Surge - Chapter 9
I woke up with throbbing headache. I'll admit it, as opposed to prior belief, it is most definitely NOT a wonderful way to start the day. I yawned and threw my covers off of me, grumbling some insults at the world. I went to the bathroom to take a quick shower and change then came back out.
Naomi was sitting at the desk, writing something. Probably notes. Ha, who am I kidding? Probably a fanfiction about her and one of the supervillains of NYC.
"Hey, Naomi," I yawned again, feeling groggy and especially feisty today. I rubbed my head, trying to see where the headache was coming from.
"Good morning, Lizard," she replied, not turning around. I sidled up behind her and read over her shoulder. Score! I was right. It was with Ray, the gama ray blasting supervillain. He was also a teenager, so it was possible she had a crush. Naomi continued writing until she noticed I was watching. I laughed as she shoved her hands over her paper to protect it. I spun her chair around to make her look at me.
At the sight of me, her eyes widened and her jaw dropped open. I rolled my eyes at her expression.
"I know I'm ugly when I have a headache, but sheesh," I joked, smiling. Her expression didn't change. I frowned slightly then continued, "What? Is there something on my head?"
Her expression broke into a nervous smile, "You have a headache?" She squeaked. I nodded and she kept going, "Look in the mirror."
I looked at her in confusion, but followed her orders anyways. I went into the bathroom and looked at my reflection. Nothing was wrong. My face was okay, my shoulders were okay, my hair...
MY HAIR!
"Holy Mother of all things smokes!" I screamed. Naomi laughed nervously from the other room. "What the heck happened to my hair?! Did you do this?"
Naomi shook her head. My head throbbed and I doubled over in pain. Naomi rushed to my side. She was slowly narrating what was happening. The blue was effectively creeping down the now platinum blonde hair, making it an ombre effect. She was telling me how dangerous it was for a superhero to have different colored hair. She told me how I could lie I was Charge's biggest fan or something.
I rushed out of the room and down to the dinner hall with Naomi close on my heels. I got a lot of weird looks from senior supers, but I ignored them. I threw open the door and rushed to the lunch line.
I got my normal burnt toast and lemonade and sat down at a table with Naomi. Mathew was staring at us like we were crazy, which, we probably looked like we were. My head throbbed again but I didn't want to make a scene so I bit the inside of my cheeks.
"What happened to your hair?" Mathew asked. I shot him a death glare.
"I don't know," I growled. Mathew laughed.
"Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Mathew joked, trying to lighten the mood. My face softened and I cracked a smile.
"My head hurts and for some reason this is happening," I explained, my patience slowly returning to me.
"Probably because of yesterday. Do you think it's permanent?" He asked, taking a bite of his scrambled eggs. I nodded.
"I took a shower and it didn't even affect it," I admitted. Mathew finished his breakfast, closely followed by me and Naomi then we got up from our table and put our trays in the bins.
"Sunday is free day," Naomi said as we walked outside. Mathew had deserted us and was now playing soccer with his friends in the arena. I shrugged. My mind wouldn't leave the fact that I would be identified so easily as a super when I got home. I was already coming up with a story because I knew Kimberley and Amber would ask about it. My phone rang in my pocket and I jumped a few inches in the air. It seemed like it had been so long since I had used my phone.
I picked it out of my pocket and looked at the alert in all red letters. Apparently, Shadow was robbing a jewelry store right now and we were alerted on our phones.
We ran back into the building to change into our suits, me complaining that we could run there while Naomi said we should fly. I finally agreed, but only because she said she'd buy me an ice cream cone. I opened the window and let Naomi slide out first then I squeezed through. I managed to stay in the air without tipping over, which was a personal achievement. We flew to the jewelry store, avoiding birds and tourists along the way
When we finally got there, Shadow was leaning against a glass case, stretching. Naomi barked some noble words at him while I just hung there, waiting for her speech to be over. At the end of it, Shadow slow clapped and rolled his eyes.
"I'm bored. Can we fight already?" he pouted. Naomi went invisible and I was left all alone. I waited for her to do something to him but nothing happened. He looked as confused as me.
"You know I don't like hurting newbies!" Shadow whined, looking at me with an 'I'm sorry about this' look. He teleported behind me and kicked me in the back, causing me to fall forward. He reappeared in front of me and I charged up my hands and my suit. He sank (like I said, sank) into the floor and materialized again next to me. He tried to throw a punch but was blown back a couple feet by my electric suit. I grinned at his shocked expression.
My hands reached forward and shot out a ton of little bolts in Shadow's direction. He dodged most of them, but the ones he got stung by hurt. Then I realized: dark energy is the opposite of light energy. We were equals in this battle.
He shot a mass of black energy at me, sending me flying backwards. I got up and faced him again.
"Copycat!" I grinned. He matched my smile and shot out a dark energy blast at the same moment I shot a light one. They collided in midair and exploded, sending both of us flying backwards. One of the cops standing to the side grabbed his arms and escorted him into the vehicle. At that moment, Naomi reappeared in front of me and helped me fly back to the academy.
"Nice job!" she praised, making me shine with pride. We flew over another building and over another park full of small dogs.
"Where were you?" I asked. She just shrugged apologetically.
"I wanted to see how you did without me," she explained. I laughed.
"How did I do?" I said, putting up all my fingers then just one, "On a scale of 1 to 10."
She thought for a moment, "I would say... seven. Because you fought well, you just enjoyed it too much!" She joked, poking my good arm.
I sighed. This was the life of a superhero. A life I had been missing out on because I thought I was weird. Strange how times change.
