Chapter 9: Claire

I just realized that it's almost impossible to read the caption on the cover, especially on a phone, so just in case any of you wanted to know, it says-

"The Earth is dead, but hope is not."

Also, the awesome fun1029384756 has started writing a fanfiction of the Books of Lessaenes! I know, this is amazing! It's called Ellis the Glitch, if any of you would like to read it :)

At 7:57 A.M on the morning of Wednesday, November eleventh, 2015, the Glitches of WGO gathered in front of Government Building B for the very last assembly we would ever have in our own headquarters.

"Okay, each division gets a van, go ahead and get in. Division leaders drive. Hurry up, we don't have any time to spare!" Amanda yelled, pointing to five maroon vans lined up in the parking lot.

I scanned the area with my eyes, and to my relief, I saw Justin walking up to where we stood. He hadn't forgotten.

"What are you doing here?" Amanda asked when she saw him.

"Um...just saying goodbye and good luck to Claire," he quickly improvised.

"Alright, but be quick about it!"

"Hey, what should I-"

"Go behind that tree and put these on!" I said gruffly, shoving a dark black coat, sunglasses, and a scarf in his arms. "Meet me behind the Sloppie van when you're finished!"

As Justin obediently disappeared behind the large oak, I grabbed Kelly's hand and we ran to the last van in the row. Kelly took a seat in the back and motioned for me to sit next to her, but I declined.

"I forgot something, I'll be back," I whispered, before shutting the door and walking over to the trunk, where Justin waited for me.

Realizing I didn't have the keys, I quickly Coded the trunk open.

"Get in," I commanded, breathing quickly with nervousness.

"I'm gonna feel like I'm being kidnapped," Justin grumbled.

"Relax, you'll be fine," I rolled my eyes.

As Justin climbed into the trunk, I felt the van begin to vibrate as Tim started the engine. We didn't have much time. I slammed the trunk shut and Coded a few air holes in it before running around the side of the van and sliding in just as it went into motion.

"Whoa, you almost missed it!" Kelly exclaimed as I settled in my seat beside her.

"But I didn't," I grinned as we drove over several empty fields before reaching what resembled a walled city.

Me: What's that???

I quickly CT'd Amanda.

Amanda Lynne Myers: Reg quarter 3...I wasn't lying when I said there's more to WGO than just HQ. I'm gonna miss this place, I was like the queen of my own little world...

My eyes widened with awe as we passed Reg quarter 3, and I looked inside through the gate to see dozens of regs milling around. They waved excitedly when they saw us, and Kelly waved back.

"We're approaching the invisibility shield," Tim warned. "This may be slightly uncomfortable."

I saw the familiar barrier spread out a few yards in front of us, separating us from the San Francisco airport. I heard a hissing noise and was thrown back into my seat as we drove through the shield, following the Speedie van.

Looking around as we stepped out, I realized why everything looked so foreign. It had been a year since I had seen normal people living normal lives; kind of hard to believe. Then, I realized that this meant that my birthday must've passed sometime while I was a WGO! I was sixteen! I couldn't believe Glitch life had made me so oblivious...

As we exited the van in front of the airport, I ran around the vehicle, Coded the trunk open, and helped Justin out. Luckily, no one noticed the dozens of tiny air holes.

"Follow us from a safe distance," I instructed him before walking forward to join the rest of the Glitches who were beginning to gather in a circle by the entrance.

"Alright, it's 8:45, and our flight to Fort Yukon Airport in Alaska departs at 10:00, so we have plenty of time. There's no hurry," Amanda told us, yelling over the wind. "Here's your tickets!" She pulled a stack of boarding passes out of her purse.

"Aren't you supposed to print those inside the airport?" Iveya raised an eyebrow.

"Glitches can get around the rules," Amanda grinned.

When it was my turn, I sifted through the stack and found mine. Looking at the rest, I realized that Government and the Codies got business class while the rest of us were stuck in the coach. Of course.

As we entered the airport, I felt my heart throbbing in my chest. Every time someone looked our way, I felt like they were going to start pointing and yelling. I could never get used to doing illegal things like boarding a flight without paying, even if I was a Glitch and knew I couldn't possibly be caught.

I looked behind me periodically to make sure Justin was still following us in between conversations with Kelly.

"What do you think the outside world is like?" Kelly asked cheerfully.

A wasteland

"I don't know," I shrugged. "I guess we'll find out."

"What if it's awesome, and futuristic, and cool!" Kelly gasped. "I can almost see it...glass skyscrapers, hovercrafts, moon colonies...and most importantly, no one is stuck being a Sloppie!"

I felt my heart being ripped in two as I looked into her big, hopeful eyes. I wanted to tell her so badly to save her from ultimate disappointment, but I didn't want to break my promise to Amanda to not reveal anything to the other Glitches until she told me it was time.

"Maybe it is...who knows?" I smiled softly. I felt terrible having to get her hopes up.

I hate you, Queen Saralee, I really, really hate you.
