Welcome to Cell by Cell. 

This story was written for the Open Novella Contest 2026 using the following prompt:

#40: "You and your greatest enemy are struck by a curse that binds your lives together. The only way to survive is to share a kiss, but you would both rather face death than each other."

I loved this prompt. Then I broke it.

Jesse and Dakota aren't enemies; they're strangers, which is worse. Enemies at least know each other. These two have nothing in common except a car, a highway, and a curse that's rewriting their DNA.

And the kiss? The prompt says a kiss is the cure. I asked: What if the cure demands something far more terrifying than a kiss? 

This is a story about bodies and grief and what it means to let someone in so deep they live under your skin. It's a road trip. It's a love story. It's a horror story. Sometimes it's all three in the same sentence.

Content notes: This story contains body horror (non-graphic but unsettling), panic disorder, grief, parental loss, references to illiteracy, and emotional intensity. No explicit sexual content. No character deaths. There is hope at the end... I promise.

A note on the dual POV: Chapters alternate between Jesse and Dakota's first-person perspectives. As the story progresses, you'll notice the chapter headers change. That's intentional. Watch the names.
