Josh, Lina, and Maddy were all in Josh's bedroom floor as they tried to come up with a plan for how the fuck they were going to perform an exorcism.
Josh paced back and forth while Lina and Maddy sat on his bed. His hands were tangled frustratedly in his hair. "We are fucking teenagers! How the hell are we supposed to stop a demon? Also don't you absolutely need a priest for it to actually work?" He stressed.
Lina shook her head. "Relax, J. And no, technically you don't. You just need anyone who believes in faith and is on the more highly religious side. AKA me."
"Josh?" Maddy asked in a quiet voice.
He stopped pacing and looked at her. "Yeah?"
Tears filled her eyes and her lip wobbled. "I'm really scared."
Josh's shoulders slumped. "Me too," he admitted.
Lina whined. "I'm scared too but I can't have you guys getting soft on me! We have to kick some demon ass together!"
Josh sighed. "You're right," he looked at Maddy. "What are you scared of Mads?"
She sighed as well. "What do we do if we can't save Tyler?" She asked. "He's getting worse and worse and if this demon thing takes over completely won't it just continue getting bad?"
Lina looked at them. "We can't think negativity guys. If we don't think we can save him we won't be able to. We'll give up. Dammit I miss my best friend and I need him back. Josh needs his boyfriend. Maddy needs her big brother. We'll get him back."
Josh nodded. "So how are we gonna go about doing this?"
Lina opened her backpack and grabbed out the books her grandma had just given them along with the information she wrote down. "So we know we'll have to do it Halloween night."
"Where are we doing it?" Maddy asked.
"It came from your house so it seems best to banish it in your house."
"How do we banish it?" Josh followed up.
Lina grinned. "Lots of holy water, crosses, and Jesus," she turned to Maddy. "Your family's never really been religious so that may be tricky but I think I can handle it."
"Okay... so you've got that covered," Josh nodded. "How are we getting by Jay and Kelly?"
"That's where you and Maddy come in. I need you to ask if you can have the house to yourself so you can plan a surprise for your and Tyler's anniversary. Say Maddy has to help. See if their mom can take Jay to their dad's or something and persuade her to go out or something. We just need to have the house empty from like nine to midnight. Maddy you'll have to distract Tyler while we set up."
"What are we setting up?" She asked.
Lina took a deep breath. "We'll probably have to tie him down. The demon's obviously powerful or at least a lot more powerful as it's sucking Tyler's soul. It's going to use Tyler's body as a vessel. It doesn't care what happens to Tyler or his body. If we don't get rid of this demon it'll just keep using as many people as it needs. We have to make sure Tyler doesn't get hurt during this."
Josh rubbed his face. "This is gonna be hard for me, Lina," he told her. "I love him so much."
"I know. I do too. That's why we have to do whatever it takes to save Tyler."
"Lina?" Maddy piped up.
"Yeah?"
"What did your grandma mean when she said that thing about Tyler never being the same again?"
Lina frowned. "I don't know."
Josh brought his thumb to his mouth and began biting on his black nail polish anxiously. "So we won't get old Tyler back? Ever?"
"I don't know," she repeated. "I hope we can get him back."
The three continued making a loose plan for next week. They had obviously never performed an exorcism before but with Lina's knowledge on the supernatural, Josh's knowledge on Tyler, and Maddy's knowledge on the show Supernatural they figured out the basics of what they needed to do.
"Alright," Josh checked the time on his phone. "I should get you both home."
The three got into Josh's car and he decided to drop Lina off first because he wanted to talk to Maddy before she went home.
As soon as Josh made sure Lina got inside okay, he was backing out of her driveway and starting a conversation with his boyfriend's little sister. "Maddy?"
"Yeah?"
"I'm sorry," Josh spoke guiltily.
"What? Why are you sorry?" Maddy replied.
Josh took a shaky breath. "This is my fault. I coaxed Tyler into fucking with a ouija board and I told him nothing was going to happen because neither of us have had experience with anything supernatural," he let out a dry laugh. "Funny how foreshadowing works."
"Josh, it's not your fault. You didn't know anything was going to happen. It's not your fault or Tyler's fault or anyone's really. I still don't know if I completely believe you but I remember every time I've looked into Tyler's eyes he just looks empty. I guess he is."
"I hope the real Tyler's still aware of everything happening," Josh said. "I hope he knows I still love him. I knew there was a reason it felt wrong to dump him. It hasn't even been him the last month."
"I wish we would've known sooner," Maddy sighed. "But I guess we wouldn't have been able to do anything until Halloween."
"At least we wouldn't have felt as bad about ourselves."
Josh pulled into her driveway and put the car in park. "Josh?"
"Hmm?"
Maddy unbuckled her seatbelt and leaned over the center console, giving him a hug. "Thank you."
He hugged back but he was confused. "For what?"
"Stepping up and being my big brother while my actual big brother is struggling."
They pulled apart and Josh gave her a sad smile. "That's what family's for. You're my family, Lina and her family is my family, Tyler's my family. I would do anything for you guys."
Maddy smiled back. "I know."
She got out and was about to walk off when Josh rolled down the passenger window and called out to stop her. "Maddy?"
"Yeah?"
"Please be safe. I can't lose you too."
Maddy gave him a small thumbs up. "I will."
Josh just hoped whatever's cursed the Joseph family wouldn't hurt anyone else in that house.
