Author's Note
Thank you for reading.
This story started with a contest prompt about two enemies bound by a curse. I didn't write that story. I wrote one about two strangers... which felt scarier. Enemies at least know each other. Jesse and Dakota had nothing. No history, no grudge, no reason to stay. Just a Craigslist ad, a broken car, and a light on a highway that decided they belonged to each other.
I wanted to write a love story that earned its love. No shortcuts. No instant chemistry. Two people forced into the most intimate experience imaginable, sharing a body, a mind, a grief, and discovering that the thing they'd been running from their whole lives wasn't connection. It was being known.
I also wanted to scare you. If I did both, I did my job.
A few thank-yous: to the ONC community for building a space where stories like this get to exist. To every reader who made it to Chapter 18... you held on. That matters more than you know.
Cell by Cell is my entry for the Wattpad Open Novella Contest 2026. If you enjoyed it, consider adding it to your reading list or leaving a comment. Visibility is oxygen for contest entries, and yours keeps this story breathing.
Wish me luck.
Or don't.
Dakota's mother says her daughter doesn't need it.
But I'll take it anyway. 🤣
