Static - Chapter 8
We said our goodbyes to Astrid then continued to the arena. I kept fiddling with my mask, adjusting it endlessly and pulling up my gloves nervously. The mask had turned out differently than Astrid had said, I noticed. It was more sparkly and swirly. I honestly didn't mind.
"Charge?" Naomi asked from beside me. I punched her shoulder lightly and laughed along with her.
"I was put on the spot!" I explained. She nodded her head.
"I'm not saying it's bad. I just wasn't expecting you to come up with a good one," she replied. I blushed lightly and kept walking in silence. When we got to the arena doors, she stopped me and put a hand on my shoulder.
"There are a few people to keep away from. From here on out, no using our real names, okay?" Naomi warned. I nodded my head and took a deep breath as she opened the door.
The arena was a huge stadium with seats and everything. The ceiling was very high up and there were so many seats. Naomi walked up beside me, pointing out everything. She said the capacity was 114,000 people and the height was 83.8 meters; almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty. Naomi led me to a corner in the field where Mathew was sitting. He wasn't wearing a suit, I noticed.
"Hi, Mathew!" Naomi called out to him, waving her arms around in the air. He stood up and waved back at us. Naomi lifted off the ground before I could do anything, leaving me stranded in the middle of the field. Now she was standing next to Mathew, smirking widely. I threw her my most evil glare, then ran over to them. Naomi was just finishing explaining my superhero name when I got to them. Mathew nodded.
"There are extra courses she could take like mind control," he told us, making me glare at him too. I was starting to believe I was stuck in that position.
"Yeah, and you specialize in..." Naomi started.
"Nice try," Mathew smirked, rolling his eyes. Naomi groaned.
"Mathew's the only person in this entire compound that I don't know the superpower of," Naomi explained to me, practically growling at Mathew. He smiled.
"Moving on. First thing: Flying. Every super can fly if they have enough energy," Mathew lectured, and Naomi started levitating. Naomi grabbed my hands as she got higher, making me float off the ground. I was so tense I think I might've gained a few pounds. Naomi grunted.
"Help me out here, Charge," she strained. I tried to focus on flying, but all I could think of was falling. Naomi was steadily getting higher, getting ready to drop me. She let go of my hands once we were a few feet in the air, but I landed on my feet instead of flying. We tried again and again from higher and higher elevations, every time a failure.
Once I had fallen on my back for what seemed like the hundredth time, I heard another voice talking to Naomi. I got to my feet and faced them.
The boy who had walked over was one of those perfectly built guys that perfectly built girls drooled over. He had reddish brown hair and chestnut brown eyes. His suit was a distorted red and silver color, with an orange cape and mask. He had red converse sneakers and a charming smile. I almost gagged on the spot.
"You must be new here," he greeted me, ignoring Naomi. He continued, "You seem to be having trouble. Are you sure you're a super?" His friends snickered behind him, causing me to bristle.
"I am new here. Who are you?" I asked politely, holding out my hand for him to shake. He took it, and I had to resist the urge to fry his empty brain.
"The Distortioner. And you, miss?" he questioned, matching my tone. I let my hand drop.
"Charge," I replied. Naomi was looking between us with wide eyes.
"No, your real name, because you're not a real superhero," he corrected, mocking Naomi's wide eyes. I bit my tongue and turned away from him before I could zap him to Mars. Naomi stepped up next to me, walking along with me. All of a sudden, I was pulled back by a strong force. I was in midair, with Naomi looking up in alarm at me. I looked at Distortioner, resisting the urge to flip to my other self.
"Please put me down," I glared, gritting my teeth. He smirked triumphantly.
"No, I believe you were very rude by leaving the conversation," he shouted up at me. The force pulled me again, this time throwing me across the arena and making me land uncomfortably on my back. I got up and dusted myself off like nothing had happened. The force took me up in the air again and threw me all the way back down to The Distortioner's feet. He laughed and my eyes flickered blue.
No, no, no!
I thought, silently cursing The Distortioner. If I revealed myself here, they'd think I was a villain. And believe me, being a villain in the middle of a school full of teenage superheroes was not a good idea. I stumbled to my feet again.
"I won't fight you," I yelled at him. He frowned slightly. The force threw me up into the air and let me drop. I felt my body stopping mid way, but not because of the force. I was flying! I couldn't believe it.
"Aww, it's no fun. Get angry! You're just proving my point!" he whined. My eyes flickered again and I rubbed them to try to stop it from breaking out. My arms were fizzing again, and I ached to zap something. He cackled below me as the force threw me to the ground, and that was the last straw.
I reached both my hands outwards and let out an energy surge so powerful my eyes turned blue and I had to dig my heels into the dirt of the arena to keep my balance. The Distortioner, on the other hand, had flown backwards so far he was just a speck in the distance. He'd hit the opposite wall with such force that the ground shook. Everyone stopped what they were doing and turned to look at me incredulously.
I paled. Mathew and Naomi came up to me and dragged me out of the arena. Mathew was panicking a bit because of my eyes. I kept telling him I was fine but he wouldn't listen.
"That was amazing!" Naomi congratulated me when we were back at the room. My eyes were still slightly blue, so I had to calm down in the room until lunch.
"I'm sure your boyfriend was impressed," Naomi muttered slyly. I shot upwards so fast I hit my head on the roof of the bottom bunk. Naomi started rolling on the floor from laughter. I scowled, blushing.
"He's not my boyfriend," I mumbled, rubbing my forehead. Naomi didn't hear. She was too busy laughing at me.
