CHAPTER ONE

1.0 | Kai Dean

"WHERE ARE YOU?" She thought heard the voice of Sophia Lopeź shout. The blonde was walking through the streets of her destroyed town, searching for her best friend. Sophia had disappeared without a trace only a month beforehand. Kai Dean had assumed that she joined the Jocks, or the Cheermazons, because of how much she wanted to be part of one of the so-called tribes.

Her blue eyes scanned the barren street she was venturing down, not seeing anyone in sight. Then, she heard the roar of a motorcycle.

"Shit," she whispered to herself before hiding behind an old apartment building, out of sight. Kai remained quiet, in hopes of not being found by Baron Triumph. The man, didn't seem like a man. He captured kids that survived the apocalypse, and it's believed that he eats them.

Once the motorcycle had passed, and was far enough away not to spot her, she bolted from her spot and towards her home. An abandoned warehouse, in which leather jackets were made, is what sheltered Kai and her friend, but now only housed Kai.

She barricaded the door, just in case someone tried to enter her safe place. With a huff, she walked downstairs, to the basement, where she resided. The basement was filled with jackets when she had found it, but she used those materials to create herself some new boots, a rug for her new room, and then just moved the rest of the jackets to storage units inside the warehouse.

"God, Soph," she sighed, "where the fuck are you?" Kai questioned, her eyes landing on a picture of her and her friend since birth. When the bomb, the one that had caused her to be where she was at that moment in time, had gone off, the two girls were hidden in the girl's bathroom at the high school. When they exited the building, they realized that the city of Los Angeles was no longer inhabited by adults.

Teenagers were the only survivors.

Sophia and Kai had been quite the pair, kicking the world's ass as they successfully survived. Quickly, they discovered ghoulies. The adults had turned into ghoulies, muttering the last thing they were thinking about as they tore living creatures apart.

Shaking her head to stop the memory, Kai had decided that it was time to head back out. Packing her backpack with anything she'd need, and every weapon she had, the girl opened one of the factory windows and exited the building, unaware that she wouldn't be returning to the place she's lived for six months.

𑁍

She heard a scream, causing her to spin around, and her eyes landed on Josh Wheeler entering a church that she had learned was occupied by the golf club, part of the jock tribe.

"What the fuck is this kid doing?" Kai asked herself before silently entering behind him, and hiding by one of the doors.

The golf club members were surrounding a makeshift cage, cheering and banging as a girl screamed from inside. "Josh!" She heard the girl call, and her brows furrowed. She recognized that voice.

The captain of the golf team, Terrence, turned to see just what she was yelling at. When his eyes landed on Josh, he was instantly happy at the thought of having, yet another, person to cage.

"Lookie here!" He called out, silencing the boys and grabbing their attention. "A party crasher. Hey, bros, what does the golf team do to those who crash our party?"

Kai regretted to admit that she had dated the dweeb that lead the golf team, and she felt like she'd be able to talk some sense into him if things escalated.

Just as she finished that thought, Terrence was beginning to swing a golf club modified into a scythe at Josh.

"Woah, Terry, chill!" Kai called from the shadows, approaching the group of boys. "We both heard a scream and thought someone needed help." She told him, signaling for Josh to go along with it.

Her eyes drifted to the cage, "What's that thing back there?"

"None of your business, Kai." Terrence snapped, earning a chuckle from the blonde.

Without dropping her smile, she pulled out her gun and aimed it at the freckle-faced boy. "I said, what's that thing back there?"

"None of your fucking business, Kai," one of the boys said, earning a glare from the girl. "Buzz off, fly. Unless you wanna die."

Laughing, Kai cocked her handgun, "You boys know I hate repeating myself. I'm not fucking around, Losers. Let the girl go, or else I'll let this bullet go through your fucking head." She growled with a smile.

"You're wasting our time," Terrence shouted, "and now you're gonna die." He stated, loudly.

Josh pulled out a katana, earning an impressed look from Kai, while she just shot Terrence in the knee.

Screaming in pain, Terrence collapsed to the ground and shouted to Josh. "Who the fuck are you, man?"

"Josh, and I've got a killer origin story."

Rolling her eyes, Kai began to speak before he could. "Long story short, he dated Sam Dean, became one of the guys she's fucked, and now he's looking for her even though there's a chance that bitch is dead. There, you're all caught up. Can I fucking shoot you now?" She asked,

Suddenly, the rest of the boys began to charge at Josh and Kai, leaving the cage unattended. In a flash, the girl's favorite child popped out of the cage.

"Angelica!"

"Angelica?!" Josh exclaimed in disappointment. "Fuck!"

Rolling her eyes, Kai grabbed Angelica and Josh, and rushed from the church. After they got about fifteen feet away from the building, Josh turned to the blonde. "Kai Dean?! What the fuck are you doing here?"

"Excuse me?" She asked, stepping towards the boy, "I'm surviving, looking for Sophia, and helping your punk ass out. So, test me again, and Terry won't be the only one with a bullet in his fucking leg." Kai growled before grabbing her keys and sprinting to her car.

"Angelica! C'mon, I'll let you drive later." Kai called to the ten year old girl who she babysat for the longest time. Her eyes traveled to a person standing not far from them, "Uh... Hello?"

She ran back over to Angelica and Josh, all three of them preparing for a fight.

"The child who boasts like a man may count his pubes on one hand." The person called, Kai instantly recognizing the voice.

She sprinted over, "Holy fuck, Wesley?!" She squealed, jumping into her friend's arms and hugging him.

Wesley and Kai had walked back over to Josh and Angelica, the newest arrival noticing the sword in Josh's hands.

"Nice sword. I see you listened to the wisdom I dropped, Joshua Wheeler." Wesley said with a smile.

Kai perked up, "Wes, I got one of your swords in my car. Been keepin' it for when we ran into each other again."

"Thank you, Kai," Wesley said, pulling her into a side-hug.

As Wesley and Josh were talking, about stuff that Kai didn't necessarily care about, she started her venture to her car. It was a nice car, too. A matte black 1965 Chevrolet Impala, perfect for her.

"Hop in, Losers! We got a couple people to find." She called over her shoulder, causing the group to approach her car.

Angelica laughed, "Holy shit! You stole your Aunt Isador's car!"

"Is it really stealing if she's dead?" Kai jokingly asked as the boys hopped in the backseat and Angelica hopped in the passenger's seat.

In her rearview mirror, Kai saw the golf club exiting the church, their eyes instantly landing on her car.

"Fuck.." She mumbled, "You guys better hold on tight, I've got some guys with small balls to lose."
