Chapter 1

Now, Janus didn't think himself to be a bad person.

He was a simple guy, just trying to make ends meet.

Was he the son of one of Sanders City's most notorious supervillains? Yes.

Was he planning on making his debut into the villain world in a month? Yes.

But really, he was a great guy! Funny, charming, witty, just every good quality, really.

Oh, he also had the power to shapeshift, did he not mention that?

Why could he shapeshift, you ask? He didn't have a clue. He was adopted, so he couldn't ask his mom.

Speaking of his mom.

Two sharp knocks sounded at his door.

"Come in." Janus called, idly bouncing a ball against his wall.

One of his mother's goons entered the room, trying to look tough. "Hey, kid. Your ma wants a word."

"Yeah?" Janus furrowed his brow. His mother wanted to talk? Usually, she didn't want anything to do with him. "I'll be right there."

He got up, quickly fixing his caramel colored hair, before heading towards his mother's meeting room.

---

“Miss Libelle,” Janus called, entering the room. “You called for me?”

Oh, yeah. He also wasn't supposed to call her 'mother.' Sucks, right?

“Knock next time, Janus.” She told him, glancing at him. “Yes, I did.”

Janus shifted nervously, glancing at the other people in the room.

They were all sat around a long table, Miss Libelle at the head. Tall, intimidating men and women were all sitting around the table, glancing at him menacingly.

“You haven’t publicly made your debut as one of us, have you?” Miss Libelle asked, regaining his attention. She picked up her wine glass, turning towards the window. “No one knows who you are.”

“I--Yes, that’s true.” Janus nodded slowly.

One of the men at the table, the one who was idly flipping around a playing card, chuckled. “I told you~”

“Shut up.” Hissed a woman with white hair in a black dress.

“Quiet.” Miss Libelle growled. “Janus, I have a mission for you.”

Janus brightened, but quickly composed himself. “Yes? What is it, Miss Libelle?”

“It’s quite simple, really.” Another one of the men, the one who was petting a parrot, hummed.

“A job fit for a child!” A woman in a large fur coat laughed. A few more people laughed as well, loud and uproarious.

Quiet!” She snapped, glaring at them all.

They all instantly fell silent, tension immediately falling over the room.

“My, my, now you’ve done it.” A man with a large scar drawled, picking at his teeth with the nail of his pinky.

“Let Beatrix tell the boy what he has to do, would you?” A woman with two large horns on her head huffed. “You’re all giving me a migraine.”

“Janus,” Miss Libelle said, “I need you to infiltrate the League of Heroes.”

Janus’s eyes widened, and he had to suppress the gasp that tried to force its way into existence. “Infiltrate them? Me?”

“You’re the only one here who they don’t know, kid!” A man with blue hair pointed out, grinning at him.

“B-But I haven’t completed my training yet!” Janus laughed awkwardly. “I’m not ready!”

Are you questioning me?!” The man with the blue hair roared, his blue hair turning an angry red. Janus flinched, watching as a small flame ignited itself in the man’s hair.

Miss Libelle snapped, and a bucket of water dumped itself on the man’s head.

“Thank you, Beatrix. I was getting a little heated.”

“Consider this a part of your training.” The man with the card chuckled, and Janus blinked when his shadow nodded in agreement.

“Ooh! Ooh!” A woman with black curly hair and a red dress spoke up. “Facilier, give the boy his fortune.” She hummed. “That’ll ease his nerves, surely.”

The man with the card chuckled. “You know me so well, Gothel.” He tossed the card in the air, and when it landed in his hand, it was a whole deck.

“How did you--?” Janus gasped.

“Show off.” The man with the scar rolled his eyes.

“Now, let’s see.” Facilier hummed, idly shuffling the deck at an impressive speed. He held the deck out to Janus. “Three cards, pick three cards.” He drawled, smirking at Janus. “Only three, though, kid.”

Janus picked three random cards from the deck. “Do I tell you what they are?”

“Sure, kid. Go ahead.” Facilier chuckled, leaning back in his chair.

“The three of diamonds, the ace of hearts, and the five of spades.” Janus told him.

“Wrong~” Facilier tsked, shaking his head.

“Wrong? What do you mean?” Janus furrowed his brow. Facilier held out his hand, and Janus gave him the cards back.

“On this card, I see…” He hummed, placing it down on the table. “A boy born into a family that didn’t want him.”

On the card there was a picture of Janus as a child, crying as two dark figures walked away from him.

“How did you…?” Janus murmured.

“Oh, poor thing!” Gothel cried sarcastically, causing the others to chuckle.

“Why didn’t they want him, you ask?” Facilier looked to his shadow, who seemed to be asking a silent question with its body language. “That’s easy, it’s because of the big, red, ugly birthmark that consumes half of his face.” He pointed at Janus, who shrunk subconsciously.

“Fortune favors the beautiful.” The man in red with the large muscles said, admiring the mirror in his hand.

“I didn’t need them anyways.” Janus growled, crossing his arms.

“Certainly not! After all, you were found just a couple days after being abandoned on the side of the road!” Facilier picked up the card, spun it, and pointed at the new picture on it. “By none other than Beatrix Libelle!”

The picture on it showed Miss Libelle holding the child Janus in her arms. He was looking up at her in wonder, but she was looking away.

“The Dragon Witch?! Taking in a kid?!” The man with a hook for a hand laughed, like it was the most hilarious thing he had ever heard.

Miss Libelle waved her hand, and the man with a hook stiffened. “Have fun talking with no tongue.” She sneered.

“Enough about the past, it’s boring me.” Facilier yawned, pulling out the second card.

This card showed a picture of current Janus. “You, boy, have a fire--a hunger to prove yourself!” He grinned. “You’re desperate to be accepted by us! You need it more than anything!”

Janus swallowed nervously, steeling himself. “Yes, that’s true.” He nodded.

“But,” Facilier chuckled. “You’re doubting your own abilities, and that’s what’s holding you back.”

“What is this, a therapy session?” The man with blue hair growled. “Get to the good part!”

“Okay, okay!” Facilier laughed. He flipped the last card.

It showed a picture of Janus, standing tall and proud.

The smile slipped right off of Facilier’s face, and he looked stunned for a moment. “Oh.”

“What is it?” Miss Libelle rose a brow.

Facilier’s smile easily slipped onto his face again. “I was just surprised, is all.” He chuckled. “Listen closely, boy.” Facilier’s shadow walked over to Janus, and pushed him closer to Facilier.

“You are going to get everything you want.” He told Janus, who’s eyes widened. “How you’re going to get it, though? Well, that’s all up to you, kid.” His expression hardened. “Don’t make the wrong decision.”

“Ooh, serious Facilier~” The man with the parrot cooed.

“Enough.” Miss Libelle snarled. “Janus, you will infiltrate the League of Heroes. Your main goal is to take down the main five.”

“They’re the biggest threat to us.” The woman with the horns growled.

“That stuck-up pretty boy thinks he’s better than me!” The muscular man in red exclaimed, looking away from the mirror to pound his fist on the table.

“That stupid nerd thinks he’s smarter than all of us.” The woman with white hair hissed.

“The one with the mustache mocks us.” The man with the scar growled.

“And don’t even get me started on the ditzy one, ugh!” The woman in the fur coat bemoaned. “He’s all rainbows and sunshine and puppies!”

“To have a spy is perhaps the only way we can catch them off guard, what with the dark one always on high alert. You should work to gain his trust first.” Miss Libelle told him.

“I’ll make you all proud.” Janus nodded. “Thank you for this opportunity.”

“Dismissed. You’ll leave tomorrow morning.” Miss Libelle said.

“Understood.” Janus nodded, before turning and leaving.

“He’s a good kid.” Facilier murmured, his tone gaining everyone’s attention. “Let’s hope he doesn’t make the wrong decision.”
