Six: Bitten
"Alright, that's enough for today." Bodil said, sheathing his dagger. Tyler sighed in relief as he fell onto a nearby bench, closing his eyes in exhaustion. "Take a water break." Bodil said. "We're going hunting." Tyler groaned loudly.
"How the hell does hunting help me?!" He snapped as he opened his eyes and pushed himself onto his knees, glaring at Bodil from the bench.
"You need to eat, don't you? You need protein." Bodil said, and Tyler only growled in reply. Bodil rolled his eyes and looked at him. "What, do you want to starve?"
I already am. Tyler thought, but just shook his head and stood. "Lets get this over with." He sighed.
"I want you to learn to use a crossbow." He said.
"Fine." Tyler said, not even really listening. Bodil tossed him a crossbow suddenly, Tyler gasping before he caught it clumsily as he stepped back in surprise.
"C'mon." Bodil said, leading him toward the nearby woods, Tyler following with a slight huff.
"What are we even hunting?" He asked.
"There's all manner of game in these woods." Bodil said. "Turkey, deer, boar, and more."
"I'm sure whatever we kill I'll be the one carrying it back." Tyler muttered venomously. Bodil sighed.
"I would build strength, but to keep you from complaining, I'll carry half." He said, and Tyler merely grunted in reply. Tyler grunted in reply. He had to admit, maybe he was being a bit of an jerk, but he didn't exactly like Bodil alright? There was something about the demigod that just pissed him off. For several minutes they walked along in silence, before Bodil suddenly stopped and raised a hand to stop Tyler as well, causing the SoulSucker to raise an eyebrow before he stopped himself. Bodil pointed ahead and Tyler followed his gaze. At first he didn't see anything, but then he noticed a goose walking alone through the woods, oblivious to the hunters nearby. He straightened up, before glancing down at the crossbow uncertainly. Usually he'd just stab the goose through, but you know, ever since Bodil the asshole made it impossible to use his scythe...
Bodil suddenly took his hands and raised his arms up so he was holding it correctly. He slowly helped him aim, still holding his hands as he did. Tyler felt his cheeks turn scarlet and his heart heat up, making him furrow his eyebrows slightly in confusion. "Ready...?" Bodil murmured into his ear, barely audible as he carefully let Tyler go. Tyler hesitated, then took a deep breath as he nodded. "Fire." Bodil whispered, and Tyler took a final deep breath before he fired, the arrow zipping through the air. A loud honk pierced the silence before the goose down, and it was down. Tyler watched it go, and he couldn't help but feel some pride well in his chest, making him slightly slightly. Bodil himself was grinning.
"Beginner's luck, but good shot."
"Thanks." Tyler smiled. Bodil started walking again, picking up the goose and heaving it onto his shoulder.
"We'll get one more and go back. C'mon." Tyler nodded and followed him, before he heard a nearby bush rustle. He blinked and looked over at it, furrowing his eyebrows. Bodil didn't notice as he kept walking away. Tyler stared at the bush, glancing at Bodil before he took a step toward the bush. It was probably just some rabbit or... The bush rustled again and Tyler saw bright golden eyes glowing through the leaves. He froze, and instantly felt terror rise in his chest. Usually he wasn't scared, but the atmosphere was off now. Whatever was behind that bush wasn't exactly friendly. Tyler glanced after Bodil, before looking back at the eyes. He didn't something he never thought he would, and that was call to Bodil for help.
"...Bodil?"
The second he spoke, there was a massive roar and a creature leaped from the bushes in a green blur of motion and onto Tyler, slamming him roughly down on his back in the grass. Tyler screamed loudly, trying to wiggle out from underneath the creature as Bodil whirled around. The god gasped and dropped everything, picking up the crossbow Tyler had dropped. He aimed and fired, but the creature wasn't killed. Tyler's scream rose in pitch as the creature's fangs ripped into his arm, his black blood staining the ground as Tyler squeezed his eyes shut. Bodil fired again and the beast reared its head, growling at him. Bodil glared at it straight in its shining eyes.
"Get out of my Sanctuary."
The beast snarled, but it faded from view and then disappeared into thin air.
"Did it bite you?!" Bodil demanded, running to Tyler and helping him sit up.
"... N-No..." Tyler whispered as he tugged his sleeve down to hide the teeth marks on his skin. Bodil was too busy glaring at where the creature had been to notice. "W... What was that...?" He whispered.
Bold glared after the creature. "Malumavis." He said. "Means evil bird in Latin. That thing is a tiger with wings, green so they blend in with the woods. They can go in any dimension they please, unless the creator of the dimension asks them to leave and says please."
"Y-You didn't say please..."
"I don't have to." Bodil said. "Me and Chariot, the Papatzin god, are both close enough to animals so that we don't have to say please."
"O-Oh..." Tyler gulped, glancing down at his arm before he looked at where the tiger had been. It was long gone now. He didn't really want to know what would happen if it bit you, but it wasn't like he didn't have to worry about it. It would heal... His arm throbbed for a few minutes, and as if to prove his point, he felt the skin heal over, and he sighed in relief. He was fine, there was no way he'd let Bodil know he was so stupid to let himself get bit. He already made himself look like a fool by screaming so loudly. Bodil started home.
"C'mon, the goose will be fine for tonight." He said, and Tyler sighed and bowed his head, following him.
"Sorry..."
"Don't apologize when it's not your fault. It immediately takes away your dominance."
Tyler looked up in surprise, then looked back down again. They traveled the rest of the way home in silence. Tyler felt himself get more tired and tired as they walked, confusing him. He was swaying slightly when they finally got to Bodil's house. Bodil didn't notice as he opened the door. "I'll get some stew on the stove." Tyler didn't answer, following Bodil into the house and going to the living room. He practically collapsed onto the couch. Bodil, used to Tyler ignoring him half the time, didn't think it was weird when he didn't respond. Instead he went to the kitchen and started cooking, humming. In the living room Tyler rubbed his face, staring up at the ceiling before he closed his eyes. He was starting to feel a bit queasy... Probably just hungry...
He must have ended up falling asleep, because he felt Bodil nudging him awake awhile later. He snorted awake groggily. "H... Huh...?"
Bodil smirked. "Wow, I must've worked you hard today." Tyler merely grunted, rubbing his eyes as he sat up. Bodil pushed a bowl of stew into his hands rather gently. "Eat, and then you can sleep." Tyler didn't bark a sarcastic comment, he didn't even say a word. He just started eating. He was groggy, and didn't even really tasted the stew. He knew it was good, though he wasn't quite focused on the flavor itself. Soon he was done and he set it on the table next to the couch, before he fell back and closed his eyes. He felt a blanket be pulled over him and a hand ruffle his hair before he fell fast asleep.
