Chapter 41

Illaria Point of View

The Almond house buzzed with excitement, the air filled with the aroma of baked goods and the sounds of laughter and chatter. Family members were running around, setting up for Zorion and Tiny's wedding, their joy palpable as they decorated the living room with flowers and streamers.

It was a whirlwind of activity that felt warm and chaotic, a stark contrast to the cool, calculated world I usually occupied.

I stood on the porch, watching as family members jostled for space inside. The lively atmosphere was infectious, yet I was preoccupied with thoughts of Echo.

I had to know what had happened during the chase, and Devon was the one who could give me the details.

"Devon!" I called out, my voice cutting through the noise. He turned; his expression serious but softening just a bit as he walked over.

"Can we talk about the chase?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.

"Sure," he replied, his tone steady and focused. "Let's find a quieter spot."

We stepped onto the back porch, where the sound of family faded into a distant murmur. It felt good to breathe in the fresh air, a welcome change from the bustling chaos inside.

"What happened?" I prompted, eager to hear his story.

Devon squared his shoulders, his gaze shifting toward the horizon as he began. "When we lost Echo, it was like losing a ghost. He's not just some average target; he knows how to vanish. Ural and I regrouped quickly. I decided to split up to cover more ground. I remembered an old exit that could lead to the alley behind the building. It was risky, but we had no choice."

"Risky how?" I asked, leaning in closer.

"Echo is unpredictable. He's smart and always has a plan," he replied, his intensity palpable. "When I spotted him again, my heart raced. I yelled, 'There he is!' but he slipped away before I could reach him. It was infuriating."

"Didn't you feel frustrated?" I wondered, impressed by how calmly he was handling the situation.

"A little," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "But I kept my focus. We'd get another chance. Ural was monitoring the exits while I took the lead. We set a trap, hoping to corner him. After all, we have to catch him and move him to our base before SkyGod people get to him first."

"Did you succeed?" I asked, feeling my pulse quicken.

"Yes," he said, his expression hardening. "When we set up our ambush, we waited. I could feel the tension in the air. I knew we were close. It was like a game of chess—each move calculated; every outcome planned."

Just then, Ural popped in, his usual goofy grin plastered on his face. "Ah, the thrill of the chase! 'Like a cheetah chasing its lunch!'" he exclaimed, practically beaming.

I shot him a look of disbelief. Seriously? A cheetah?

What happened to Ural today? Why is he being so silly and goofy today? Not to mention how he is too immersed in the world of quotes!

Devon sighed, shooting Ural an annoyed glance. "Ural, can we focus here? This is important."

I couldn't help but smile at the banter. It was nice to see Devon's serious nature crack a little under Ural's silliness. "What happened next?" I urged Devon to continue.

"After what felt like an eternity, I spotted him moving toward the exit," he said, his voice steady but laced with excitement. "I could feel my adrenaline spiking. I thought, 'This is it. We've got him!' But just as I moved in for the capture, Echo turned. He didn't expect us to be waiting, and for a moment, I thought we might lose him again."

Ural chimed in again, this time with a wide grin. "It's like playing hide-and-seek with a ninja!" he declared, clearly enjoying himself.

Devon shot him a look that screamed, Can't you see I'm trying to be serious here?

As I watched Devon, I was struck by the contrast between him and Ural. Here was Devon, all focus and intensity, while Ural flitted about with his ridiculous quotes. Did he really think that was helpful? I felt a chuckle bubbling up, but I suppressed it, not wanting to distract from the gravity of the situation.

"So what happened after you almost lost him?" I asked, eager for the conclusion.

"We finally cornered him in the alley. It was dark, the kind of place where shadows could easily swallow a person whole. But we had him pinned. I stepped forward, and he looked at me, a mix of surprise and admiration in his eyes. 'You caught me,' he said, but he didn't go down without a fight."

I leaned closer, captivated. "What did you do next?"

"Interrogation," he replied, his voice low. "We needed information on SkyGod, specifically who their mysterious strategist is. It was crucial. Echo knew something, but he was playing his cards close to his chest."

"Did he tell you anything?" My heart raced at the thought of uncovering more about this shadowy figure.

"Not much at first. He was cagey, but eventually, I think he realized he was in over his head. I pressed him hard, and he slipped. He mentioned someone named 'The Architect.' But that's all we got before he clammed up again."

Ural jumped in, leaning against the wall with a satisfied grin. "Well, at least he didn't call you 'the architect of his downfall'!" he cackled, clearly proud of his own joke.

I rolled my eyes, feeling a mix of amusement and annoyance. Could he be any more ridiculous?

Devon's eyes narrowed slightly, clearly unimpressed with Ural's antics. "Right, because that's exactly what we need to focus on right now," he said dryly, before turning back to me. "We have to figure out who this Architect is. It's possible they're the mastermind behind the chaos surrounding SkyGod."

I nodded, sensing the urgency in his voice. "So what's the next step?"

"We're digging deeper into the records, looking for any connections to Echo's leads. It's not easy to get intel on Architect. Right now, we are still trying find leads in darknet and other sources."

Ural, ever the jokester, quipped, "Just remember, 'Every cloud has a silver lining—unless it's a storm cloud!'" He chuckled, completely missing the seriousness of our conversation.

How could Devon even put up with this? I wondered, trying to stifle a laugh. Devon's face showed only mild annoyance, but I could see him working hard to maintain his composure.

As Devon and I mulled over the implications of Echo's cryptic mention of "The Architect," Ural, ever the playful spirit, decided it was the perfect moment to nudge Devon into uncharted territory.

"Hey, Devon," Ural said, his voice a mix of mischief and sincerity. "You know, maybe you should tell Illaria how brave you were during the chase. It could really impress her. You've got to paint yourself as the hero of the day!"

I could feel a rush of heat rising to my cheeks at the thought. Devon's expression, however, remained stoic, as if Ural had just suggested he juggle flaming swords.

"Impress her?" Devon replied, furrowing his brow. "That's not really—"

"Oh come on! You caught Echo! You're like a modern-day Robin Hood—except without the tights." Ural winked, clearly relishing the idea of Devon breaking out of his shell.

I chuckled softly, imagining Devon in tights. "Yeah, I'm not sure that would suit him," I teased, looking at Devon's serious face.

Devon shifted uncomfortably, trying to maintain his serious demeanor while the corners of his mouth twitched, as if fighting back a smile. "I just did what needed to be done," he said, his tone a mix of modesty and awkwardness.

"Yeah, but you could make it sound a lot cooler!" Ural insisted, waving his hands animatedly. "You could say something like, 'I stood in the shadows, waiting to catch the ghost of Echo in a daring chase, my heart pounding like a drumbeat in the night!'"

I burst out laughing, picturing Devon delivering that line with his usual deadpan expression. "I can totally see you doing that, Devon," I teased. "Your heart was pounding, right?"

Devon blinked at me, his expression still serious. "Yes, but not like that. It was more like a steady rhythm, you know, focused."

"Steady, focused! That's the essence of a hero!" Ural exclaimed, nudging Devon's shoulder playfully. "Just add a little flair! Maybe throw in something about how you saved the day against all odds. I mean, who doesn't love a good hero story?"

"Like how you saved a bunch of cupcakes from being eaten?" I added with a smirk, remembering the chaotic baking session I had witnessed earlier.

Devon shot me a bemused glance. "Right, because saving pastries is the same as saving lives."

"Hey, they're important pastries!" Ural defended, his voice mock-serious. "A cupcake saved is a cupcake earned!"

Devon shook his head, but I could see a hint of amusement in his eyes. "I suppose I could try to... embellish things a bit."

"Now you're talking!" Ural clapped his hands together. "And you know what? You should definitely include some kind of dramatic gesture! Like—"

I interrupted before he could continue down his ridiculous path. "Devon, just be yourself. Tell the story the way you want to. Ural here is just trying to make it sound like an epic movie trailer."

"Exactly!" Ural agreed. "I'm the producer here, making sure we get all the box office hits!"

Devon rolled his eyes, but I could see the tension in his shoulders ease just a little. "Okay, I'll give it a shot."

As Devon prepared to recount the tale of the chase again, I felt a flutter of excitement. Would he finally drop the seriousness and let a bit of personality shine through?

"Right," he began, his tone shifting slightly. "So, when I spotted Echo in the alley, my heart was racing—not just from adrenaline but from the realization that this was our chance to finally catch him."

"Much better!" Ural exclaimed, beaming with pride as if he'd just witnessed a miracle.

Devon continued, his eyes narrowing as he recalled the moment. "I could see the determination in his eyes. It was like playing a high-stakes game of chess where one wrong move could mean losing everything. I wasn't going to let him escape again."

"There you go! Chess, stakes, the whole deal!" Ural chimed in, bouncing on his heels.

I leaned in closer, mesmerized by how Devon's passion was starting to shine through. "And then what happened?" I urged him.

"He turned to run, but I cut him off. 'This is it,' I thought. 'You're not slipping away this time.'" Devon's voice took on a deeper, more dramatic tone, clearly getting into the storytelling groove.

"Yes! That's the spirit!" Ural cheered, clearly getting into the moment. "And then you threw your arm out, saying, 'Stop right there, Echo!' like a true action hero!"

Devon shot him a glare, but a slight grin tugged at the corners of his mouth. "Maybe something like that," he said, clearly trying to suppress a chuckle.

"Let's not forget the part where you wrestled him to the ground!" Ural added, laughing. "That'll definitely get Illaria's heart racing!"

I shook my head, trying to suppress my laughter as I imagined Devon tackling Echo in slow motion. "You know, Devon, you really should add some flair to the tackling part. Maybe throw in a dramatic line—like, 'This is for all the cupcakes you almost stole!'"

Devon's cheeks flushed, but he played along, "Yeah, that would definitely make me sound like a hero."

"See? You're getting the hang of it!" Ural clapped his hands together, his excitement infectious.

Just then, the door swung open, and Zorion stepped out, holding a colorful bouquet. "Hey, guys! What are we plotting out here?"

"Just planning a cinematic retelling of Devon's epic chase!" Ural exclaimed, not missing a beat. "It's going to be a blockbuster!"

Zorion raised an eyebrow, looking between the two of us. "Devon? Blockbuster? Is the world ending?"

Devon shot him an annoyed glance, but I could see a small smile creeping onto his face. "Very funny, Zorion."

"Well, if you're going to be a hero, I'd suggest a cape," Zorion teased, stepping back inside. "Just don't trip over it while chasing bad guys."

As the laughter continued, I felt a warmth spreading in my chest. This was what family was about—chaos, laughter, and moments that made everything else seem less daunting. Devon might be serious but he is still the ever-charming man who could not be replaced in my heart.

I just wish he could – Heh! Nevermind!

Let him take this at his own pace and understanding.
