127: Reflections.
Night fell quickly, and the storm began to act once again. The rain had began to fall and the thunder had began to strike, not like anyone in the base could actually see it with the shutters covering every opening possible. It could only be heard, and Liy struggled to rest with the rain pounding on the glass of her window, the one that was blocked off by Two. She groaned and buried her head into her pillow, trying to block it out, as well as the pain in her body.
After she had been beaten up by her new enemies yesterday, she had passed out for a while. She woke up in a mess of her own blood, and so she had to clean up AGAIN. She was surprised she wasn't dead.. but knew she wouldn't be so lucky next time. Though.. it's better their attention was diverted to her rather than Coiny or something else.. she could handle them while others couldn't, and she saw that for herself a few days ago when Gelatin stood clueless in the face of Barfbag.
Liy had nothing to lose.
She had spent most of her day recovering in her bed from being beaten yesterday, having tried to bandage up her now missing arm. Luckily it was the one she didn't use much.. but it had been her previously NON injured one. The one she was left with had been hurt by Barfbag during when she being blackmailed in Twos underground room.
At least it was her good arm.. though, because she could still fight. If she lost her ability to fight she would practically be helpless. She was terrible with her left arm, so was kind of glad that one was gone instead of her right one.
She had never thought Barfbag to be the violent type, but oh did she think wrong. Barfbag had changed a lot.. she was practically someone else. Not because of anyone else, she chose to be this way.. it was clear that she was just greedy and sadistic.
So Liy had tried to get some rest to help heal her wounds, hoping Two would be gaslit into thinking that she was always this hurt and they wouldn't think anything of her newly sliced off arm. She had been having trouble getting used to the fact she only had one arm to do things with, it was harder than she had expected it to be. Stupid Barfbag ..Liy would make sure she paid for all of this eventually. She was starting to be a bigger threat than Two themselves.
She lay in her bed currently, her gaze focused on her ceiling while her arm rested on her chest. God ..her body hurt so much.. luckily she was plastic and durable.. unlike Loser, who would probably die if she punched him a dozen times. She did not feel good though .. this was the most she had been hurt before.
Someone knocked on her door, hard.
She sat up immediately, giving a tired groan as her first thought was that it was going to be Barfbag or Loser.. though, she then thought more logically. If it had been either of them, they would have just let themselves in. Okay.. who did that leave? Was it Two? God, that was worse, please no. She cleared her throat. "Come innn.." she weakly called, sliding her legs over the edge of her bed to wait.
The door opened faster than she expected, and Coiny came through almost instantly, slamming it shut behind him like he was afraid of being seen. He had his sword with him, and held it up as soon as he made his way inside, remaining tense in the presence of Liy, the sound of the slammed door having echoed off the walls, before leaving the two in temporary silence. She was amused.. she would have made a joke but she didn't feel up to it. Actually.. yeah, she was up to it.
"Wow.. this is a lot different than I remember, did we switch roles?" She tiredly sneered, smirking at him weakly as he seemed so serious. He kept a careful eye on her, noticing her arm.. what... on earth happened to her. He didn't want to get distracted, looking away from it and clutching his sword tighter.
"Enough!" He raised his voice back at her in demand to make her be quiet, but didn't look like he was trying to be threatening.. it looked like he was scared. She decided not to make any sudden moves, kind of curious as to what brought him here.. obviously he was here for a reason, and she wanted to know what that reason was.
"...What brings you here exactly? There's like, 50 other places you could go in this building to chill out.." She reminded enthustically, pointing to the door. He didn't seem to be amused by her jokes, approaching her carefully with the sword angled straight at her, her observing its pointed edge.
"If you wanted to kill me, you would have done so already. " she commented slowly.
She had a good point..that's why she wasn't afraid. She knew that his intentions were something else.. but she wanted to know what that something else was. His hands looked like they were trembling, but she didn't say anything about it. "I..I read the diary.." he whispered shakily, as if he was afraid to say it. His eyes were glued to hers, watching her every expression.
She raised her eyebrows, kind of surprised to hear this. "You did..?" She blurted, not expecting that. He seemed so resistant before... was this really true? He denied wanting anything to do with Liy previously.. so this was a sudden turn of events for her. How did she not know he was being blackmailed to say this or something? To catch her out? She kept her guard up.
"Y-Yes.. and.." his words were uneasy, like he didn't know what to say.. or how to say it. It was like he was holding back in fear.. she didn't blame him, she wouldn't trust herself either. "I..I...I trust you..even ..if I-I don't think I should .." he choked out, her softening up and losing her small smirk.
"..Donut is dead...a-and Gelatin is gone- and I..I , I'm.. ..I don't know. ..wh-what else to do. You're th-the only other one who has spoken to me...b-but I know what you're capable of. You..you got so many killed. D-Don't think I don't know that-" he warned, his words shaking. His hands were trembling as they weakly clutched his sword, and she was convinced he was on the verge of tears. Her theory was proven right, not saying a word.
He began to sob a little, her watching tears run down his metal cheek. "I'm sc-scared.. what do I ...do? Who am I supposed..to trust? I..I don't know what I'm meant to do and..and Gelatin isn't here- and I-I know Barfbag is trying to scare me..P-Pin is dead.. and everyone I-I know..i..isn't here anymore" his voice cracked, she could visibly see how unstable he was.. it only just set in for her that he had lost Donut AND Pin so close together and so.. fast.
"Wh..why did you tell me to read that diary..?" He weeped, trying to wipe his tears with his free hand. Liy knew it was her turn to speak now, trying to find the right words to say. "..I.. " her voice was low.
"..I.. I wanted you.. to know the truth-" She muttered softly, but was cut off.
"Why do you CARE?!" He raised his voice, moving closer to her with the sword as his lip quivered. "Y-YOU got Fries killed.. and ..and it said in the diary he was good. Why would you want me to know that..? Why would you want me to know about Donuts powers?!" He shot a bunch of questions at her in a cry, clearly overwhelmed.
She didn't know what to say.. because she didn't have an answer. Why did she want him to find out.. what was the straightforward answer? Why did she care so much? "F-First off- Coiny, I.. s ..sssomething happened to me, okay? And.. it was to do with you. I realised you ..had amniesa, and-"
"I KNOW I have amesisa!!" he raged and stabbed into the floor violently with his sword, growling lowly from having to say it with his own words, her startled from that gesture. "I can't FORGET, that I have amesisa. Every DAY I struggle to remember who I was.. everything about my past is a blur.. my memories don't ALING.." His breathing was heavy, and he didn't stop crying. She tried to put her hand out, him letting go of the sword and leaving it stabbed in the ground as he brought both his hands to his face.
"Y-You know..?"
"Donut told me ages ago." He sniffled, but wasn't finished crying, too unstable to stop. "Wh-why.. did you want m-me to know.." he blubbered, hicking.
"Y..You deserved to know. I..I thought you didn't." She admitted, kind of uneasy from his fragile state.
"Well, I do.." he murmured effortlessly, looking down at the floorboards miserably, rubbing his eye with the back of his hand as he attempted to calm down. "D-Donut has told me I was used.. and .. lied to already. I just.. didn't know all the other stuff.. h-he said he would tell me when I was doing better." He looked back at her again, glaring as he had stop crying so much.
"B-But..why do YOU care if you.. are with Two anyways..." He sniffed.. he wanted to know.. he needed to know. "Y-You've.. done so many bad things.. wh...why..do you care about me? We were NEVER friends.." at least he didn't think so..
She couldn't break eye contact with him, watching him struggle to keep himself stable. "W..We weren't. I just.. pitied you because of..your situation? I guess..it.. opened my eyes. And.. I wanted to open yours too. Guess Donut had already done that for me." She uttered in irritation, her mouth slipping into a frown.
She did all of that for Coiny to already know about his amniesa anyways.. how annoying. She had a hunch he did know but.. was still annoyed that he had been directly told all of this. Though..she was still interested. "So.. why are you here again?" She repeated, looking back over to him.
"Because I wanted to KNOW your motives. I..I told you I'm scared.. I don't know who to trust.." he faltered, trailing off as he seemed to get upset again, wiping his eye frantically with the side of his hand.
"Look.. I..know this is super weird because of.. like, me being this whole villain, which I WAS, no doubt.." she laughed a little at that, but weakly. "But.. you can trust me now. I've..I'm changing. I'm not with Two anymore...so..yeah."
"You're with..Four?"
"I wouldn't say that." She immediately rolled her eyes, bored at the mention. "I'm just.. I'm not.. sure. I know I don't want this.. or ..know why I did want this before. Kind of like you." She muttered the last part quietly to herself, him not hearing it.
"Are..are you sure I can trust you..?" His voice seemed to lose aggression.. he was clearly beginning to believe her and drop his tension. He wouldn't usually be so open and vulnerable, but didn't have anyone else to go to.. or anything else to do. He had been terrified the last few days on his own, because he felt like had nobody left to trust and alone.
He had read the diary before Donut died.. he didn't expect him to die so soon.. it was so sudden that Coiny didn't even get to confront him about what Coiny had read. He had refused to trust Liy beforehand, let alone talk to her, but she seemed genuine right now. He understood what it was like to go through that change.. it had been hard for him to gain the trust of Donut.. but in a way it was easier because Donut knew of Coinys amnesia and knew his actions and behaviour had a reason.
However with Liy.. what was her reason? Why had she changed? She had been one of the strongest and toughest members, because of that she was successful in killing and hurting many. She had a horrid reputation..so why had she switched all of a sudden?
It seemed strange.. but he felt like he could take her word for all of this. Maybe.. he could put his trust in her.. he didn't know what else to do if not.. it didn't seem like she was lying. "..Does anyone else know about you..?" He questioned, his eye feeling warm and sore from his crying.
"Huh? Like..my change? No.. just you." She
informed, looking down at her injured ankle for a moment. "Well.. not JUST you.. " she looked back at him, observing his curiosity, mixed with fear and anger. She had no idea if Coiny knew about.. Barfbags fake exterior. "Look.. there's a lotta stuff I gotta tell you.. if you're willing to trust me now, that is." She warned, being serious.
He considered it, wiping his eye.. he didn't... know admittedly. He knew he hadn't much of a choice however, wiping it harsher before looking away. "What do you need to say." He lowly questioned, but it was more like a demand.
"Welll.. the problem IS, this is all linked. Like.. uh, ..I was with Donut..when.. he died. Well.. I just had arrived when it happened, actually. That's why my arm-" she didn't finish, surprised as Coiny got all up in her face.
"What the hell are you saying?! You DID this?! Is that why your arm is-" she put her hand over his mouth to shut him up, but he hit it away, backing up from her. She still spoke, though. "Can you just listen to me?? Uh, no, I didn't KILL Donut! BARFBAG killed him!!" She shouted back in retort, not liking to be accused. She regret saying this however..as soon as Coiny retracted his hand and stared wide eyed, his lips parted but he couldn't speak.
"B-..Barfbag.. killed him?" He repeated what he had heard after a few more moments, the words barely escaping as he struggled to handle this information. He looked to the ground..Gelatin mentioned something about her spying on Donut..so he didn't trust her regardless of this information. But.. she was Donuts close.. friend. Sure.. she had been up to some sketchy stuff, but.. had she really.. killed him? How..could she.
Liy nodded, looking guilty. "Yeah.. sorryyyyy." She pucked her lips awkwardly. "Uh, ..yeahhh ..not good at this sorta thing. But.. when I got into the room she was gonna kill Gelatin so.. I jumped in. He got away but.. yeah, I hardly did."
Coiny felt guilty..but also rage grow inside him. He tried to process this, thinking of how this could be possible.. how could Barfbag do this. "..Why ..?" He choked breathlessly.
".To..get his powers." Liy uttered, watching him struggle to process it. "..If.. its any help, Gelatin got away safe and sound. Plusss, he took Donuts body so.. Barfbag can't get the powers now.."
Coiny was speechless.. how..COULD she. He felt anger boil inside him.. he knew that the story of how Donut died in Twos words wasn't real. There was no way there would have been an intruder.. not with this security. He didn't realise how dangerous she actually.. was. He remembered the camera Gelatin found in Coinys room.. he spoke of his suspicions of Barfbag but hadn't actually expanded much on it.
Coiny began to connect the dots..
The implications had been Barfbag had potentially killed Pin because of her having the camera to know he was going to see Pin and.. her being proved evil, but Coiny denied this. Yet with this new information.. how could he ignore it. She.. would have no problem killing Pin. But.. why? Why the hell would she do that?! What the FUCK had Pin done to her?! She had abused her power in this building throughly.
"..Did.. Barfbag kill Pin." Coiny asked bluntly, his voice low as he slowly looked up at Liy. Liy seemed hesitant to give a response, trying to form a sentence.
"I....Look, it-"
"DID. Barfbag. KILL.. PIN." Coiny repeated, more threatening and impatient as before, demanding an answer out of her. Liy felt defeated, shaking her head slowly as she knew that she would have to say. She didn't..want to lie to him.
"..Yes.." She confirmed, whispering.
Coiny bit his lip and laughed lowly, swiftly swiping out his sword from the ground as he shook his head in disbelief. "I'M GOING TO KILL HER..." He yelled in rage, swiftly turning and not wasting any time. Liy was startled from this reaction, her eyes widening as she jumped off the bed.
"Wait!-" she cried in plead, stumbling from her bad heel as she grabbed onto his wrist, holding him back. He tried to yank himself away immediately, aggressive. "Let GO. I'm going to make her PAY!"
"Y-You can't let her know that YOU know this!! I'm the only other one who knows and she will realise that I told you!!" Liy explained quickly, Coiny kind of surprised from how panicked she became. Yet he still looked at her with confusion and frustration, trying to pull his arm out her grip. "So?? What's the big deal?! She'll be dead ANYWAYS when I'm done with her!!!"
"SHE'S blackmailing me- so is Loser-" Liy suddenly blurted, breathing out. She couldn't believe she said that, avoiding looking at Coinys mortified expression as she let go, bringing a head to her head in stress. "Shit- for fuck sake, Coiny! You're killing me here!" She whined.
"What do you mean.. blackmailed..with what?" He was uneasy from her sudden reveal, slowly lowering his sword to his side. Loser..too? He was a part of this? Was that why she was so beat? Was it those two who did that to her? He felt more fury at the thought..but.. if what Liy said was true, ..he ..didn't want to get her killed.
Liy groaned, dropping her arm to her side. "I shouldn't have said anything.." she added with a worried look, obviously having wanted to keep that to herself.
"You already did." He reminded sharply, glaring expectantly. It was clear he wanted her to expand on what she had said, needing to know more about this.
She rolled her eyes at his persistence, before walking backwards and slumping back on the bed again, her body aching too much to stay stood up for any longer. "..Look.." she exhaled heavily, looking up at her ceiling after. "When I was first.. curious, I looked in Donuts Diary and.. found out about the CD in the basement. Turns out Barfbag had seen me do that and followed me down there. We got into a fight and.. she blackmailed me, saying if I didn't "work with her" she would show Two what I was up to.. which is pretty fucking annoying...but if Two finds out I was down there.. I'll be killed. Oh, she also threatened to cut off my arm if I didn't, so.. that too." She shrugged, looking down at her missing one "It's gone now anyways, should've known.."
Coiny furrowed his eyebrows.. he felt more violent towards Barfbag knowing that she had this all under control, and she had been planning this out step by step.. she had everyone in her hands and.. even had Two fooled. It was like she was playing a game.. she had done too much..Coiny probably didn't even know ALL of what she had done. ..he wanted to KILL her. "..You.. went down to ..listen to that CD?" He decided to focus on this, finally laying down his sword on the ground again.
"Uh, duh, you bet I did.." Liy laughed, in a regretful way. "Hmm.. I guess I'm..pretty glad I did, because it helped me realise a lot. But.. it's got me in a huge damn mess.." she admitted, rolling her eyes at her own pathetic fail.
"What was on it..?" He uttered with merely a whisper.
She had to look up at him to make sure she had heard that right, giving a look of unease. "What..?" She half laughed, trying to smile but.. felt concerned. "Coiny.. You're.. pretty unstable enough already, no offense. And.. anyways, I don't..know. I didn't get to listen to it long enough. All I remember was that Two invited you into an room.. you took a seat." She looked down at him, frowning as she knew this would be no help.
He froze up, squeezing his eyes shut. "H..Hold on.." he faltered, feeling dizziness overcome him. His head hurt.. faint memories came back to him. He remembered.. he remembered sitting down after.. being invited. He was the only object in the room. He . ..He..
He ..
He didn't know anymore. He couldn't remember. He opened his eyes. "..I..Sorry, I..don't..recall much. "
"Don't apologise, you did nothing." She went to pat the bed beside her, signalling to him to sit down. He stared at her for a moment as she did this gesture, before moving over and sitting down, avoiding looking at her. He was much shorter than her anyways so, didn't need to try. As long as he didn't look up he wouldn't look at her.
He muttered something, she was pretty sure it was him saying it was okay. They sat there quietly for a moment.. Coiny had to take this all in. He was.. happy to have someone else on his side, despite eveything in his head telling him to run miles from her. He was still unsure of her true intentions or if she was lying to gain his trust..which was why he was being careful.
But.. something about her didn't seem that way. She didn't seem like she was doing this to fool him.
Maybe it was okay to trust her. Barfbag though? Oh.. he was going to make her fucking PAY. Somehow.. one day, definitely. He would make her fucking suffer for all the problems she had caused. She had no mercy.. no remorse, no excuse. She was just pure evil.. she didn't deserve to walk this earth and breathe this air. She deserved nothing but death.. painful and unforgettable death. He grit his teeth without even realising, wanting to smack her.
He would have killed her.. but he didn't want Liy to get hurt. This all made him skeptical.. because Liy could very well be working with Barfbag. If that was the case.. he would be upset, of course, but he would just kill Liy as well.
He hoped that wasn't the case.
"I'm..kind.. of relieved Pins death wasn't a suicide.." he unexpectedly began, his words quiet and Liy barely hearing them. She made a face of confusion. "What?? You are?"
"Well.. yeah. I..It means she hadn't given up after all... that she still had faith.. maybe in me. I thought she .. did it to herself, because she ..felt like she had nothing else left... or something" He explained, his voice wavering.
"..Hm.. that's a pretty positive way to look at it." Liy complimented, nodding in agreement. "I.. guess if you look at it like that.."
They drifted off into quietness again. Liy would not have imagined herself doing this two or three weeks ago. That long ago she was.. well, attacking the lab. She couldn't believe how much she had changed and.. how her mindset has basically done a switch. She still wasn't even completely sure why.. only knowing that there was something she didn't know about herself.
She wanted to know.. she wanted to know so badly.
She gazed down into Coinys sword, it was on the floor below her. The metal was shiny and clean despite its chips and scratches, the light reflected off of it and made it highlighted. She kept her eyes focused on it, seeing her reflection in the metal.
She had a vision..she stood in a room, she didn't know where.. everything was blurry. The floor was wooden and there was tables everywhere..could this be the exit? She stood in front of something..it was glass.. or a mirror.. or.. something, but she stood and put her hand up, seeing her reflection on the other side, touching the glass while it replicated her.
"Where did everyone else go.. Four?" She spoke, turning to the numeral.
She blinked a few times, not realising her breathing had picked up a little. What was that.. she didn't remember...that. What the fuck.. what the fuck. She gripped the bedsheets with her remaining hand, looking away from the reflection and avoiding looking at it again.
"Coiny.." she spoke up over the silence, wanting to fill it and avoid her thoughts. She needed to know something ..something only he would know.. something that would help her.
"Mh?" He tiredly looked over, his eye lidded, sore from tears.
She gripped the bedsheets tighter. "..Um.. what .. is it like to have amniesa? Like.. how did you know you had it?" She looked off to avoid eyecontact, making the question out like it was no big deal. But.. it was a big question, and it was strange and specific.
Coiny didn't expect that, blinking to try and think of a way to explain it. "Umm..I.. guess.. it.." he wasn't sure.. it was such an odd feeling. "Well.. I..I guess it was like ..suddenly having a fever deam. Things made sense before.. ..but something clicked and..suddenly it didn't. Except.. the dream was my reality, so.. I didn't understand why it didn't make sense anymore." He explained, his voice wavering as Liy hung on every word he said.
"T-Two told me a bunch of lies.. planted them in my head so I would trust them. A-And.. I did.. because I-I thought it was the truth. I..then had my first memory.. and..i-it didn't make any sense because it.. didn't match up with what Two had.. told me previously." He wiped his eye with his palm. "Gnhh.. I tried to block it out but they kept happening and.. I felt worse and more confused each day. I was scared and didn't know what was real anymore.. I felt like.. I-I didn't even know myself."
Liy gazed at him with sorrow, but said nothing. That sounded.. terrible. He had no support for all that time.. she couldn't imagine how he would have felt. It would have driven her insane.. "Donut helped me eventually because I..uh, peaked. I..I know the truth, now.." he reassured, giving a glance to Liys missing arm.
He sighed from having to explain such a heavy topic, sniffing a bit from getting emotional, too. "..Uh..why do you ask..?" He curiously inquired, after recollecting himself.
She perked up, not expecting him to switch the conversation to her instead. She didn't know if she should explain..maybe not yet. Coiny probably either wouldn't know what to say or wouldn't believe her. It was too much to lay on him right now.. but she took what he said into consideration. She supposed it was kind of like that for her.. except she remembered everything. It was.. more like a state of mind, than a belief. She wasn't like Coiny who believed what Two said, she agreed with it and.. went along with it. Coiny just trusted them.
It was a different situation... and she still didn't completely understand it. But.. she seemed to be.. seeing a lot of things lately, like..in her head. Hearing people say things to her and.. re-imagining events that had happened to her. Except..she didn't remember them happening to her, it.. was almost like..
She had forgotten important things. ALL of the important things to explain why this had happened to her.
Someone was hiding something from her.. something she wasn't supposed to know.
"I-I dunno. Just wondering. " she excused, hoping it would be enough to get him off her back. The last thing she needed was for someone to worry about her. She wasn't ready for that kind of concern right now. Coiny seemed to take the bait, looking across the room.
"Well.. that's..how it feels.." he second guessed his judgement after a moment or two, peering over to her. "Are you.. really curious ..or..are you just hiding something? You should KNOW I'm still scared you're working with Barfbag right now.." he held his arms, looking away again in distrust.
She hesitated, going to complain about that but didn't. She understood from his perspective how it would look that way .."Look, I AINT working with her, kayyyy? I.. just.. have been thinking lately. It was more about myself... when I asked. " she admitted, frowning as she avoided looking at him as well.
He sat up as she said that. "..W..What..? ..What do you mean..?"
Did the same thing happen to her? No.. that didn't make sense.. she was open about her previous life and friendships so.. she knew it had existed.. she clearly remembered the competition."Liy..?"
She awkwardly swung her legs as they hung over the bed. "L-Look..okay. It's probably too complicated right now. It's..nothing bad for you, though. Just trust me.. okay?? I need you to.. because I'm..not read to tell you ye-"
"I'll wait for you." He cut in, not letting her finish. She raised an eyebrow at his intrusion, glancing back at him for a moment. "You..will? Damn.. well, that was easy.."
"I understand..your hesitance so.. I'll trust you. But if I find out you're using me right now.. I'll rip you in two pieces. "
She laughed.
