When Codie wakes up, she feels much better than last night. Checking the time, she groans when she sees its noon. Figures she'd wake up late since she stayed up last night. Though it wasn't even her fault, either!
The girl makes her bed and gets dressed for the day, pulling a sweatshirt littered with realistic bees over her head. She brushes her hair as she goes into the kitchen. As soon as she does so, though, she hears Sun yell out from their room.
"Oh, oh! Is that Codie!? Good morning!! You sure slept in late!" He greets her in the kitchen as she looks back at his pure white eyes sheepishly.
"I'm sorry, were you waiting for me to wake up to come out here?"
"Yes, yes! I didn't want to wake you! Moon isn't up either so it's not like I could do much out here by myself anyhow! You two have that in common! Sleeping late!"
"Aha, I try not to make it a habit. I like to get an early start on my shopping but last night was a little rough..."
Sun's smile drops as he looks at her in concern. "Oh, are you alright?"
"I think it was just nerves," she replied. "Uh, how'd you sleep?" Codie directs the attention off of her.
"Oh, just marvelous, thanks for asking! Do you want breakfast? Or well I guess it would be lunch, now... Well? Wouldja?"
Codie startles, not expecting the sudden giddiness of the Sun in her face all of a sudden.
"Yes?"
"Perfect! How does a...hmmm," he goes quiet, a hand to his chin as he bends over to look into the fridge. "We need to go shopping..." Sun stands back up, closes the fridge, and addresses the human, "Wanna go shopping? It'd be my first time and I'd love it if you'd come with!"
How could Codie possibly say no to this literal ball of sunshine?
"Sure! Lemme grab my backpack and put on shoes." Sun squeals happily as Codie hurries and grabs her things, slipping on tennis shoes. Sun meets her at the front door but before they can leave, Codie grabs a granola bar from the cupboards, stuffing it into her purse.
The strange duo piles into Sun's car and heads to the nearest supermarket, being a Safeway.
"This is so exciting!" Sun says when they enter the store. "Do you think this is the place the pizzaplex ordered their food from?" Codie looks up at him and his spikes spin curiously.
"Probably not, Sun, big companies like the plex have a specific supplier where they get their things from. I doubt they get pizza from Safeway of all places."
As the two begin their shop, Codie having ran back to grab a cart, Codie can't help but notice many of the other shoppers and onlookers were either staring or glaring at the hulking animatronic.
She tries to ignore them but a lot are making her uneasy. Sun doesn't seem to notice, luckily. To try and take her mind and eyes off of them, she asks, "So what do you and Moon like?"
"Oh we like almost everything! I really love sour things, though! And Moon loves chocolate stuff!" Codie nods, the few things Sun has thrown in the cart making more sense now. She asks about everyday foods they should get. "Whatever you'd like, friend! I'm sure Moon and I would like what you like."
"Okay," Codie smiles, grabbing a pack of buttermilk Eggo waffles. "How 'bout these?" She smirks, wiggling the box.
"Oooh! Waffles! Yes, yes, yes!"
As she places them in the cart, a person walks by, glaring at them. The man coughs into his fist, "Freak..." Codie frowns at that and looks up to her roommate. Sun looks downtrodden, his eyes scrunched up.
'I'm not a freak...am I? I-I got new upgrades done so I don't look as scary anymore! The kids loved me and...and...'
"H-hey, we got enough stuff, Sun, why don't we go check out?" Codie touches his arm gently. He nods silently and the pair solemnly picks lane number 7, placing their groceries on the belt. The lady cashier looks up.
"Hello! Did you find everything- Uh!?" Her eyes trail up, up and up into Sun's white eyes. The girl starts to sweat. "Er-um, did you find everything, Miss?" Codie gives her a tight smile.
"Yeah, thanks," she says blandly, no longer in the happy mood she came in with. The transaction goes by in an awkward silence. Sun looks around curiously, though more depressed than before. and the cashier avoids eye contact with either of the two, her hands even shaking slightly.
After the food is all bagged up, the lady hands them their receipt, no words managing to leave her lips to bid them farewell. The two load their things and get in Sun's car, buckling up.
Codie finally sighs after the long silence of nothing. "Listen, Sun, don't...don't listen to people like that guy, okay. I think you're amazing. You are not a freak."
Sun continues to stare forward, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "Th-thank you, friend..." Codie smiles sadly, laying a hand on the jester's poofy pants. Sun's spikes slightly turn at the sentiment, turning to give her a small smile back.
After that, Sun drives them home.

Codie chews her fingernails as she sits at her computer. She left her bedroom door open and ever since they got home, Sun hasn't left his room. She's been trying to keep an eye out for him but no luck. She feels bad. His first time grocery shopping and he gets called a freak. Like, come on! This literal ray of sunshine is not a freak! All those people staring at them were just horrible and rude.
Moon sits in his shared room with his brother. "Sun, why are you so...glum? You never cared about how we looked before, besides scaring the children." He lays his hand on the other's shoulder.
"I-..." Sun synthetically sighs, "I don't know, Moon. I was so excited but when we got in the store everybody was just...staring at me. Like I was some circus show!"
"Not everyone has seen an animatronic out and about, Sun, they were probably surprised."
"But then that-that man! He called me a freak..." Sun slumps. "It brought back some bad memories." Moon rubs his shoulder comfortingly, sighing.
"People...people are going to say mean things to us, Sun, and the best thing to do is to let it roll off your shoulders. I'll bet Monty has gotten some mean remarks, do you think he lets it get to him?"
"No..."
"Then you shouldn't either. Whatever happened before at the plex is in the past. If someone says something to you, let me know and I'll tell em off!" Moon shakes his shoulders as he gets up in front of his brother. Sun smiles at his antics.
"Thank you, Moon."
"Yeah, yeah. Now get up and do something, it's weird seeing you so...stationary." Moon didn't include how Codie's been moping, too. Sun stands up straight with a hop.
"Okay!" He skips out of the room, mood exceptionally better after their talk. Codie hears the door open and spins in her chair and watches Sun skipping out toward the kitchen.
"Sun!" she calls out, following him. She catches him in the kitchen getting a glass of orange juice. "Uh, hey..." she rubs her arms. She's glad he's feeling better. She wishes she could've helped more, though. "Wannuhhhh," she searches for something to distract herself and lands on, "play some cards?"
"Hellooo Codie! Yes I would love to! Oooo what are we gonna play!? Go Fish? Old Maid?!" He grabs his glass and takes a sip before joining Codie at the table. She starts shuffling the cards, humming as she then deals them.
"Yeah, Go Fish sounds good." Sun squeals, picking up his cards. 'Did I miss something?' Codie wonders. 'Did Moon talk to him?' They play for a little while, not talking besides when asking for a card. "Hey," the human speaks, "about earlier..."
Sun smiles sadly. "It's okay, Codie, I'm alright now, no need to worry yourself," he replies quietly.
"Right..." Codie rolls her eyes internally. 'What could she have done? She should have defended him back at the store. Said something better than, "You're not a freak." Gosh why does she suck at helping people?!'
During her self-deprecating rant, Sun throws his cards down. "I win!"
"Oh, good job, Sunny." Sun's spikes spin at the nickname. Moon comes out of their room and eyes the two. Why is the room full of tension? He twirls a water bottle in his hand.
"Su-un," he drawls in a teasing tone, "isn't it passed your bedtime?"
"Oh stars!" The robot jumps out of his chair and goes blank for a moment, checking his internal clock. "You're right, Moon! I have plans with Chica tomorrow! Sorry, friend," he apologizes to Codie, though she's not really paying attention, and cleans up his cards, shoving them at her. "I've gotta go to bed! Thanks, Moonie."
Moon just chuckles as his brother brushes past him. Moon joins their human roommate at the table, linking his hands in front of him. "And what about you, hmm?"
"Huh? What about me?" Codie blinks out of her stupor. Moon's red optics narrow in on the girl, noticing her tired eyes.
"Do you have plans tomorrow?"
"Um, not really. I should do some work, though."
Moon hums, a hand to his chin, "Mind if I join you?" he asks, curious as to what the human does exactly.
Codie jumps, shocked at the invitation. "Are-are you sure? 'Cause, me and Sun...and that guy..."
Moon raises a hand, stopping her babble. "I'm more...used to being called things. I wasn't liked as much as Sun at the pizzaplex, so anything some human can say, I've already heard."
Codie sighs 'He says that like it's a good thing...'
"If you'd like," she accepts. Moon looks pleased, linking his hands again and putting them under his chin. Codie fidgets, not really sure what to say as Moon just stares forward. Is he even looking at her or pass her? "Well, I'mma head to bed..." The girl jabs her thumb, as she awkwardly gets up.
Moon only hums in acknowledgement.
Tonight, Codie decides she'll take a melatonin tablet. What with how bad she was last night, she figures this would help her actually get adequate sleep this night. She swallows it down with her bedside water bottle and removes her day clothes. As soon as she lies down, she groans, rubbing at her face.
'Forgot to brush my teeth... Should I? Nah...'
A few mintues later.
'Ok, I'm gonna hate myself if I don't, I better go do it.'
The joints in her neck pop when she gets up. She sighs and goes out of her room without thinking. When she walks the few feet to the bathroom and close the door, is when she realizes she's only wearing a tank top and underwear.
"Oh shooooooooot!" she cries. How did she forget to put shorts on!? Codie peers out the door after opening it to a crack. She sees his blue coloring out at the dining table still, don't know what he's doing, but he's still there and what if he walks by as soon as she leaves the sanctuary of the bathroom?!
'I'll just brush and floss extra slow...' The girl decides, nodding to herself and taking her brush. After finishing cleaning her teeth, she flosses and browses her phone. Unknowingly to her, it's only been 5 minutes.
Codie goes up to the door, slowly opening it as to not make a sound. She peers her head out and looks to the left down the hallway. Moon isn't sitting down anymore, but she can hear him doing something in the kitchen. She closes it gently. The ginger whines. She can't leave until he goes to his bedroom. Accepting her fate, she sits against the back wall and watches some Youtube.
Out in the kitchen, Moon wonders to himself what that human can possibly be doing in the bathroom being completely silent. He heard her electric toothbrush but after that, complete silence.
Maybe she cannot fall asleep again? But she's not running a bath, so what could she be doing? Ah well, he should head to bed himself. He grabs a bottle of water and ambles to his room, opening and closing the door. He perches against the window and watches the stars like always, Sun's synthetic breathing from behind calming him.
The lunar bot stays like this for a couple hours, occasionally taking a sip from his water. He goes to take another but accidentally drops the bottle, water going everywhere on his starry pants. His joints whir as he stands up irritably.
Leaving his bedroom to get some rags from the bathroom, he stops and stares at the light coming from said room. "What," he deadpans. This has to be a coincidence, right? Their silly little human roommate has not been in the bathroom this whole time, right?
He knocks softly. "Hello? Codie?" he murmurs. He doesn't hear anything, not even a shuffle of movement. "Codie?" Nothing. "I'm coming in..." Slowly, he twists the knob and pushes it open, expecting the worst. A human screaming at him to get out or something but what he gets is silence accompanied by the slouched over form of Codie, sleeping against the wall.
The bot's red eyes narrow, gears turning in his head. 'What the hell...' He approaches her, noticing the forgotten, yet still playing, phone on the tile floor. The ginger's chest rises and falls delicately with each breath. A million questions run through his head as he turns to his left and grabs a towel. He dabs at his pants before hanging it on a nearby rack.
"Alright, well, I'd hate to leave you on the floor like this...but I'd also hate to wake you up." Moon hums, coming to a decision. He steps over and bends down, hooking his arms under the human's knees and lifting her up. He secures her in his arms and takes her back to her room, her snuggling into his arms along the way. Subconsciously, his arms heat up to warm her chilled body.
He places her in her bed and tucks her in, smiling down at her. He misses doing this for the children. After, he closes her door and goes to bed for himself.
The entire time, Moon neither noticed or cared of her lack of shorts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Codie groans as her brain wakes up. She is so tired and why is her back so dang sore? Not remembering last night at all, Codie rolls out of bed, almost dragging her blanket along with her. She sluggishly gets dressed for the day before checking her phone. She almost drops it in shock. 'It's noon already!?'
"Crap, crap, crap," she repeats, rushing to the kitchen. Moon lounges on the couch, browsing channels on the T.V. "You weren't waiting long for me, were you?" She winces at her morning voice.
"Not really. Sun left not too long ago and I've just been watching television." Moon replies without turning around.
"I'm sorry. I don't know why I slept in so late..." Moon can't help but notice her not mentioning waking back up in her bed. Does she not remember? He shrugs. "Lemme eat something really quick while my shopper app searches for a job." Codie sets her phone down, her app trying to find a batch, while she goes for a loaf of white bread.
She puts a slice into the nearby toaster and, while she waits for that, pours herself some apple juice. "Whatcha watchin' anyway?"
Moon shrugs, turning on the guide. "Show called...How I Met Your Mother." Codie hums, having heard of it (who hasn't) but never watched it. Ding! The toast pops up and Codie happily slathers peanut butter on it before taking a bite.
"Mm!" she swallows, "Got a batch. Are you ready to go?" Moon turns the T.V off and stands without a word, nodding to the human with a slight smile. The two walk down the stairs and as they approach the car, Codie gasps. "Oh no! Moon how are you going to fit in my car? Sun took your guys'!"
Moon already figured this would happen, talking to Sun about it previously this morning, and they came up with a sorta okay plan. "It's fine. Can you fold the passenger seat? I can bend myself to fit into the backseats okay."
Codie chews her lip. She worries that couldn't possibly be comfortable. Plus, he's super tall, how the heck is he gonna 'bend' himself to fit!? Codie goes ahead and does what Moon asked, folding the seat and rolling as far forward as it can go. "Okay, that's all it can do. You gonna be okay in the back?" she asks with her hands on her hips.
Moon nods silently and gets in. As Codie gets in the driver's seat, she hears all sorts of gears and mechanical whirring as Moon settles in. She sneaks a peak in her mirror and Moon gives her a thumbs up, a grinning smirk on his face, presumably from victory.
Not knowing what to say, Codie starts the drive to their local grocery store for her job. A few minutes away, Codie explains what she does. "Basically I shop for people, check out, load the car and take it to the customers house. Then unload everything and place it on their doorstep."
"Sounds like a lot of work..." Moon replies, his joints whirring from being stiff the whole ride.
"Yeaaaah..." Codie groans a bit at that as she parks. "Hey, um," she looks to her passenger worriedly, chewing on her lip as she watches him slowly unwind himself, "do you need help, Moon?"
"Nope. Just the joys of being nine feet," he deadpans, getting out of the car and smoothing out the wrinkles of his pants. The two walk in comfortable silence into the store, Codie staring down at her phone to see what they're shopping for.
"So we'll start with produce, I hate produce, and then go up the aisle numbers until the other end at the deli...." Codie explains, pointing to the left where the produce department lies.
In the next hour, the strange duo finds a nice way to shop efficiently. Codie shows Moon what to grab down an aisle while she goes down the next aisle. With Moon's photographic memory (literally), it's easy for him to grab everything quickly and meet back up with Codie.
Codie thanks him each time he hands her an item. She scans the items and continues shopping. Throughout the trip, Codie hasn't really noticed any glares being sent their way, making her feel better about bringing him. Moon on the other hand has been getting a few glares, he's just been blocking their line of sight from Codie.
"Last item! I'm going to get in line, could you go grab me...this?" Codie shows the bot her phone, a picture of mustard shining into his face. Taking a moment to remember the size, brand, and type, Moon takes off.
Moon hums to himself, standing in front of the very many bottles of all different kinds of mustard. He puts a hand to his chin in thought, his eyes scanning over each bottle. "Mommy look! It's Mr. Moon!" Said bot turns to look at the source of his name. A little boy tugs at his back turned mother's pant leg.
"What sweetie-" the lady full on screams when she turns around to see Moon standing in his full 9 feet of glory. She hastily starts tugging her son behind her, eyes not leaving the red optics of Moon's. "Stay the HELL away from my son! What even are you!?" she hisses, backing away at the same time.
People nearby that heard the lady shriek soon come over to see what's happening, gasping when they see the hulking animatronic. One worker comes over to try to diffuse the situation, though they won't look at Moon and their hands are shaking.
"Ma'am, please don't cause a scene, we don't want to have to call the police."
"Well then that-that thing needs to leave! I do not want it near my son!" The mother points a finger at Moon.
Meanwhile, Codie hums a song to herself as she waits for her friend. Her head shoots up when she hears an earsplitting scream. She pulls her cart out of line and parks it nearby before running down the aisle the scream came from.
The condiment aisle.
She runs in as the mom yells at the worker for Moon to leave. "Moon, are you okay, what's happening?" Codie reaches her hand out to touch Moon but thinks better of it.
"You!" The mother comes up to Codie, who walked in front of Moon, and jabs a finger at her chest. "Get your tin can monster away from me and my son!"
"Wh-what!?" The ginger gets taken aback, gasping at the woman. The worker approaches again and tries to get the lady to back away.
"Ma'am please!" they try again to no avail as the mom won't listen.
Codie jumps when a hand touches her shoulder. She looks up and meets Moon's gaze, his ruby red eyes calming her nerves a bit. "I got the last thing. Let's just go." He speaks quietly, ignoring the conflict happening in front of them.
Codie nods with a frown, taking the mustard from his hand and scanning it. The two round the corner to head back to the register, the 'Karen's' screams still echoing throughout.
~~Time Skip~~
Thankfully, the two never had any more problems quite like their first shop today. Codie still feels terrible about it, blaming herself for sending Moon on his own to get verbally attacked. She doesn't bring it up though as Moon doesn't seem keen on talking about what happened. So, the two continue Codie's job for most of the day, the worst to have happened were the lingering and staring eyes.
When the two get home, Codie goes straight for her room, narrowly avoiding Sun coming out to greet them. Said bot's smile turns into a frown when he comes out to see her door shut at the same time.
Moon sighs as he goes to the kitchen, his brother following him with a curious frown. "What's wrong? What happened?" Sun eyes him worriedly. Moon doesn't reply for a minute.
"Nothing, Sun, just people."
"That doesn't explain anything, Moonie. I just want to help," Sun pouts, his hands on his hips. "Tell me what happened." The two sit at the table, the solar bot twiddling his fingers.
Moon mumbles into his clasped hands. Narrowing his eyes, Sun leans forward and asks him to repeat himself. "I caused a scene and made Codie upset with me, okay, Sun?" Moon hisses. At Sun's wave to continue, Moon sighs again. "A little boy recognized me and at first I thought it would be nice. Having a kid see me and get excited... But his mother flipped out at the sight of me. People crowded us and the mother said some choice words... got into Codie's face thinking she owned me or something."
Sun can't believe what he's hearing. This is worse than what happened to him! "What happened after?"
"We left and just didn't talk about it the rest of the day. But, I could tell her anxiety was spiked the rest of the time we were out. She was more jittery and jumped around her words when talking to me."
"Anxiety? Are you sure it wasn't just nerves? She was pretty upset with my encounter too..."
"Nah," Moon waves his hand dismissively, "I've seen her medications. She takes pills for anxiety." Sun gasps, point at his brother.
"Moon! You snooped through Codie's stuff?" he accuses.
"Snooped? More like I walked by her open room and saw the bottle. Got curious and, you know how we were prepared with all the little star's medications, I just felt like I should know, you know?"
Sun rolls his eyes, though you wouldn't be able to tell since he had no pupils. "I suppose it doesn't hurt...but you coulda' just asked her."
"Sun! She's already on edge around us! She doesn't sleep at night and with all these people yelling at us and calling us monsters she's probably scared she'll get attacked for associating with us!" Moon ends his rant in a yell, not realizing he was raising his voice.
"Moonie!..." Sun warns in a low voice. He pumps his hands downward while shushing him. "Keep it down, she may be asleep."
"I doubt it..." Moon leans back in his chair, arms crossed with a scowl on her face. "She tends to stay up late with sleeping troubles. She mentioned today that she's never had problems with it before."
Sun looks cofused.
"It's us, Sun. She can't sleep because her brain is probably telling her she's in danger of the big bad animatronics she unfortunately lives with."
Sun scoffs, "You know she decided on her own she wanted to room with us."
"And she's probably been regretting it since the first night." Moon growls with a huff. Sun's internal clock beeps at him. He checks it, and with a sigh, gets up from his chair.
"It's late, brother. Maybe we should all get together and talk about this in the morning?" he suggested. Moon doesn't reply, but Sun didn't expect him to, so he heads off to bed, leaving his other half alone in the dim room.
~~Time Skip~~
The nighttime bot lounges out on the living room couch, mindlessly flipping through infomercials and Spanish rom-coms that litter the channels. At the sound of a door closing softly, he looks towards the hallway with half-lidded eyes. His night vision helps him identify Codie walking down the hall, eyes scrunched up presumably from the bright TV light.
"Moon? What are you doing?" Codie asks, yawning.
He twirls the remote in his hand. "Ah, just...surfing channels?" He makes it sound like he's asking her if that's what he's doing. He cringes but Codie seems too tired to notice anyway. She nods, rubbing an eye. Moon watches her and can't help but compare her to his little stars, rubbing at their tired eyes when they denied being tired to avoid naptime.
The bot fingers his pant's pocket, his candy crinkling at the disturbance. Mutely, the ginger joins the animatronic on the couch. He flinches as she does so, not expecting her to sit down, let alone as close as she is.
"I couldn't sleep." Well, he could have figured that out himself. He hums to let her know he's listening, though. "I-I'm not sure what's going on anymore. I just get so nervous at night anymore. I toss and turn for hours or I have to take a bath to settle my nauseous stomach." Codie eyes scrunch up with unshed tears, her lack of sleep getting to her.
"Do you...take anything?" Moon tries.
"Mhm...melatonin, but it's not very strong." Another yawn.
Moon digs into his pocket, pulling out a fresh Moondrop. "Would.. you like to try my candy?"
Codie grabs it with two fingers, twirling it around to find any words on it. "What is it?" she asks, unwrapping it just a tad to take a sniff. Smells like blueberry and lavander.
"It's my special sleepy-time candy. I would give it to children that had trouble sleeping at naptime."
"Would it even work on me?"
"It's very strong. Some staff workers would even ask me for some before they go home for the night." With Codie's raised eyebrow of suspicion, Moon continues, "I assure you, while strong, it's safe."
"I trust you." Moon eyes widen at her statement. No hesitation at all. She pops it in her mouth and leans back, eyes on the TV as she sucks on the hard candy.
15 minutes go by and Codie feels as if it doesn't work. She doesn't feel any more tired than she's been.
1 hour and Moon worries she may have a serious problem.
Finally. After another 15 minutes, as Moon clicks the TV off, a head falls onto his arm. Codie's breathing is slow, even, and soft. She's out. He can't believe she fell asleep on him. He realizes she must have fallen asleep within those 15 minutes and he just didn't notice. He watches as she snuggles her head deeper into his arm.
It took a little over an hour for the poor girl to fall asleep with a Moondrop in her system. It's unheard of! His Stars knocked out in 5 minutes or less. The staff workers would thank Moon for his fast working 'miracle' so he assumes they knock out pretty fast too. The longest he's seen someone take is 20. So what's wrong with his roommate?
He frowns, tugging a strand of hair away from her face. 'Her nerves must be so shot, the candy took longer to take effect...'
He wants to help, but how do you help someone when the problem is you?
