Peeta

The all too familiar sounds of my family's usual routine wakes me up bright and early. They travel up into the room I once called my own, now full of things from my family and my old belongings. I have been here since Madge kicked me out of our house, leaving me no choice but to return to the place I have always hated, despite calling it home. Living with Madge had been no bed of roses but at least it was better than waking up to mum's rolling pin in some part of my body if I'd failed to wake up before she did.

I get up and go downstairs. Before I know it, Ava grabs my arm and pushes me to another room.

"You are a freaking moron!"She whispers sharply as she locks the room's - which I've just noticed is Dad's office - door. She then releases my arm and sits on Dad's chair "How could you get a fight with her?! She's the freaking Mayor's daughter, for gosh sake!"

"She was being a nasty brat" I defended myself. She just rolls her eyes.

"What did you do?" She asks as if she hadn't listened to what I've just said.

"What?"

"What. Did. You. Do?" She repeats.

"I asked about children again, and she... you know. Then she kicked me out. Now I'm here. That's it." I explain.

She looks me up and down with a glare. "Something else happened though, didn't it?" She asks.

I scoff. "No, nothing. Come on, we'll be late." I say.

"Not that brat, Peeta. Someone else. You're.... Different.. Infatuated... Oh My God.. Did you go out with someone else? After fighting with the Mayor's daughter?! And married!? Peeta, who is it?" She says.

"It wasn't... Ava... it's none of your business, what I may or may not have done. Drop it, okay? Nothing happened this weekend," I replied and sighed. "Nothing but a mess..."

Ava gave my hand a squeeze. "Well, whatever the heck you did, forget them. She's going to come around here again, you know. Tell her that your caveman selfishness got the best of you. Beg for her forgiveness—and don't talk about kids, Peeta. Seriously, that girl is probably going to give Mom and Dad beautiful children, but turn out as God awful as her. You've spent a lot of your life on hold because of what happened with Mom. Stop hiding and be a man. Stand up to her!"

I smiled at my sister's mock-aggravation. "You really hate her, don't you?"

"I really don't—," Ava answered as her eyes lowered to the ground. "I want it to be someone else, but I doubt our family will let you leave her now. And not as the Mayor's daughter..."

"Me, too," I agreed and we left the room.

"Come on, we should get to work.." She says with a sigh.

We both went silent as we strolled arm in arm. Katniss came into my mind, as we were walking.

I missed her—it had been only a month since we had left the cabin but my mind and heart felt empty without her. I realized that I had forgotten that there was a time when I had not woken up with her pressed close to my heart and not in my dreams.

And, I hated it.

Ava inhaled sharply as we made it at the Bakery. "A fresh start... Just.. try to fix this. If she does come, you know. K?"

I put an arm around her and we went inside. I tried not to hold my breath that Madge wouldn't stop by. I braced myself whenever the door opened to hear some yelling from Madge or the Mayor. The stress keeps me from doing much, and my Mom realizes my lack of focus. She sends me to the back portion and cuts the dough. Ava comes back and nods for me to open the door. I give her a confused look.

"Someone wants you. Someone who isn't Madge. I sent her around, cause Mom came in." She whispers.

Katniss...

"Thanks. Keep her out of my hair, and let me know if Madge shows up." I say.

She nods, then goes back up front. I rush to the door and open it. Katniss is indeed there. She looks like she's been crying a lot. I see a bruise on her arm.

"Katniss.... What... What the heck happened? Are you okay? What's wrong?" I ask.

"A lot.... And... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry." She says, and hugs me then cries.

"Is this about...?" I ask.

She holds me tighter. She cries harder.

"Kat.... it's okay. I don't regret a thing, and neither should you, okay? No one is going to find out..." I say.

"They do... and something is going to happen.." She says.

"What do you mean?" I ask and let her go.

"Gale... h-he found out...He's going to give me away!"

I stand there in shock trying to understand what she just said.

"How?!We've been careful!" I say

Taking a breath, she took my hand and placed it against her abdomen.

Underneath my palm, I suddenly felt the roundness of her stomach and that familiar feeling of butterflies filled my own stomach. And, the realization hit me all at once—all this time, that feeling was the baby calling to me.

"I'm going to be a Dad," I said in a choked whisper.

"Yes. I'm....pregnant.." Katniss nodded in agreement, her smile soft yet she looked absolutely terrified. "Are you happy?"

I nod and lean in to kiss her. She smiles through the kiss making me smile too. Then all of sudden the realization of what we've done hits me.

"Oh my goodness what have we done, Katniss?" I whisper. "We gotta run away, Katniss. If what you say, about Gale giving you away is true, then we can't stay here"

Before Katniss can say anything else, I hear someone else's voice.

"PEETA JAMES MELLARK! WHO THE HELL IS THAT?!!" Madge screams from behind me.

I pull away fast and turn around, hiding Katniss behind me.

"M-Madge... what.. Are you doing here? I thought I was dead to you." I say.

"You're as good as dead now!" She yells.

Madge then slaps me with full force. Massaging the area she just hit me, I turn around and say to Katniss "Go. I'll meet you there"

It doesn't take long before Katniss is running out of the bakery. Madge tries to go after her, but I hold her off.

"Let me go! I'll get that whore!" She yells again and I have to use all of my strength not to hit her.

"Don't you freaking call her a whore!" I say, fuming, and let her go but block the door from her with myself.

"Who the heck is she?!? Did you leave me for her?" She yells.

"I never left you for anyone, Madge. But I sure as heck will!" I say.

"Well obviously you did. I've never seen you kiss anyone else like that. Or have someone fall into your arms and cry their pain, but me, for that matter." She snaps. "Who is she? How the heck do you even know her anyways?"

"She's a friend." I say.

Madge scoffs. "A friend. Sure, she is. Bet she's a "Friend with Benefits" isn't she? You waited for me to drop you, then you go crawling to the next girl who walks into the Bakery, is that right, Peeta?" She says.

"No, it isn't! You don't even know her! And you never will!! And you don't even know me, Madge! You dumped me, so stay away from me and my family and her!" I say.

"Well, who is she then? Tell me how you met this girl that now comes running into your arms and kisses you? Seems to me you wanted her the whole time, didn't you Peeta? You just waited to leave then go run off with some. Some Seam slut I bet! Isn't she?! Probably been doing this to me ever since we were Reaped! Had an affair with some Seam whore trash, right!?!" She yells.

"She isn't any of those things! She's the love of my life and has my heart and my life! I owe it to her! Not yours! And our life will be better, and finally, I can be happy for once! Since she'll give me what I want and will soon, as a matter of fact! Cause she loves me, and I love her. And she isn't a Seam slut! At least she doesn't toy with everyone and make love some kind of game and isn't as selfish and cold as you are, Madge! Katniss Everdeen loves me and I will always love her, so leave me and her and our child out of it and leave us the heck alone!" I scream at her.

The anger that I let out instantly turns into regret. I just told her everything. And her father can do things. Powerful things.

"You... SLEPT WITH HER?!! AND NOW SHE" S PREGNANT! Oh, just wait until my father hears about this! In fact, I'll tell him now. Better go kiss your slut goodbye, she's' not going to when she is turned into an Avox!" She yells.

What have I done to us...?

Madge rushes out the door before I can say anything more. Ava comes running into the back, looking mad and confused.

"I told you to fix this! Not make it worse, you frick up!!" She says.

"I did the moment I left the house that day. Now we're as good as dead. I'm sorry, Ava." I say, quietly.

"We already were to Mom and Dad, why not the rest of the District?" She says with a sympathetic smile. "So...outta that, I heard I'm an aunt soon, yeah?"

"Crap! Katniss! Madge is going to find her! Then all of us!"

"Not unless you get found." She says.

"What does that mean? How are we going to stop the Mayor of 12 and the Peacekeepers?" I ask.

"You don't, I do. I am the Amazing Ava, after all, and have a head full of mischief and plans." She says with a wryly smile.

"That won't work, Ava. This is serious. We're dead. We can kiss out life goodbye and get ready for a new hell." I say.

"Oh, Peeta. And now you see why I never got in trouble or caught all those years ago. Just leave it to me, okay? But you better get to her before someone else does. Go, now. Before they get to her first." She says.

Without another minute to lose, I hurry to save the only person who I love more than my sister. The new person who I will love even more.

Katniss

I run like Peeta told me to do. I know I won't be able to go back to Gale. I don't want to face him. I can't. I have to go, like Peeta said. So I will. We will.. We all will. No matter the consequences. I love Peeta. I will not stop until I am his, and he is mine. The only way is to leave, so I will go.

I try to be as cautious as I can to not be spotted by anyone, everyone would suspect there is something wrong if they see a frantic married woman running for her life to an illegal part of the country.

I really want to go back and meet Prim at least once before I run away to the cabin, but I don't because I am sure that Madge will send peacekeepers after us, her father being the Mayor and all.

Peeta, please come fast. I need you right now, more than ever.

As if on cue, I see a figure running out of the shadows towards me.

I am sure that it's Peeta because I know that no one but him could have found me running where I am. I slow down my pace, to make it easier for him to catch up with me but I don't dare stop. After a minute or so, he reaches up right beside me, both of us panting heavily.

"Hey, I'm glad you came." I manage to breathe out.

" 'Course I did. Wouldn't leave you, would I?" He says back.

"Not for the world," I say with a hint of a smile.

The nearer we get to the fence, the faster my heart beats and the more anxious I get. When we do finally reach it, we both give each other a look, I see in his eyes a mixture of fear, excitement, worry and anxiety, and I am sure he sees the same in mine.

"You go first, I'll follow." He pants.

"I'm surprised that they haven't charged the fence yet, they must've at least guessed that we would make a run for it," I say.

"Well, whatever the reason is, we should be grateful. Hurry, I don't think we have much time left," He says, gesturing to the small opening in the fence.

I lay on my belly and somehow manage to crawl under it, while I'm on it, I hear Peeta shouting, "Katniss, they're here! The peacekeepers! They are coming, Katniss!"

I start to panic, and I hear more yelling in the background, it sounds like one peacekeeper commanding something to another. I reach the other side and just as I'm about to get up and help Peeta, I hear the faint humming coming from the fence.

"Oh no! What do we do now?" I worriedly ask Peeta, who looks determined despite the terrible circumstances.

"You go. Go by yourself. Go to the cabin. And don't turn back, no matter what. I'll try to escape." And when I don't move, he adds, "Go now, Katniss! I will find you later! I promise." He tells me, and before I have time to protest he runs in the opposite direction of the peacekeepers, away from them and from me.

And then I run again, I run as fast as I can and climb up a high tree from where I have a view of what's going on, on the other side.

And then what I see breaks my heart. Oh no, no, no, Peeta, no. Shit, shit!

I don't have a very clear view of what's happening but I could never mistake the blond hair for anything, there are peacekeepers holding back Peeta from coming towards the fence and Peeta looks absolutely defeated.

My heart is racing and so is my mind, considering the worst possibilities of course. Who knows what they will do to him? They might even kill him...

No, I can't think about these things, I have to stay positive, especially now that I have to not only take care of myself but even my child.

But it's true, they might, and there is no point in giving myself false hope. None.

I sigh and carefully climb back down and continue walking deeper into the woods. After a while, when I'm sure no one can see me, I sit down to rest, still breathing heavily from my long walk. I lean my head back against the tree trunk, no longer having the strength to keep going.

Now is when I finally allow myself to truly contemplate and analyze my current situation. I'm terrified and exhausted, but I haven't yet reached my destination. The cabin isn't very far away from where I stand, so I decide to get up and continue.

After a few more minutes of walking, I reach the cabin. Thankfully, the cabin is situated in such a way that you wouldn't even realise that it's there until you know that it is. It couldn't even be spotted from a hovercraft.

I reach out and open the door to the small but useful lodging. I go sit on the chair just beside the coffee table with my head in my hands, thinking...
