Chapter 5 | Second Thoughts
Walking into the dance building, you found that the room was booming from the constant, excited chatter. Everyone seemed hyped for the upcoming competition, and you couldn't help but wonder how long it would take for people to tone down a bit.
"Hey, (y/n)." Spencer drove you here so he was with you as you both walked into the club. "What's all this talk about The Dove or whatever her name is."
"You haven't heard?"
"Course not! I only heard about her because the guys in my dance group said something about it. That's all they were texting about during sixth period." He muttered as you both approached the check in stand. Shannon was there, arguing with Kate.
"I want you to bring her here, Shannon."
"Oh yeah! Tell me, the club designer, to ask The Dove to come here." Shannon rolled her eyes and plopped a piece of gum into her mouth.
"She needs to know her place. I can't have some anonymous girl take my spotlight! She- no...everyone has to know who the real ballet prodigy is!" Kate growled at Shannon. "Do you understand what I can do to you if don't listen to me?"
"Something about making my life terrible." Shannon said, looking up at Kate, obviously not phased by her threats. "You have nothing on me, Kate. I know better than to leave any careless remarks or evidence laying around for someone like you." Shannon paused, now looking at Kate, straight in the eyes. "You can't touch me. You know that."
Kate's nostrils were flaring from anger as she glared at Shannon in defeat. With a toss of her glossy hair, she turned around and pushed herself passed you, grumbling angrily to herself. Geez...Calm down.
Looking back at Shannon, you saw that she sighed in relief, now turning to you and Spencer as she did so.
"Gosh. Someone needs to regulate that girl." She chuckled and looked down at her clip board. "Ehh, (y/n)...and Spencer, you two are now checked in."
"Thanks." Spencer muttered and looked down at the unorganized papers in his hand. "Do you know where Lucy and the others are at? I'm in their group and apparently, they're gonna kick my ass if I'm any later than I already am."
"Yeah! Eh, you're in room G7. They're all having some sort of mini-party in there." Shannon let out a smirk as Spencer turned to leave. "Tell them that if they don't start their work in ten minutes or so, I'll break their group apart." She laughed with a smile, causing Spencer to rush off, almost breaking into a sprint. With a sigh, she then turned to you with a chuckle. Her eyes wandered into the small crowd, pointing out Kate within the group.
"Kate is too much. She's been nagging at me about The Dove since I got here."
"Terrifying." You frowned and looked down upon the surface of her desk, looking for your assigned room.
"Hey." Shannon chuckled again and snatched the papers from your sight. "I've noticed that you've been a little dead lately."
"Dead?" You smiled out of concern, now looking up at her in question. "What do you mean?"
"Well, look at you. Not even asking me about Noah anymore. What's gotten into you?"
"Nothing, nothing. I just really want to start choreographing my duo with Sans. Got a problem with that?"
"Yeah, actually." She stuffed her papers into a nearby travel bin and scooped it up into her arms. "Normally you're so excited to see Noah, but...you seem to be losing interest. You know you can't keep the relationship going if you don't like him anymore, (y/n)."
"I still like him, Shan-"
"I don't have a problem if you don't like him anymore. It's keeping the relationship going even if you lose interest. I don't want you ruining Noah. He's a sweet dude." She shrugged and started to snatched up her sketch pad, stuffing it into her travel bin. Until now, you never really thought about it, but you couldn't help but feel some doubt. Am I losing interest? That's ridiculous!
"Don't make me second guess myself, Shannon!" You scolded her, causing her to give you a look of slight disappointment. She then sighed and began to fish around her bin for something.
"Sans is in room E2." She said with a frown and handed you a small envelope. "That's your clip from the last competition, by the way."
You took the slip of paper, looking at it with an odd look.
"Didn't I already get my clip?"
"Not the one you won..." She then looked at you carefully, almost waiting for a reaction. "...with Noah."
You felt a light pang of guilt zip into your system, but you held a straight face. At least, you thought you did. Shannon didn't show any signs of picking up anything, so you figured that you held your composure well. To break the atmosphere, Shannon broke into a smile and pushed you playfully.
"Go get to Sans. He needs his partner if he's gonna get any work done." She laughed and retreated to the hallway to her designated room, causing relief to rush into your system. Sighing, you started towards the room, now thinking about what Shannon had said. Am I really losing interest? I can't actually....
Doubt really started to get the best of you, and it only got worse when you walk in on Sans and Sage dancing in the middle of the room. He had a hand around her waist and the other behind her head, easily stooping her down so he could snag a kiss.
"Eh...Hey?" You lightly tossed your bag onto a nearby couch, causing Sage to immediately straighten up, blushing in the process.
"S-sorry! We- eh, uh..."
"We weren't exactly sure when you were coming and Sage decided to stop by. Sorry you had to see that." Sans chuckled nervously, patting Sage on the back while doing so. You glanced at Sage, raising an eyebrow as you did so.
"Don't you have a group to be with?"
"We don't have all of our people together yet and...yeah." She mumbled out, her blue eyes still glistening in embarrassment.
"How many people are you guys waiting for?"
"Ehm...Well I'm in a group of seven, so...three?" Sage didn't seem too sure of herself. You assumed it was due to her unfamiliarity with the club, let alone the competition.
"Do you know who?"
"Well, I believe Noah is coming a little late."
"Noah?" You felt your voice grow a little bitter. And he didn't tell me.
"Yeah...He was coming in with... what's her name... The one that hangs out with Kate. She's a brunette...uh.."
"Giselle?" Your voice grew into disgust as she nodded. Of course, he would be late. With her.
You shrugged and sighed. No wonder he was reluctant to tell me who he was dancing with.
"Giselle part of your team?"
"Mmhmm." Sage bit her lip, now fiddling a bit with her phone. It vibrated, signally that she had gotten a message. Quickly, her blue eyes turned to the phone, causing strands of her black hair to fall in front of her face. "Oh. Looks like everyone's here."
She started to gather her belongings together, stuffing them all into her bag. She then stood up and pecked Sans on the cheek.
"I'll see you soon." She murmured to him and smiled at you. "See you, (y/n). And I apologize again for having you witness what you saw."
You chuckled, feeling the questioning of your emotions towards Noah bubble up again. You forced a smile, brushing off the annoyance.
"It's fine. See you, Sage."
She beamed at you in relief and took off out of the room, leaving you with the skeleton. Turning to him, you could see that his grin was plastered on awe. Is he that awe-stricken of her? Why can't I be like that? Just...
You blinked off the inconvenience and sat yourself on the wooden floor.
"How long you two been together?" You asked Sans, causing his attention to snap towards you. He smiled down at you and sat down.
"Eh, not too long. Six months or so." Shrugging, he began to click a bone or two. "How about for you and Noah?"
You grinned back at him, stretching yourself out as you did so. "Roughly the same time as you."
"Nice." Sans smiled, obviously eyeing down something on your shirt. His facial expression changed from carefree to slightly confused as one of his fingers lightly poked your chest. "What's this thing?"
"Hm?" You turned down to look at the abnormality, causing his finger to flick you straight in the forehead. "Hey!"
You swatted at his hand, now laughing a bit. His face held onto a grin, looking victorious in his accomplishment.
"Sorry, couldn't help myself." He chuckled as you took a grasp of his hand out of playfulness, causing something to pop off.
"What the heck!?" You glanced at your own hand, finger two of his fingers in your grasp. "Oh shoot! I'm so sorry!"
"No worries." He laughed and snagged his fingers back, sticking them back into their assigned position. "Skeletal anatomy isn't quite like human anatomy. We could pop into pieces as we please."
"Oh?" You laughed and took a glance at his wrists. "So I could pull off your entire hand if you let me?"
"Only if you didn't want me to be handsy, if you know what I mean." He wiggled his non-existent eyebrows, causing you to lightly push him over.
The rest of the practice went of pleasantly, but little did you know...this very moment would be the start of what people call the 'Butterfly Effect'.
