XXXI
Gini ended the call with Bruce then called her sister. She was married now and didn't want to be owing Bruce money for the laptop he had gotten for the kids. Mama agreed to pay him with some of the money she had at home and they talked about her bringing the kids to Juwon's house the following day.
Gini couldn't tell Juwon what exactly the surprise was but she was sure if he saw the boys, he'd understand. They were carbon copies of him anyway, the only physical attribute they had gotten from her gene pool was her height. Taye and Idowu were already 5"5 and Kenny was catching up quickly also.
Gini knew Juwon would understand why she didn't tell him immediately after they got together. She needed to be sure about him and now that she was, he could meet their kids. She could have long talks with him about how she survived ten years being mother to three hyperactive kids.
Gini went back to the bedroom when the balcony got colder. She sat on the bed then went downstairs to find Juwon. They didn't have the expected wedding night last night and they could make up for it tonight. She didn't find him in the living room nor the kitchen when she went looking. She called his name but got no answer. Gini hoped he didn't go out to buy her more clothes. She had brought enough to wear and didn't need anymore. She went back into the room and entered the bathroom singing and dancing.
Gini got dressed and jumped on the bed. Something hit the floor as the bed rocked and she reached for the item. She saw a book and opened the first page, it seemed like Juwon's thought. He never told her he owned a diary, she was definitely going to tease him later. She read the first line and frowned at how angry the tone was, even the writing was different. She read how Juwon angrily wrote about his struggle selling stuff in traffic. When she got to the middle of the first page, he mentioned getting a revenge against her and Big Fred.
"What did I do?" she asked aloud.
She'd left town unexpectedly but that didn't warrant getting revenge. She continued the book and read a very detailed story on how she and Big Fred had planned to steal his father's land. Gini didn't know what she was reading anymore but she couldn't stop herself. She continued reading and found out about his scar. Why would her dad cut him? Everything written so far seemed like what her dad would do but he got it wrong when he kept repeating how she'd planned it all. They had only been fourteen, what fourteen-year-old girl had the time to plan out a rape accusation?
Gini bit her lips when she read how he got his revenge against her dad. He went back to town just to ruin her dad. What sort of person would do that? Gini was almost on the fifteenth page when she got to the part where he saw her back in town on the day of her father's funeral. He had thought she went abroad after supposedly ruining his life. She shut the book after reading how he planned on getting his revenge on her next. The tone of the diary was so angry and bitter that she got goosebumps thinking about that being the Juwon she had come to know. How had he hated her with so much conviction yet smiled in her face all through her stay in town? What could make anyone go through all that trouble?
Big Fred. Argh, he had someone managed to ruin her life even in death. Why would he keep going with the narrative that she was raped when she'd told him repeatedly that she wasn't? She'd ran away so he wouldn't spread the lies and he'd found another way to do just that. And he had too much property to go to all that trouble just to buy Juwon's dad's land. It was all so greedy and conniving. He had never mentioned getting more properties but she knew he wanted more and more of everything. To take one that already belonged to someone else though, it was just beyond her.
Gini felt numb. She was just blank. Her dad had done what he knew how to do best. He had ruined everything, first with her mother, her lost sister, Mama, him and now Juwon. She felt bad for the teenage Juwon. He had lost his alcoholic father, became an alcoholic himself, struggled endlessly to make something out of nothing. He finally got all the money in the world and the one thing he thought about was how to get revenge. It was so psychopathic yet pitiful.
She remembered asking him when he got back to town and he'd given her a sketchy detail. She even asked him if going to the mall that took her father out of business wasn't betraying her dad's memory. She recalled he had said no, how ironic. Her dad had died from heart attack from all the debt he amassed and Juwon had been rejoicing all the while. He had orchestrated the perfect revenge. He hit Big Fred's gigantic ego and took him down in the most ingenious way possible.
Gini wrapped her arms around her knees and rocked on the bed. How did he plan it so well? He had even married her to complete his revenge. What kind of person did that? He was so vicious. Gini started packing her things and stopped mid way. There was no where to go. Her sister was bringing the kids the following day, she had even told her to tell the kids that they were meeting their dad. She was also married now, her certificate was literally on the table downstairs. She couldn't just walk out, she was terribly stuck.
Gini felt like she was living someone else's life. Life couldn't screw her over again, no. It was just too much bad luck for one person. She had been stuck with a terrible father and now a psychopathic husband. It just couldn't be. She sat back in bed. She couldn't shed tears. She was too numb for that at the moment. She looked up when she saw the door open and a sweaty Juwon walked in and looked at her.
"Packing?" he asked in a cynical tone. "You're not thinking of running to Bruce, are you?" He leaned against the wall to complete his creepy persona.
Gini ignored him and carried the open luggage on the bed to a corner.
"Good decision," he continued. "I know you had all this planned, but I'm sorry to tell you it's not going to end how you envisioned."
"How's that?" she asked.
"Well, you're not running off with Bruce because you're married to me. As for the money you think you'll get from me, I'm not giving you a dime. I know you didn't sign a prenuptial agreement but my lawyers won't let you get a dime from me."
"Okay."
"I'm glad we're both on the same page. Anyway, you're stuck with me whether you like it or not. You'll be a good wife and I'll be a good husband even though you don't deserve it."
"You're insane if you think I'm going to be a good wife to you."
"Gini, you put me through hell. I lost my dad because you and your greedy father wanted to have the whole town. Look at my face, that's what your dad did because you lied that I raped you."
Gini looked at him and shook her head. How could he keep thinking she did all that?
"You can call Bruce back to tell him you're not sending any money."
Gini started laughing as she finally realized what made him snap. He had heard her call with Bruce and assumed that the money she was going to get him was his. Gini laughed again when Juwon looked at her like she'd lost her mind. She kept laughing as he walked out of the room then started crying. She loved the man with her whole heart and he thought she'd set him up so her father could steal his land. As if that wasn't far fetched enough, he thought she was running off with Bruce after milking him for money. Who did he think she was? A gold digger?
Her father had created the whole narrative and Juwon had foolishly gone with it. Maybe, Juwon created the narrative and her father cosigned it. Either ways, her father did this. No, she did it when she invited Juwon to her bedroom.
Gini returned to the balcony and sat on the cold floor. Juwon didn't return to the room that night while Gini stayed outside just staring at nothing. She remained in a position for hours and returned to the bedroom as the day broke. She got under the duvet and held her tears as her heart ached.
