Chapter 20 : Why Is This Happening?

News about Trevor's death spread fast especially with his old classmates from school. His best friend, Kyle, could not even go to his classes for days and Chris had to be his shoulder to cry on even though she too mourned for his loss.

Shay and Gio heard it too even when they were in Los Angeles now that he became rich and successful. They were also shocked to find that out. "Oh, my God. Trevor is dead?" The soccer star gasped.

"I can't believe it," His buddy said.

"Erika must be devastated right now." Shay became concerned for his ex-girlfriend.

"Why don't you check-in on her?"

"I would, but she blocked me all over social media and my contact number. remember?"

"Oh, right."

"I don't even know how she's doing now before all this," The famous athlete exasperated.

"Why don't you make a fake account and use it to add her," Jio suggested.

"No thank you, that sounds pathetic."

"Oookay. Wait, I got it." His friend had a lightbulb moment. "I can check her account. If you want."

"That's right. Come on, let's do it," Shay agreed immediately.

His best friend took out his tablet and opened his Facebook then typed the ex-girlfriend's name. "Here it is." The boys checked it out, yet noticed something odd about it. "Hmm... not much update from her, except there are photos of her and Trevor."

"So they've really been dating?" The soccer star thought.

"I won't jump to conclusion just yet, Dude." Jio then took a look of this one photo of them. "Is it just me, or does she look chubby-ish to you?"

Shay glanced at the image again, but from his eyes there was not much difference. "Yeah, I guess she is. It doesn't matter. She seem happier with him... or was. I hope she's okay."

----

Erika was mourning for Trevor in the hospital while Celine was there consoling her daughter through it, "Sweetie, I know you're sad, so am I, but you have to be strong for your baby," she told her daughter.

"Mom, I don't know how to be strong right now. I feel like it's my fault that he's gone," Erika weeped.

"Honey, no. Stop saying that." Celine shook her head and then wiped Erika's face from the tears she was pouring.

"Trevor had been so nice to me. I won't have the chance to thank him for everything he had done for me and my baby."

"I think he knows that. It's gonna be okay." Her comforted her daughter knowing that she went through so much in one year.

The day of the funeral, Erika was not able to go since she still had to recover from early childbirth, though she wanted to for Trevor. So was the other old friends anyway, not just her.

Instead, she went to the NICU alone and watched her baby boy being inside a plastic transparent box since her mother was at work while her father was out of town again.

Erika even looked back at the time Trevor had been so good to her during her pregnancy. Everything felt like everything was falling apart right in front of her. Her dreams, her school and her friend all in one year.

"He's going to be fine," a female voice said that it starled the poor girl. It was a nurse. "We don't see any complications even though he's born premature."

"Oh, that's great," Erika replied.

"I'm sorry about the father."

"Hmm...?"

"I remember you and him from the check-up." The nurse recognized. "I can't believe he's gone. He seems like a great guy, Not a lot of teen fathers are like him. How long were you guys together?"

"Uhm... Not that long," The teenager answered.

"I see. Anyway, I just want to ask if you have thought of a name."

"Oh, I..." The young mother turned to her son and recalled that Trevor jokingly suggested to name the baby after him.

"That's okay, you have plenty of time anyway."

"Trevor. His name is Trevor." Erika blurted. "Trevor James Row."

The nurse smiled at the teenager. "Good choice."

Once she was left alone, Erika spotted a couple with their baby being held by its mother as she sat on a wheelchair with the father pushing in the hallway. She saw how happy and complete they were.

It made her remember Trevor once agaon, when he lied on her check-up that he was the father of her child and that he was willing to be one, "I wish you're here," she sighed, then looked back to her son.

"You okay, Sweetie?" asked Celine as she got back from work.

"Oh! hey, Mom. Yeah, I'm fine. By the way, I just gave my baby a name."

"Really? Tell me. What is it?"

"Trevor. Trevor James Row," Erika answered excitedly.

"Trevor James Row." Celine was in awe to hear the full name of her grandson to be named after his mother's close friend who took cared of them, then hugged her daughter. "I love it, Honey. Trevor would be so happy."

"Thanks, Mom," Erika said back. "I wish he was here to see it. He always kept bugging me about it."

"Wherever he is, I'm sure that he's thrilled. So does that mean we have him Trevor too?"

"Hmm... yeah, I guess, but it sounds kinda weird calling him that."

"So James then,"

The girl thought about it, then shook her head. "I don't know, he doesn't look like a James either."

Her mother frowned, "You gave him two wonderful names and not call him either one?" she questioned.

"Well, I didn't think I was going to give birth soon and I can still call him Trevor." Then Erika looked at the couple's way again with a newborn baby in the mother's arm.

Celine noticed that she became distracted. "What are you looking at, Honey?"

The girl darted back to her mother with a flustered look in her face. "Uhm... nothing."

"Anything on your mind?"

The teenager smiled at her mother. "I guess I'll get my motherly instincts too someday. I was just wondering when Trevor lied about being the father, was he really going to step up to be a father to a kid that's not his?"

"Well, after everything he did to you, anything is possible." Celine shrugged. "You'd be suprise what some nice guys like him would do especially when he lost his own child."

"I suppose, but still... I mean..."

"Where is this going, honey?"

"Look at them, mom." Erika showed her mother the happy family. "I wish I could give that to Baby Trevor. Not that I had to marry Trevor, but maybe it would be nice that my baby has a dad that was there for him."

"Oh, like your Dad?"

"Yeah... maybe."

Celine embraced her daughter. "He has you and me to love him."

"And Dad," Erika reminded.

"Yes, sure. Him too," The woman grumbled.

The next day, the mother and daugther were just about to finish breakfast until a nurse knocked then opened the door. "Excuse me, you have a visitor," The nurse told them.

It was Trevor's mother wanting to see them as she entered. "Mrs. Dell, Hi!" Erika greeted as she was surprised to see her, and so was Celine.

"Hello, Dear, I hope you don't mind me dropping by," The woman said. Her eyes were puffy probably from all the crying.

"Oh, not at all, Mrs. Dell."

"How are you doing?" Celine asked.

"I wish I can say I'm feeling better, but I'm not." Mrs. Dell answered.

"We still can't believe he's gone. Your son is a wonderful young man."

"Thank you. I still can't accept that he's... dead. I like to think that he's in England right now after his boss called me that he got in."

Erika was stunned to hear that last part. "Trevor got in?"

"Yes," Mrs. Dell confirmed. "I hate that he's not able to go there to achieve his goals."

"How's Thea?"

"She's still grieving. It is harder on her than it is on me and my husband. She looks up to Trevor."

"Some people just have no conscience," Celine added. "They disregard the people they took from us."

"That's right." Trevor's mother looked around the room. "Anyway, where's your baby? I am looking forward to meet him."

"Oh, he's in the NICU. He's in the middle of a treatment right now. It'll only take fifteen minutes. We can go there after that, if you want," Erika replied.

"Yes, I'd love that."

"I'm sorry, that I couldn't go to the funeral. Any news about the... you know?"

"No, the detectives has no lead," Mrs. Dell choked.

"Let's keep praying that they will," Celine said.

"As much as I wanted justice over my son's death, I know it's not going to get my son back. Right now, we're planning to move Chiara's remains next to Trevor's."

Erika put on a sweet smile on her face. "So that they'll be together."

"That's right. I know wherever he is, he'll be with his daughter."

Later, they went to the NICU to show Trevor's mother her child after his daily treatment was just about done. "There he is," The the teenager introduced. "Trevor James Row."

"Trevor?" Mrs. Dell's face lit up, and it looked like that was the first time she looked happy eversince the death of her son. "You named him Trevor?"

"Yes, I did."

"Thank you." The grieving mother hugged Erika tightly and began to tear up again. This time it was tears of joy. "This is so sweet of you."

"He wanted me to name my son after him," The girl replied.

"My son would be so happy. And look at your baby. He's adorable. If he was Trevor's son, he'd be passing a name."

"Oh, right, Trevor is a junior."

"Correct, he just didn't like to be called TJ when he turned thirteen," Mrs. Dell explained. "That little fella would be the third."

Erika began thinking about it. "Hmm... The third?" she mumbled.

Afterwards, they head back to the girl's room because Trevor's mother was about to leave. "By the way, before I forget. We're going to move to Hong Kong," Mrs. Dell informed.

"Oh?"

"It's for the best after everything that's happening to us. Anyway, Crumbs, Trevor's dog."

"Oh, that's right, Crumbs," Erika recalled. "I almost forgot about him. How is he?"

"I think he missed him too. He's been whimpering all night. We can't bring him with us since my husband is allergic and all. We were planning to put him up for adoption instead."

The teenager did not react well to that. "Oh, no!"

"I know, I feel terrible. I don't know what else to do with him, unless... You want him?"

Erika and her mother looked at each other after that suggestion to them.
