Chapter 25
The next day, Janus woke up with a purpose.
He had one week left with the heroes, he was gonna make the most of it.
He got dressed quickly and marched out to the living room, where Logan was watching the news.
“Hello, Janus.” He nodded.
“I want to go out.” Janus told him plainly. Logan blinked, brow furrowing in confusion.
“I’m sorry?”
“I want to go do something. What’s something we haven’t done yet. An amusement park, maybe? We could go to one of those.”
“Is there a reason you would like to go out?” Logan asked. “We just went out yesterday, and I was under the impression that you weren’t the biggest fan of it.”
Janus scrambled for the first excuse he could think of. “I want a do-over." He said shortly. "If we go to an amusement park, we could go in our suits. It’ll be a treat for the kids there?” He offered.
Logan hummed. “That could be fun, actually. Not a bad idea. Perhaps we could do it tomorrow--”
“We should do it today.” Janus interjected. “I want to do something else tomorrow.”
Logan frowned. “Well, I was thinking we should try and figure out what the villains are up to today. If they’ve given us a notice, I believe it is very important--”
“I want to spend time with all of you before that. Y’know, just in case something happens.” Janus shrugged sheepishly. “We haven’t gone out much.”
“I suppose you’re right.” Logan sighed, looking away in thought. After few seconds, he grabbed the remote and turned the television off. “Fine, go and see if the others are willing to go. I’ll go put my suit on.” With that, he stood up and left the living room.
---
Needless to say, they were all on board.
They entered the park (which had the strange name of ‘Sandersland’) and Janus beheld the sight of hundreds of people walking about, some holding toys or food. It was more people than he had ever seen.
There were also games, rides, and buildings that seemed too fantastical to be real. Janus had never seen anything like it in his life.
People gave them glances, but not like the judgemental ones in the restaurant. These were in awe and quiet admiration. After all, it wasn’t everyday that all six members of the League of Heroes were seen together. The man selling the park tickets almost fainted at the sight of them.
“It’s been so long since I’ve been to one of these!” Remus chirped, bouncing up and down. “Deceit, do you like rollercoasters?!” He turned to him, grinning brightly.
Janus shrugged. “I dunno. I’ve never been on one.” He admitted, glancing up at the huge contraption in front of them.
The ride was big and red, with huge rails, loops, turns, and angles Janus didn’t think were possible. A car zoomed across the tracks at a high speed, full of screaming people.
Janus paled at the thought of getting on that death trap.
“They’re so fun!” Remus told him, grabbing onto his arm. “We have to go on one! Right, Paranoia?!” He looked at Virgil.
Virgil blanched, quickly looking away. “Uh--You can, maybe, but I’m not going.”
A cheeky expression made its way onto Remus’ face. “What? You scared?” He asked teasingly.
Virgil stared at him flatly. “Yes, actually. I am.”
“What about you, Princey-Poo?” Remus purred, walking over and snaking an arm around his brother’s shoulder. “Are you up for some rides with your dearest twin brother?”
“You are insufferable.” Roman sneered, crossing his arms, though his voice wavered a bit. After a few moments of contemplation, he answered Remus. “I’ll go if Morality does.”
They all looked to Patton, who wasn’t even paying attention and helping Logan put on his park wristband. He looked up at the mention of his name. “Hm?”
“Wanna go on a coaster?” Remus gestured with his hand to the ride behind them.
Patton hummed, thinking about it for a moment. “Sure! Sounds fun, kiddo!” He beamed, before returning his attention to Logan.
Roman paled, and an evil grin spread across Remus’ face.
Janus tilted his head. It could be fun, he wouldn’t know until he tried. Plus, he wanted to make memories! What better way to do that than riding his first rollercoaster with them?
A small finger tapped his arm, immediately halting his train of thought.
Janus looked down, finding a familiar boy staring at him. He perked up. Emile! He signed, turning fully towards the boy.
Emile gave him a wave. Hi, Deceit! What are you doing here?
The heroes need a break. So, we decided to come here. He told him, before pointing to his park bracelet.
Emile clapped his hands together. It’s my birthday today, so my mom and my dad took me here! He explained excitedly, Janus barely able to keep up with how fast his hands were moving. Emile paused, before his expression became more sheepish. Do you want to hang out with me?
Janus nodded eagerly. We would love to hang out with you! He turned towards the heroes, who were all watching the two of them. “This is Emile.” He explained, gesturing to the boy, who looked at all of them in wonder. “He’s a fan.”
Patton smiled, walking forward and kneeling down in front of Emile. Hello! How old are you? He signed, causing Janus’ eyes to widen. He wasn’t aware any of the heroes knew sign language.
Emile wasn’t either, based on how wide his eyes became. I’m thirteen as of today. He replied, hands shaking a bit from how nervous he was.
Patton’s smile grew. You’re very big now!
Emile nodded, grinning from ear to ear. I can finally play the 13+ games! My mom said I could go on my first rollercoaster when I turned thirteen, that’s why we’re here.
Patton chuckled. We were just about to go on one! Would you like to come with us?
Emile’s already awestruck expression turned into complete joy as he nodded so fast, Janus was a bit concerned that he would make himself nauseous.
“Emile!”
The heroes all turned toward the voice, and Janus spotted Douglas pushing his way through the crowd. “Emile, where did you go?!”
“Mr. Picani!” Janus shouted, gaining the reporter’s attention.
Douglas’ eyes widened at the sight of them, and he quickly rushed over. “Deceit!” He greeted once he neared, though his eyes didn’t leave his son, who turned to him and beamed.
“Wow, rude. We’re here too, y’know.” Roman huffed playfully, causing Douglas to flush.
“Sorry.” He quickly apologized, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s lovely to see you, heroes, thank you for finding him.” He glanced down at his son, a disapproving look on his face. I told you to stay close to me. He signed.
The heroes want me to go on a rollercoaster with them! Emile told his father, paying no mind to his mood.
Douglas glanced at the heroes in surprise, before smiling at his son. That’s nice of them. Have fun.
Emile’s smile dampened. You’re not coming?
Douglas shook his head. I have to call your mother and tell her you’re fine. He looked at the heroes. “Are you fine with watching him while I wait for his mom?”
“It’s no problem at all!” Patton chirped, standing up. “I love kids!” He ruffled Emile’s hair, as if to prove a point.
“He’s technically a teen now.” Virgil piped up, shrugging.
“Well, I love teens too!” Patton replied, grin widening. “How old were you when we met again, Logic?”
Logan fixed him with a bland look. “Fifteen, though I don’t see how that’s relevant.”
“Well, it’s proof that I love teens!” Patton chirped.
“You were only a year older than me?” Logan murmured quietly, more to himself than to Patton.
“Maybe don’t proclaim your love for teens to the whole world, Morality.” Remus cut in, crossing his arms. “It’s sure to get you some weird looks.”
Patton seemed confused at that, but Janus just snorted.
“Again, thank you so much.” Douglas told them, dialing the number on his phone. “Can you meet by the big puppy statue when you’re done? We can all grab something to eat.”
“No prob, Rob.” Roman flashed him a perfect smile. “You can count on us.”
“If I couldn’t, then who would I have?” Douglas smiled.
Janus kneeled down in front of Emile. Are you ready?
Emile nodded eagerly, already charging forward to enter the line.
The heroes (who were getting on the ride) quickly waved goodbye to Douglas, and chased after the young boy.
---
Long story short, Janus did not like the rollercoaster.
It was jerky, made him want to vomit, and he thought he might pass out a grand total of eight times. Quite an impressive feat for a three minute long ride.
Roman was currently puking his guts out in a nearby trash can, Patton rubbing his back soothingly while Emile watched in concern.
That torture device of a ride was probably the worst thing Janus had ever experienced, which was impressive since he grew up with literal criminals. He abhorred every second of it.
“So, what’d you think?” Remus asked him with a blinding smile on his face, bounding up to him like a puppy would to its owner.
“I loved it!” Janus lied through his teeth. A common theme with him, it seemed.
“I knew you would!” Remus told him, practically vibrating with excitement. “That was great, right?! You’re lucky I started us off with the most intense one in the park! Now, you’ll be fine on all the other ones!” His voice was so bright, it could rival the sun in Janus' opinion.
“Other ones?” He did his best to keep his voice even, despite the sudden terror that had struck him at the confirmation that what he just rode wasn’t the last thing he’d get on.
“You don’t have to get on other ones.” Remus reassured him, though he did seem slightly disappointed. “I can just go with ol’ Morality over there.” He gestured to the other hero with his thumb, Patton only giving them a quick glance.
Suddenly, Remus gasped and turned to Janus with stars in his eyes. “Deceit, have you ever had funnel cake?!”
Janus, a bit startled, just shook his head.
Roman, suddenly recovering from his nausea, shot his head up and stared at Janus with a fire in his eyes. “We have to get some!” He exclaimed, wiping his mouth with his sleeve. “I am finding myself to be quite famished all of a sudden!”
“Yeah, ‘cause you just regurgitated all of breakfast into that trash can.” Remus scoffed, rolling his eyes.
Roman pointedly ignored him. “I love funnel cake!” He declared passionately, one hand pressed to his chest and the other waving dramatically in the air. "It is a delicacy!"
Janus glanced at Emile, who seemed a bit lost. Do you like funnel cake? He asked the boy, whose eyes widened in excitement.
I love it! Emile signed. It's my second favorite thing, right after the League of Heroes!
Patton practically melted into a puddle right then and there, cooing at Emile with a smile on his face.
Remus and Roman glanced at each other, frowns on both of their faces as they silently came to an agreement that was lost to everyone else.
Janus ruffled Emile's hair, sighing fondly. You are very kind. He told the younger boy. Shall we go get some funnel cake, then?
Emile nodded, and that was all the incentive they needed to reunite with Virgil and Logan.
---
The rest of the day had been spent with Emile and his parents, playing games and riding rides that Janus enjoyed much more than the first one.
They drove home in Virgil's car.
As expected, Virgil drove with Logan sitting shotgun.
Remus had fallen asleep somewhere during the drive, his head resting on Patton's shoulder as the latter ran his fingers through the sleeping hero's hair, looking through something on his phone.
Janus was in a similar position, tired out of his mind. Unlike most of the heroes (Remus being the exception), he had decided to ride every single ride they came across. What better way to make memories?
He was curled into Roman's side, the taller man humming a song underneath his breath as he rubbed his hand up and down Janus' arm. It was relaxing.
Janus smiled softly. He was glad they had accomplished so much in one day. It was everything he could've hoped for and more. The heroes were funny like that, always exceeding his expectations.
He closed his eyes, relishing in Roman's warmth.
It was silent for about twenty minutes in that car.
"Patton?" Logan spoke up quietly, clearly trying not to wake Remus or Janus. It was unsuccessful, since Janus was instantly on edge by his tone alone. He kept his breathing soft and relaxed, however, curious as to where this conversation would go.
"Nothing." Patton murmured, his tone matching Logan's. "They haven't made a move all day."
Janus tensed imperceptibly. Oh, they were talking about the villains. Is that what Patton had been looking at on his phone? News of recent attacks?
"That's a relief." Roman mumbled.
"It makes sense." Virgil spoke up. "We would've heard something if they had attempted anything."
"We shouldn't relax just because they didn't show their faces today." Logan said sternly. "Who knows what they're planning? We need to keep our guard up."
"The reporters aren't a big fan of our little trip today." Patton informed them solemnly. "They say it's unbelievable, acting like nothing happened after the villain attack yesterday."
"Typical." Virgil scoffed.
"I can't say I blame them." Logan admitted. "It isn't exactly a good look for us."
"Janus wanted to go out today, so we went out today. It's as simple as that." Roman spat a bit defensively.
"It's as simple as that." Patton echoed in agreement.
Janus felt his heart warm a bit at that. They really cared, huh? So much so that they were willing to entertain his selfish desires. His greed.
He snuggled a bit closer to Roman, tuning out the rest of their conversation.
Six more days.
How could he fit a lifetime worth of moments into six days?
Well, he would try his fucking best.
