The Grunch Monster is a cryptid endemic to the state of Louisiana. It has a few other delightful nicknames as well, such as ' The Vampire of Farborough Marigny' and ' The Demon of Downman Road'. What a delightful creature. The article that introduced me to this cryptid has this to say about it:
" It is most often said to be some sort of ape-like reptilian monstrosity with glowing eyes, a goat-like head, hoofed feet, formidable fangs, wicked claws, and a very bad attitude. The aggressive little monster is usually surrounded by a wretched stench, and has the apparent ability to instill great fear upon those who see it, and it also is known to unleash ear piercing howls or wails that invoke terror." How lovely. The origins of the creatures date back to the beginnings of New Orleans, back in the 1700s, which is neat. One folktale about how the Grunch came to be was that some inbred people inbred some more, and out popped a cute little baby Grunch.
Another-slightly more disturbing version of the Grunch's conception goes that the voodoo priestess slash midwife Mary Leveau castrated the entity known as ' The Devil Baby', and the detached testicles morphed into a male and female Grunch, which attacked the midwife before running away together
Yet another version of the story says that the Grunch formed as a protector of Satan worshippers, who had sold their souls to the devil.
A possible relative to the Grunch is the Chupacabra, which is another weird cryptid hailing from Mexico.
When I started researching this beast, I did not expect this amount of backstory.
