Chasing Five
She ran on the field chasing a little boy who brought a brown fur bunny in his arms. “Give me back my little bunny.”
This field was where they used to play together. It’s filled with dandelion and the sun shone bright every morning. The little girl tripped on a small stone and yelled. “Al!” he stopped when I called him. The little boy rushed back to her.
“Are you okay little sis?” he put the bunny on her side. “Here have some fluffy bunny to cheer you up.”
Her lips formed a big smile. It’s her first pet ever and she loved the bunny so much. After checking on small wound on her knees, he helped her up. They continued playing some more on the field until they felt tired but as kids, they always had the energy to play all day.
Waking up from a dream Freya scream. “I thought I was dying!” she finds Alessandro sitting at the end of my bed. He laughs at her confusion.
“You gave me a nice vision of when we were kids, that’s like a vision before someone dying, a flashback kind of thing.” She pulls herself back under the blanket.
Alessandro pulls the blanket and throws it on the floor. “Get up! You need to come with me to Powell. I need something from our uncle for the hunting.”
She gets up fast. “We have an uncle who’s still alive?”
“Not exactly the Milano descendant. Just get ready. I’ll explain on the way.” He gets up from the bed and pats her cheeks. He runs his fingers through his rather long wavy black hair. The tip of his hair touches his neck. Being the same descendant as Freya, he also has those same striking features, mainly fiery eyes and smile but his smile is softer than her cheeky smile.
She tilts her head. “For worth it’s worth, you were adorable as a little boy.” She adds. “Not as adorable as –“ cutting her words, a knife thrown at her and she uses her pillow as defense. She can hear Alessandro laughing while walking out of the door. “This is my favorite pillow.”

The sound of something breaking makes Alessandro turns his head on his sister who seems so busy with whatever she does to avoid boredom. He glares at her but she just grins. “What did you do? We are barely an hour on the road and you’ve managed to break something on my truck. There’d be nothing left of this truck by the time we get home tomorrow.”
“I’m betting it won’t take that much longer. Today can be the day your old truck gone, Alessandro.” She shows what’s on her hand, the handle used to slide the window up and down. “This is why I told you we’d better go with my car.”
Alessandro lets out a long sigh. “People know me as Alexander now. You need to get used to that. At least on public.”
Freya bursts into laugh. “Ran out of ideas of new names huh? I can just call you Al again like when we were kids.” She nudges his arm. “Right, Al? You’re Al I have.”
“I love you Frey!” he yells at her after being silent with all her teases. That makes her laugh. Alessandro looks at her laughing and laughs too.
Freya tries to makes herself comfortable on her seat. She just can’t sit still and do nothing and stay quiet. She lifts her foot and puts it on the seat. “You know I won’t change my name anymore now. If I’m going to come clean, all those people chasing after me know who to look for.” She winks teasingly as if it’s not a serious matter.
“You won’t have to face it alone.” Alessandro turns his head to look at her for a while then back to the wheel.
Freya pats his shoulder. “I know. You always, always have my back, my front, basically every side of me. You don’t even give a chance for anyone else to swoop in your place beside me.”
“The downside of being your brother.” He says in mumble. She pretends laughing like it’s funny though she knows he’s indeed just kidding with her.
From far away Freya can see a fast food restaurant. She taps Alessandro’s arm pretty hard that one can hear the tapping. “Let’s stop for food. I’m hungry.”
“You’re a vampire.” He shakes his head.
Freya pulls her hand off his arm onto her lap. “Okay, you’re right. We don’t need that. When the sun goes down, let’s stop for blood.”
Right at that second their truck passes the diner, Alessandro turns the wheel in a sudden, throwing Freya who’s enjoying herself to the front but she has quick reflexes. Her hand hits the dashboard.
“Next time we go on road trip. I drive.” Freya says after Alessandro finds a parking spot for his truck. “I’ll show you how to pull a real driving stunt.”
Alessandro unclasps his seatbelt. “I miss this, you know, on the road with you. Remember there were times when we spent two decades road tripping, catching bad guys as we went.”
“I miss spending quality times with you too brother.”
-----
They eventually arrive at their destination town. Freya has managed to behave in her seat. She blasts the radio to fill in the boredom. Alessandro isn’t big talker like Freya. His responses mostly put her to sleep instead.
“When was the last time you take blood?” she stops halfway taking blood bag from the backpack in the back seat. They are coming to the quietest, most natural spot probably in the town. There are many trees on the side of the road, big and tall trees that ones can barely see the top. Freya pops out her head of the window and looks up with amazement. She loves the nature. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath.
“This is one of the things I love about the Milano. We always go back to nature.” She laughs. “How do we all find the most natural spot in every town we settle in? That’s the wonder we do right.”
“He’s not exactly Milano. He’s the Lorenzo with a little part of Milano but he’s the Lorenzo.”
Freya pulls herself back in the car. “Our mother descendant? Why did I never heard of them before?“
“No one does. It has –“
Freya interrupts. “But you do know.”
Alessandro shakes his head and sighs. “It has been a secret between the families, the Lorenzo and the Milano. Ever since the Milano legacy fell apart with the attack and us turning, the Lorenzo is kind of taking over what’s left of our legacy as keepers.”
“I am a family, Al. I am Milano. I deserved to know.” Freya’s tone is getting higher. She certainly doesn’t sound fine about it.
Alessandro looks at her for a second. “Frey, you had been out of track for so long. We couldn’t risk telling you when you were basically eating with the enemies. What’s matter now is that I told you.”
“You had been lying to me!” Freya snatched the wheel. She’s too strong for Alessandro to fight. She flips the wheel with force to the side to cause the truck flipping and thrown till they hit a tree.
They are badly injured inside the truck, upside down. When Alessandro glares at her, Freya just smirks. They try to get out of the truck before it blows up. Alessandro groans in pain. Freya helps him to get out and they jump away as the truck blows up.
“You need to stop that childish attitude.” Alessandro murmurs while dusting his messy clothes.
Freya shrugs. “You need to stop lying to me.”
“I’m trying to keep all of us safe. I didn’t lie to you. I delayed the truth till you are ready.” He feels that his bones fracture on his left leg. He walks limply.
“What are the differences? You always think I’m not ready and out of control. Look at yourself Al. You can’t fight this battle if you’re weak.” She walks towards him, patting his back. “Don’t be a baby and get up. I’ll let this one slide. I’m so excited to meet a family.”
