Chapter 16 - Mr. Brown.

                       JOHN BROWN.

He walked out of the shower and into an empty house yet again. It had been the norm for the past four days. Amber was never around and seemed to walk in on him sleeping and sneak out before light.

This was a less busy day. A few appointments here and there and a big meeting with a few Japanese investors. Coming to America was the right call and he knew he was in debt to Mace for bringing him.

As he put on his antique silver watch which was be quitted to him by his grandfather, he spied Amber's sife of the closet. The wooden red jewellery box was still intact. Then what had she broken? He had found a few splinters on the floor.

He knew Amber to be less than candid but he did trust she would tell him when major things were happening. The door bell chimed and he looked at the monitor. It displayed to figures at the door. Both unknown to him.

He opened the door a bit cautiously. The one who immediately met his eye's gaze was a tall, lanky asian man. He had a serious look on his face. His eyebrows pushed together.

Behind his urgent form was that of a wind blown woman. At her feet, a dog struggled to come to John but it was on a short leashe. The asian man held up an FBI badge to John's face.

"Agent Lee Norton. We need to talk."

John let them in and led them to his study. He didn't know what was going on but he had an inkling it had to be nothing good. His mind began to overheat. Hadn't he filed his taxes properly. God blast the accounting department.

He walked into the room with tea for his guests. Clearly, his morning errands would have to wait.

"So, how may I help you?" he bassed.

The agent took a very calculated sip of his tea. The man was like nothing John had seen. He seemed as relaxed as can be yet held a suffocating intensity. Something told John that this wasn't exactly an agent in the Finance department.

"This is about your wife, Amber." Lee finally said. The woman shifted uncomfortably, her gaze never leaving the floor.

"What about her?"

"This is her sister."

"What?" John nearly chocked on his great British tea.

Amber told him that she had no family. She even took him to the group home where she grew up.

"Didn't you know she had a sister?" Lee's eyebrows pushed in focus.

"Impossible! She told me she was an only child."

"Well this is her blood sister. Her name is Becky Evans."

The woman finally looked up at him. Her eyes were the same forest green as Amber's. They even had similar facial features. The agent continued. Unaware of the bomb he was about to drop.

"I believe you knew about your wife's work with the FBI." John gave a blank stare. His life was unraveling like a bad yarn sweater. The warmth, all a temporary farce. Little did he know that this was just the beginning. "On the William Heard case."

"The serial killer?" he yelped without meanings to. The agent remained as still and unmoved as a mountain.

"She is the psychologist working directly with him."

The words were like daggers. A truth his mind just couldn't comprehend. He looked between the two guests. The agent's mouth moved but nothing was what he wanted to hear.

"Of course not! Are you bloody mad? My wife would do no such thing. Hunting for serial killers!" he suddenly burst out. Standing quickly upon his feet.

"The only being hunted for is the truth, where the victims are being held. The maniac is in the asylum."

Upon Lee's words, John began to piece it all together. The visit from a Dr. Shepherd from the asylum, Amber's elusiveness and... her ear. He rested his arms on the leather chair's back. His head fell.

"So he did that to her?" he whispered.

"Did what?"

"Her ear!" he shouted.

His acrid anger resonating across the walls. The woman cowered further into her chair and the golden dog began to bark at him. Agent Lee stood up.

"I'll need you to calm down sir."

John punched the chair. His anger turning to confusion, to betrayal. Why now?

"So what happened? Is she...?"

"No," Lee injected. "She's fine. Yesterday, someone attempted to attack Miss. Evans. I believe he's trying to scare your wife off his trail. I've been looking for Amber but I can't trace her."

"What are you saying to me?" he was seething.

"I need Miss. Evans to stay with you here. A few agents will stay nearby round the clock. If you hear from Amber, let me know. Is that clear?"

"Well..."

"Thank you for your cooperation." the agent cut him off.

He moved to the woman and rested one hand on her shoulder. The other hand was lifted to his lips as he spoke into it.

"Get in position. The fowls are in the nest."

With that, he looked out the window and walked out. Without so much as a look back, he said.

"Don't leave the premesis Mr. Brown."

"What? I have things to do!..."

"I know you have nothing carreer threatening coming up. Just follow my instructions. My contact had been added to both your phones."

"What?" John looked at his phone. "How?..."

"If you do not pick," Lee stopped to turn, having reached the front door. "I'll assume you're in trouble and  have agents on you."

The door slammed and that was the end of the ordeal. John fell onto the wall, staring at his apparent sister in law. Where was Amber?
