Warm Front - Chapter 16

"I remember that..."

I opened my eyes and lifted my head from Mathew's shoulder. I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, trying to see clearer. I noticed again that I had been sleeping on his shoulder and blushed a light pink at the window. Then the thing he said struck me as weird.

"Remember what?" I asked, turning back to look at me. Heat flushed my cheeks when I realized he had been staring.

"The dream you just had," he answered simply, leaning back in his seat. My brows furrowed in confusion.

"Mind reading's a class at the academy," he replied to my expression. A flash of emotions rolled through me, then disappeared. I nodded my understanding as my eyes drifted to the passing cars.

"I'm 5'4 now," I muttered. Mathew chuckled softly, causing me to look back at him.

"I'm 5'8," he whispered, a mischievous glint in his eyes. I paled.

"The deal - I can't remember - it - you know, dreams and such? I forget easily," I rambled, trying to keep my eyes on anything but him. He smirked and flattened one of his palms. He measured his head then leaned closer to me and held his hand over my head a few inches. I could feel his breath on my cheeks as he stayed suspended there, making me choke on my own breath. He leaned back slowly, almost reluctantly.

"It went something like if I grew to be taller than you - " He was cut off by the sound of squealing breaks. The screen lowered again and Naomi and Kim looked back at us. The doors unlocked and I practically fell out of the car in my hurry to get out of the cramped space. I grabbed my bag and walked up to the reception center. I noticed Thomas on the steps and fell back behind Kim so they could greet each other. They exchanged a sweet, quick kiss and matched each other's steps perfectly. Naomi came up beside me with her bag and we followed them into the building.

A young receptionist with dark brown eyes and bleached blonde hair who was chewing gum met us at the front desk. She looked like she was about 2 years older than us. She was reading a magazine and she looked up boredly at the three of us. She nodded a greeting at us, but when Mathew came in, she dropped her magazine and sat up straighter. We approached the front desk with Kim leading us.

"Welcome to Riverside. Please sign this book and I will give you the number of your cabin," she smiled politely, fluttering her eyelashes at Mathew not so subtly. We all signed the little book and she told us we were on campground number 5. We walked down several campsites before getting to cabin number 3. A little boy was playing with a pink rubber ball and kicked it over to us. It rolled at my feet and I picked it up and threw it back to him. The little boy caught it, but almost dropped it again when the rubber shocked him. I winced, turning away and going into our campsite.

I helped Naomi set up the room we were sharing while the boys did theirs. We finished before them and Naomi collapsed into one of the beds, groaning. I laughed and leaned my hands on my knees to rest for a second.

"Camping is so hard!" she complained. I rolled my eyes.

"You haven't seen camping yet," I answered, pulling her to her feet. The boys finished with their tent and met us around the fire pit outside.

"We need to collect sticks for fire," Mathew suggested. We split into two groups again, the girls and the boys, and headed into the woods. I tugged Naomi around slowly, picking up an armful of sticks along the way. She picked at a few sticks, and when we got back to the campsite, she had gotten a handful. We dropped them into the fire pit and sat around waiting for the others until we heard a scream. Naomi lifted into the air and was ready to fly over, but I tugged on her pants until she came down.

"They don't know, remember?" I hissed. She frowned but landed on the ground again. We took off towards the scream, following it to a river. Kim was leaning over the rushing water, crying out to Thomas, who had seemingly lost his footing and slipped into the river. Mathew was in shock, but he was frozen in place with a strange glow in his eyes. I ran over to a thin tree hanging on by its roots and pushed it down so Thomas could grab on when he passed. The rapids pushed him into the tree, and I took the chance to ease onto it. The branches swayed under me as I reached out to Thomas. He grabbed my hand and I pulled him onto the branch with me. I heard a crack from the roots and realized it was breaking. I pushed Thomas off and grabbed onto an overhanging branch to keep from falling into the river with the tree. I climbed back down to safety and slumped against the tree.

We walked back to them cabin and sat around the fire pit as Thomas changed into dry clothes. Kim started the fire, feeding it the branches we had collected from earlier. I gazed into it, remembering how I had killed my grandparents with fire. Blue fire, to be exact. I looked away when Thomas joined us again with ingredients for s'mores. I took mine and everyone else did too, holding them over the fire. Naomi, Kim, and Thomas were all was roasting theirs neatly, making the edges golden and squishy. Mathew and I just let it catch fire several times. Naomi looked at me and Mathew like we were insane.

"What are you doing to those poor marshmallows?!" Naomi shrieked as I pressed my chocolate bar onto the marshmallow and graham crackers. I just laughed and ate mine. There was enough for tomorrow night, but just barely, so I didn't have seconds. Naomi finished hers and we stood up to go to our cabin.

I changed into clothes for tomorrow instead of pajamas and tucked into bed. Naomi took a shower and exited the bathroom with a face mask and her hair tied up with a towel. She tightened her robe around her waist and shuffled to her bed in her fuzzy slippers. She sighed and closed her eyes. I did the same and soon fell asleep.
