Volt - Chapter 7
I was being shaken awake. I opened my eyes and zapped their arms gently so they'd pull away. Then I remembered where I was and my eyes snapped open. I jumped over the groaning Naomi to the bathroom, changing, brushing my teeth, and brushing my hair in a matter of seconds.
I had on a short-sleeved plain gray t-shirt with some black soccer shorts and my black and purple Nike trainers. My hair was still messy though, and, once she got up, Naomi kept insisting to put it in a french braid. I acquiesced and sat down at the desk for her to do my hair. After she was done causing me eternal pain, she held up a mirror to my face and I saw my reflection (no duh). The lighter blonde streaks in my hair made it shiny when under a light, and the darker brown ones contrasted my face. I was stunned. Eventually I concluded that Naomi had made up for causing me pain by making me prettier than normal.
Naomi led me down the Green Hallway, or, as she liked to call it, the Lizzy Hallway until we got to a long, dull hallway. The walls of the hallway were decorated in pictures of superheroes smiling at the camera, and some were memorials for the supers. Most of the pictures were just the suits they wore, though.
Naomi opened the door at the end of the hallway and gestured for me to step out. I took a careful step out and had to hold my breath to keep from laughing out loud.
The room was modern as all heck, with big windows and a large flat-screen t.v. There was one gigantic shelf holding several silver artifacts. A small wooden coffee table was placed in front of the long couch, its dark oak contrasting the light blue wool carpet. The couch itself was a dark black color, matching the table and the shelf. There was a lady with cropped platinum blonde hair in a long dark blue dress sitting on the couch with her legs elegantly crossed. She smiled when she saw Naomi, gracefully standing up and walking over to us. She enveloped Naomi in a hug, then stood back to take a look at her.
"Ah, Disappearing Act. I remember when I made your suit. You were a tricky one," the lady said in a voice reminding me of tinkling bells. Naomi smiled back.
"Astrid, this is Elizabetha. She's a new one," She said, waving her hand at me. Astrid looked at me with narrowed eyes. Then her face broke into a beaming smile so bright I think I almost put my hand to my face to block it out. She took me up into a delicate hug.
"Follow me, please," she said politely after she let go of me. I followed her into room with a similar appearance, except the coffee table was replaced with a roundish step stool thing. Naomi told me to stand on it while Astrid grabbed some measuring tape from a drawer.
I stood up on it while Astrid too the measurements for my legs, then my waist, then my stomach and so on. I stifled a yawn as she finally finished. She told me to stay still while she drew a design for my suit.
"What power?" Astrid asked Naomi.
"Electric based," Naomi answered simply, leaving me to stand still until my legs cramped so Astrid could draw designs for my suit. Again, eternal pain.
"Name?" Astrid questioned again, this time to me. I thought for a long moment. Then it came to me.
"Charge," I answered, and Naomi grinned at me.
"Finished!" Astrid called finally. I stepped off the stool with my eyes slightly closed from exhaustion. My feet didn't land on the steps, so I took another step. Again, no steps. I frowned slightly. Naomi finished talking with Astrid about something on the design and looked up at me again. She put a hand to her mouth to keep from laughing. I took another step then gave up. How long was this dark stool? I'd stepped on with practically half a step and now it was taking three? I looked down and saw nothing beneath my feet.
As soon as I noticed, I fell down, landing hard on my butt against the wool rug. Naomi rushed over, smiling from ear to ear. She stuck out a hand to help me up and I took it, easing myself to my feet. Astrid nodded approvingly at me.
"She shows great promise, Naomi," she smiled at Naomi, beckoning us forward. I walked over to her to see the designs she had drawn, still a little confused.
Design number one on the paper showed a skin tight light blue suit with a minty greenish cape reaching the ankles. The chest had a letter C on the front for 'Charge'. The gloves had some sort of best-conducting-electricity-elastic or something like that. The suit was also made of that. The shoes were grey-blue running shoes, and the mask a dark blue with a blocky design on it.
Design number two was almost the same as number one, except it had a short skirt and boots for the shoes.
I immediately was drawn to design number one and picked that one out. Astrid disappeared in another room for a second, then called for me to follow her. I stepped inside yet another room, this one harboring a great machine. Astrid pointed at a stepping stool at the front of the machine for me to climb on. She pressed some buttons in the machine, putting in my measurements. I stepped on and felt my clothes being taken off me. I didn't have time to be embarrassed, because metal claws gripped my waist and stretched a cool elastic fabric over me. There was a little hexagonal design on it, and I fingered it while my cape was being placed on me. My Nike trainers were untied and pulled off, replaced by incredibly comfortable running shoes and my hands were placed in gloves. Finally, my mask was placed on my face.
The machine set me down on the other side and I stepped out into view. Astrid squealed and pulled my arm to show Naomi. We walked into the other room and I saw her in her suit, a white one with no cape and knee-high cream boots. Her chest had the letters D and A on the front for Disappearing Act. She ran up and hugged me, squealing like Astrid.
"Now you're ready for training."
