Chapter Thirty

Kyle's lack of response makes me utterly worried. It's been awhile since he's give me this much of a cold shoulder. Last time was when I refused to follow one of his orders - I'd decided on one thing and Kyle insisted that his way would be better. Needless to say, I was right, and Kyle ignored me for a couple of days.
But I guess, that's how friendships goes. Sometimes you bang heads and you disagree about certain things because you're ego gets a little too big, or your moral compass can't alter to see an alternative perspective. Damn moral compass, I wanted it to point one way, but it forced me another way. It was the only way I could go; Kyle's house.
I wanted to wait until Kyle returns to my house and apologises for his childish behaviour, but as Blake put it, my friendship is worth more than my pride. I couldn't change the fact I'm having this baby no more than he could.
After getting my head around this concept, I'm kind of excited to have my own little baby to raise. Sure, I could rehash on all the reasons I shouldn't, but I don't want my child growing up with the idea he or she was never wanted, that would be terrible. I'd always want them, no matter what they do in life.
It would just be nice if Kyle could at least be happy for me - put on a smile and say congratulations. However, I know it wouldn't mean much if he didn't mean it. I'd still feel rotten inside like now.
Regardless of what I wanted to happen in life, I'd long ago accepted that sometimes what we want doesn't count for much. At some point when you're traveling down that road of life, you grow up and realise the world stops revolving around you, or perhaps you just realise it never has.
London is only beginning to learn that the world revolves around her, and I'm certainly not looking forwards to it. It's going to be many years before she manages to crack out of that mindset, unfortunately.
My stomach knots uncomfortable from the situation, but here I stand in front of the door I'm completely afraid of. I'm not sure what I'm more scared of; my chat with Kyle, or dealing with Ben answering the door.
I hope he doesn't because I don't want to be turned away. I get that he doesn't want me around Kyle at the moment, but soon enough, he has to drop that act and realise Kyle isn't the victim anymore than I am.
Taking two deep breaths, I knock on the solid wooden door and wait. My breath comes out shakily and my heart rattles within my ribcage, but I stay strong and determined. I'd talk to Kyle whether Ben likes it or not. I don't care if I need to tear down Kyle's door and force him to listen to me . . . I'm going to sort out this mess.
There's a slight shuffling and rattling sound before the door creaks on its hinges. As it opens wide, I see the tall form of Ben standing before me in a tight pair of bright red underwear.
My cheeks turn pink with embarrassment while Ben stands a little taller, obviously proud of his underwear? I don't get it. Unless . . . I wonder if he's always like this around male company? His budding friendship and guard like dominance over Kyle is rather questionable, in addition to the spin the bottle game we played earlier.
Though, maybe I am wrong, and maybe I'm just madly right. I've probably been worrying about Tori too much and not enough about Ben.
"Hi, Ben." I awkwardly smile, not sure what else to add. "How are you?"
"Hey, Ava," he responds, the joy and enthusiasm suddenly sucked from his appearance. Maybe he was expecting someone else at the door? Too bad, he's got me to deal with now.
"Um, is Kyle home?" I question.
"Yeah, sure." He nods his head.
"Is there a chance I can see him?" I feel like a total moron asking, but it's not like Ben is making it any easier to see Kyle. He's not exactly laying out a red carpet and offering me refreshments. I'm not complaining, but it would be nice.
"I can show you to his bedroom." He slowly nods his head.
Ben opens the door wider and invites me inside. We walk down the narrow cream passageway until we get about midway. Ben knocks on a wooden door and waits for a response. Just like before, I hear the sound of someone groaning, then a shuffle of sheets before a coherence sentence is strung into the air.
"What do you want, man?" yells Kyle.
"You've got a visitor," responds Ben.
The use of the word visitor instead of friend, or even Ava has me reeling with annoyance. Ben certainly doesn't want me here, that's obvious enough. He makes me feel like I'm about to visit an inmate rather than my friend.
"Who?" the high pitch of his voice shows me he's curious.
"Ava."
"Tell her to go away." Ben goes to place a hand on my back to guide me out of the house, but I don't have it. I didn't travel all this way for Kyle to brush me off. I won't give Ben the satisfaction of pushing me out the doorway either.
Sure, I get it, he wants to protect Kyle from me and getting hurt, but he's just avoiding the inevitable. Getting hurt is just a casualty of life, sometimes you can't avoid it no matter how much you try to escape.
Grabbing at the handles, I push the door open and barge into the room. Kyle hides under his blanket like a small cowering child, while Ben stands to the side and observes the situation. I'm surprised it takes him this long to intervene.
"Kyle?" questions Ben.
"You're acting like a big baby, Kyle." I place my hands on my hips and tap my foot on the ground.
"Go away, Ava."
"If your mother was here, she'd be dragging your sorry ass out of bed," I comment.
I grab the cover and tug as hard as I can. Kyle's grip is strong, but I'm persistent. When he lets go of the blanket, I pull it down enough so that he can't hide under it. I look over my shoulder and notice Ben is gone before I continue on.
As I glance back at Kyle, I see his arms folded over his chest. He's pouting, the kind of pout he does when you force him into something he doesn't wanna do. Typical Kyle. I can't be angry because I'm the exact same too.
I walk around the bed and sit beside him. I take the blanket and cuddle underneath it for warmth. Kyle grabs the corner and covers himself up as well.
"So, should I start with the kiss or the baby?" I ask, jumping right into the talk.
"What about the kiss?" he asks.
"Ben thinks that . . . you know?" I look at the blanket and frown. I don't know how to approach this topic at all. I had it all planned out in my head before, but now that I'm sitting here, I don't know where my head's at.
"He's wrong, it was just a kiss and nothing more. We're friends and you're having a baby with Blake," he explains.
"But?" I feel like there's a but coming up somewhere.
"There's nothing else to say, Ava. You're having a baby."
"You say that a lot," I comment.
"Because it's the truth."
"I know, okay?" I say. "I can't change the fact that I'm pregnant no more than you can. You don't have to be happy about this, but I would like you to be," I explain.
"I'm sorry, Ava." He wraps his arm around my neck and tugs me to his side. I rest my head against his chest and wait for him to continue. "One day I'll be happy for you, but right now, I can't. You're already raising someone else's child, and now you're about to have one of your own. Ava, you're still a child yourself."
Jerking away from his grip, I roll my eyes and frown. Ugh, this is the speech I expect my parents to give me, not Kyle.
"Why are you doing this, Kyle?" I ask. "Why can't you just say you're happy for me?"
"Because I wouldn't mean it, and you'd be more upset if I lied about it."
"You're the only one that isn't happy," I point out.
"What have your parents said about the baby?"
"Uh."
"You haven't told them yet?" Kyle almost yells. "Why haven't you told them?"
"I'm getting around to it, okay?" I reply. "It's taking some time since my Dad's working. We're going to tell them this weekend." Kyle physically relaxes, but my senses are still on edge. I have a bad feeling in my stomach and I don't think it has anything to do with this baby.
"Make sure you tell them, and make sure Blake sticks by you. I don't want to see you alone and raising this baby by yourself," adds Kyle.
The thought of Blake's leaving bewilders me. Blake would never leave, just look at how well he managed with London. After Tori left, he could have left London to his parents or sourced out other options like adoption, or even handed her over to Tori's parents, but that didn't happen.
This didn't happen because at the end of the day, Blake doesn't run away, so Kyle shouldn't worry about that.
"You don't have to worry about it, Kyle. This baby and I are going to be fine and Blake will take care of us."
"At any moment he doesn't –"
"But he will." I laugh.
Kyle frowns, then starts talking again. "At any moment he doesn't take care of you, I will." The thought of my best friend being there is comforting. I know Blake will be there, but there's always moments when I'll just need Kyle, my best friend.
I hear footsteps, then a gasp. I look up, expecting to see Ben, but I'm surprised when I find a girl standing in the doorway. As I keep looking, I notice that isn't not just any girl, but Charlotte, the girl from the parenting group.
"You're not secretly pregnant with him, are you?" The thought of being pregnant to Kyle makes me sick. No, kissing was bad enough . . . but having sex with him? No, I could never go there with Kyle.
"No, Blake's the father," I say. "Kyle's my best friend, actually, well, more like a brother. We were just having a disagreement about it, that's all."
"Oh."
"But, we're somewhat good now, so." I awkwardly get out of Kyle's bed and straighten out of my clothes. "So I should, ugh, get going."
Kyle gets out of bed so that I can give him a half awkward hug. I say a brief goodbye and let myself out. The door to Kyle's bedroom closes and I hear a squeal. I don't want to know what they're doing and I feel utterly sick that I just sat on his bed . . . I bet he doesn't wash those bed sheets either.
I see Blake standing by the door, a weird look on his face.
"Does that happen a lot?" I point over my shoulder, indicating what's happening in Kyle's bedroom.
"Yes, but at least he's consistent with the girl he's with," comments Ben. "Charlotte makes breakfast in the morning and cleans the house a little." Knowing more about Kyle's relationship is as bad as I expect. Its fine that he wants to be with other people, I just don't wanna hear about it.
"I'm going to go, so bye." I awkwardly wave.
"Tell Blake I say, hi." He nods his head.
"Sure." I walk out of the house and get into the car. Before I drive off, I quickly send Blake a message about the conversation I had with Kyle. It's not the outcome I'm hoping for – the one where Kyle is so excited he starts jumping up and down with joy – but I guess I'll take this one.
Blake is right, and I hate admitting that. I do feel less stressed out now, and once I get this dinner over and down with, it'll be even better.
Sometimes you have to stop thinking about yourself and think about someone else. However, there's nothing too wrong about taking moments to yourself, or putting yourself first. You just have to figure out which one is more important – you or your best friend.
This time, I chose my best friend because sometimes small grudges and arguments aren't worth losing something so special. No matter how much I fight with Kyle, nothing is worth throwing our friendship away.

What is your most awkward situation (can be about you or someone else!)
