With that Pandora left him to his thought.
Was it true? He admired Danny, more now than ever. He was kind, brave, strong, cute-. Dash shook his head to clear it. 'No, not cute.' He thought. But as the image of Danny smiling, his blue eyes sparkling, sailed through his mind he sighed in defeat. He was a creep. He had a crush on Danny Fenton.
"Why am I so messed up." Dash growled.
