Contemplative Shift

Two mountains met in crash and thunder
One the Greatest,
One the Least.

Greatest growled
“Bow down!  Fold under! “

Least cried out,
“I'll not go fast! “

Greatest offered sweet,  green valleys
Crystal rivers, ripened groves.

Least  settled,
Lazy,  into comfort,
Gave the deer and owl their homes.

Slowly, slowly eons passed by.
Higher,  higher Greatest climbed.

Sleepy Least folded under, like
Melting butter tends to slide.

Moon looked down and wondered softly
“Now where has young Least gone to live? “

“I gave her home!”  the Greatest roared,
“She was worthless -  without gift!
Her only purpose was to feed me
Be my bedrock…serve as grist! “

Moon whispered as he wandered
Cross the sky,  and into night.
“What a shame we've lost the Least…

She reflected pretty light.”
