Did you really love us but didn't know how to?
Did you burn down the house to excuse all the pain that you went through? / And is it better now that you're gone?

Your eyes snapped open when you felt the slightest bit of light tap against its lids, the bittersweet, familiar ceiling staring right back at you.

And your senses betrayed you—your mind bringing back the sound of warm giggles muffled in the pillows, soft touches up the length of your arm, the sweet taste of his silky skin between your teeth.

Turning your head, you looked through the window at the grey clouds that seemed annoyingly familiar too.

You threw the blanket off you before you slid to your feet. It was too tempting to continue to sink further into the bed, and you knew you'd be there all day if you didn't force yourself out of it.

As your legs carried you to the door, you passed the mirror. Freezing as you did so, Jungkook's clothes on you served as an instant slap to the face yet again.

It hurt that he still had these. That he still remembered. That they still smelt the same. Just like him. You couldn't help but wonder if he thought of you when he wore them. If he wore them because of you.

A frustrated sigh left your lips at the thought. You had no right to think that way. No reason to.

Your hand rose to the doorknob, twisting it slowly as the murmuring from the television filled your ears straight away. Jungkook was up?

When you entered the living room, you scanned the space, finding him lying in the middle of the couch, back flat against the cushions as he watched the ceiling.

A nostalgic smile pulled at your lips, and you couldn't help yourself. But it dropped almost immediately when something pulled at your heart.

"Good morning," you said softly as you dawdled around the furniture, falling next to him into the setti. His head jerked up, and you watched his eyebrows rise.

"Oh, hey," his words were rushed as he sat upright, "You're awake."

"I am," you sent him a half-hearted smile, "I'm surprised too."

Then, his gaze dropped from yours, and the moments passed in unbearable silence. Your mind still couldn't wrap itself around how you two ended up this way.

"Do you want anything to eat?" he interrupted the quiet, reaching for the remote and turning the volume down.

"No, that's fine, thank you. For some reason, I don't have much of an appetite right now."

"Okay," the silent nodding was back, and you had to hold back the groan hiding within your throat.

"Do you always wake up at..." your eyes flitted to the clock, "six in the morning?"

He shrugged, "Occupational hazard. Our shift times are so unpredictable."

"Right, right," you bobbed your head at the floor before deciding to direct your attention to the television. Maybe that would make your awkward interaction a bit more manageable.

"We're asking everyone to remain as calm as possible with everything that's been happening," you furrowed your eyebrows as the reporter's words rushed out of her, "We understand that it's been hard with all the uncertainty—a terrifying couple of hours. But we'd like to remind you all that our best scientists are trying to figure out what's been happening and what can be done. We are in the best hands."

Her voice trailed off as your eyes continued to grow in size, shooting from the screen to Jungkook beside you. His mind was immersed with something inside his phone, but when you looked to him, he lifted his stare.

As if he just knew you were going to turn to him.

"Do you know what she's talking about?"

He shrugged then, leaning back into the couch and resting an arm over the armrest, "A comet hit us."

And nothing could have prepared you for those words. Especially not with the way he said them as if he was telling you what he'd had for breakfast.

"Sorry, what?"

"In Poland or something. It was small, but people are going berserk. Understandably."

"It was small?" A comet? Were you hearing him correctly?

"Apparently no one knew it was heading in our direction. So everyone's afraid of the possible comets that may follow."

"But... but how is that possible?" You were beginning to question everything. Didn't they have the technology to sense these things thousands of years before they were to happen? There's no way this could just happen out of the blue.

"Yeah, it's really coming out of nowhere," he told her with his eyes still trained on the screen, and you had to resist the urge to reach over and shake him by the shoulders.

How was he so calm? Did he not just hear himself?

And, of course, mother nature took that moment to make herself known, a loud rumble ringing out through the sky. It made you jump a little. You couldn't blame yourself, with the thunder on top of the fright on top of the impending doom you were now expecting from comets hitting the Earth?

The hop got you slightly closer to Jungkook on the couch, and you felt him instinctively raise his arms to throw around you. But he dropped him just as fast.

"Are you being serious?" you finally managed to get out, and you twisted slightly. The television content now lost to both of you, the reporter's voice getting lost and the video playing now of the last football game fading into the blackness.

His eyes fell to yours, and you watched them slowly fill with concern, with anguish. But you knew it wasn't at all for himself. You knew Jungkook so much better than that. It was all on your behalf.

"I'm sure it's just a one-off scare," his voice softened, gorgeous doe eyes melting from charcoal to cement. "I'm sure nothing serious is going to follow."

You were both so close now, it made you wonder if you had unintentionally been inching toward him the entire time.

"How can you be so sure?" your voice came out in a mere croak, and you could see him wince.

He had to be thinking about how pathetic your life was. First, your apartment goes up in flames without warning, turning your entire life into ash. Forcing you to live in a less than ideal situation with someone who's carried your heart within him for years. And now you find out about this?

"We have to be," he whispered, too. And while it might not have been the most reassuring words in someone else's book, nothing could have been more comforting to you.

Especially not when he slowly reached out and brushed a small hair from in front of your eyes, feeling him freeze as he realised what he was doing, but hanging it behind your ear anyway.

"Jungkook—"

"I have to go back to work tomorrow," he cut you off while bouncing up and out of the couch, "It's a forty-eight-hour shift so I'll be gone for a while."

Why did it irk you that he didn't seem to want to address the immensely huge elephant in the room? Why did you hate that he kept jumping away from the idea of talking about you two?

"Is that even legal?" you finally asked when you zoned back in, "That's got to be against the law; having you guys take shifts for that long."

"We've been asked to work overtime a bit more than usual over the past few weeks. We're getting a lot more callouts for fires."

"Mhm," you nodded, not thinking much of his response.

"So," he cleared his throat quietly, "I was going to ask if you think you might need anything over the next two days. We can go grocery shopping."

You hadn't thought of that. Were you expecting to just live in on his life, take up his space, use up all the food in his pantry and not give anything in return?

"I don't mind doing that on my own tomorrow, Jungkook," you told him with a small smile, "You've already done so much for me."

"Are you sure? I don't have anything to do today; we can go."

"You should rest. Especially if you have to work for two whole days starting tomorrow."

You watched him open his mouth then to say something, but before he could, the doorbell rang.

His face scrunched up in confusion as he looked over at the entrance, and you concluded that he wasn't expecting anyone.

"My sweet Jungkook!" a deep, singsong voice diffused through the door, and the man to your right groaned as his head hit the back of the couch.

"Basketball," you heard him mutter under his breath, and you raised an eyebrow.

"Would you like me to—"

"No, it's fine, I'll get them to leave."
