Chapter 8 : Normal

They get good at pretending. That's the worst part. Lunch resumes at the usual table by the windows. After-school walks still happen. Group chats still buzz, though messages are shorter now, safer. On the outside, it looks like the friend group survived the fracture. On the inside, everything is adjusted by millimeters.

Ellie sits beside Soo-ah, always. Dae-hyun across from them. Seojoon at the far end, legs stretched out, phone in hand like he doesn't care who's near him.

No one mentions detention. No one mentions the space. They talk about tests. About teachers. About nothing important.

Ellie laughs when she's supposed to. She nods at the right moments. Her composure is flawless, so flawless it feels rehearsed. Seojoon watches her carefully.

Dae-hyun hates this version of things. It feels like balancing glass. Every joke might shatter something. Every silence might mean someone's finally had enough.

"You guys want to study together later?" he asks one afternoon, forcing brightness into his voice.

Soo-ah smiles. "Sure."

Ellie hesitates, just long enough for Seojoon to notice.

"I can't stay late," Ellie says smoothly. "Family thing."

It's not a lie. It's also not the whole truth. Seojoon nods like it doesn't matter.

Days pass like this. Almost normal. Seojoon stops trying to talk to Ellie. Not because he doesn't want to, because he's learned how thoroughly she can erase someone. He jokes with Dae-hyun. Trades sarcasm with Soo-ah. Pretends the hollow feeling in his chest is just boredom. Ellie watches him laugh and feels... nothing. That's what she tells herself.

On a regular, normal Thursday, the façade started to crack. It's raining again, light, unremarkable, barely enough to justify umbrellas. They're leaving school together, crowding under the awning near the gates while Soo-ah digs through her bag.

"I swear I had it," Soo-ah mutters. "I literally just"

Her papers slip from her hands. They scatter across the wet pavement. Dae-hyun crouches immediately. "I've got it." Seojoon moves too, faster than he realizes.

Ellie doesn't. She stands there, watching, arms folded, rain tapping softly against her sleeve. One sheet slides farther than the rest, skidding toward a shallow puddle. Seojoon reaches for it, misses. Without thinking, Ellie steps forward. She catches the page before it hits the water. It's nothing. A reflex. A habit. Muscle memory from a lifetime of being responsible. She straightens, holding the paper carefully by the corner so it doesn't crease.

Seojoon looks up. Their eyes meet. Just for a second. The world narrows to that moment, rain, paper, breath caught between them. Ellie hesitates. This is where she usually hands things to Soo-ah. Or Dae-hyun. Anywhere but him. Instead, she extends the page toward Seojoon. "Here," she says. Her voice is neutral. Calm. Controlled. But it's the first word she's spoken directly to him in weeks.

Seojoon freezes."Thanks," he says quietly, taking it.

Their fingers don't touch. Still, something passes between them, acknowledgment. Not forgiveness. Not peace. Just... recognition.

Ellie steps back immediately, like she's crossed an invisible line. She turns to Soo-ah.

"Let's go." And that's it.
