Write, write, and write some more

"Write, write, and write some more."- deathofcool

Every one has room for improvement. I don't care who you are and how good you think you are.  But few people want to. Many people are comfortable with their writing ability.  Most of you are not going to go back to school and get into some writing program to learn from some experts. Most of you are not in a position to do that. You don't have the time, money, or sometimes, even the desire.

But in writing that is okay. Writing is one of those things that people can be good at without professional training. Writing well takes more than just knowing where the period and the comma belong. It takes talent and passion. It takes a deep desire to express.

To produce a good piece of writing you need to be able to do two things. You need to be able to write well, and you need to be able to come up with a good story. Great writing can be boring if the story can't hold your interest. But if you combine the two you can make some real magic.

Ernest Hemingway is credited in saying "All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know." I find that is somewhat true. I was writing a story once and when looking it over I saw that I wrote a sentence that I really loved. It was a not just a good sentence. It was, in my opinion, a beautifully written true sentence. So good, I thought, that I felt that everything around it was ugly. I removed the 2,000 words before it and the 1,500 words after it and have yet to find replacement words. I'll get back to it someday.

In all my thoughts and research about writing I find that the biggest truth for writers lies in that quote I started this piece with. Wattpad writer deathofcool said it best when she wrote "write, write, and write some more".  I would add that if you are not writing then read. Read, read, and read some more. Get comfortable with the way words look and feel on paper. Come to the understanding that you can do that. You can write like that. You just have to do it. Not sit and think about it. Do it. In the end they are just words, and you tell them what to do.

If you have trouble with the rules you will learn them subconsciously while you read. Very few professional writers can diagram a sentence. Don't worry about things like that. Just write. There will be time and help for corrections.

Just a couple of days ago I picked up the book "A River Runs Through It". A gorgeous piece of writing. The author wrote it when he was in his 70's and it became a classic. There is time to become a writer. That genius took forever. Don't wait that long. Write right now. Write more. Write again.
