The old woman shivered uncontrollably, her arms wound tightly around her hunched body. In a nervous frenzy her eyes darted around in search of a face that could relieve her of her fears, but all she saw was a crowd of night creatures with the same blank expressions and heavy stares.
It was still sickly hot in the forest where they'd assembled, the waves of heat from the torches that surrounded them aggravating the usual weather. Through her tattered clothes she could feel the still air surround her like a thin veil. But despite the uncomfortable warmth that had sweat covering every inch of her body, she could feel an ice-cold foreboding that made her teeth lightly chatter.
She could hear her own heartbeat in the silence of the clearing and could practically feel the other creatures' anticipation sizzle through the air. Her eyes trailed after the black smoke from the burning torches as it floated and frowned when she saw not a single light adorning the night sky.
Such a dreary night it was to meet the cold arms of death, though she had expected as much after losing the goddamn doctor. Their mistress had been gathering them at such unusual hours for days, and each time they had lost one of their own to her sudden intolerance of failures.
The old woman let out a shaky breath, fixing her weary eyes on the uneven ground. Her ears could only hear the subtle sounds of breathing disturbing the air and a few rustling here and there from the leaves moved slightly about by nature. But it seemed to her even the forest creatures had scampered away from their ensemble, perhaps picking up on the oppressing aura of their unnatural existence.
How she wished she could do the same, though the thought of being hunted scared her more than an execution. Everything in life seemed to be motivated by survival, whether it be from a literal death or something else less dreadful.
Of all the creatures that surrounded her, why had it been her that was chosen? A good hundred of them had always gathered upon their mistress' summon and she was nothing but an old woman waiting for her silent end. The younger creatures had always been the ones to come after those self-righteous Elementals, and even if they failed they were not simply disposed of.
Then what was so special about the doctor that a lot of them had to suffer a dire fate? And what exactly was their mistress purpose for sending in her weaker soldiers? There had to be some reason for it seemed she didn't want the woman dead. But for the life of her she couldn't determine what motivated her decisions.
Her eyes widened at the sound of familiar footsteps and she looked up to the cold otherworldly eyes of the woman in whose hands her life then lay.
She could still remember their mistress from when she first organized them, an Elemental in her twenties with an uncanny way of motivating them. She had understood their primal needs, shared their views that they were greater than the human race.
All the goddamn Elementals saw them as animals, something to put on a leash and incapable of thought beyond instinct. But their mistress had come and she wasn't like them. She'd acknowledged their minds and their strengths, their superiority as well as their needs. She had promised to lead them to a revolution that would change the supernatural world.
Of course she didn't understand why they had still remained in the shadows even after a decade under her leadership. The reasons, she was sure, could only be known by those in her inner circle. It was from blinding trust to those creatures that the rest of them had followed. And before they knew it they had completely handed her the reins, to direct them as she pleased.
The old woman doubted that trust then as their mistress towered her cowering form with her hair of silver silk that seemed to glitter in the light of the flames. She could feel the weight of her power as if she wanted her down on her knees, her eyes of purple gems boring through her causing a rippling chill to crawl up her spine.
How she looked so dangerously beautiful, her hair a striking contrast to the black she wore, that the old woman couldn't help but stare in awe at the mere sight of her. For the first time she stood so close that if she could only sum up the courage, she could just reach a hand out and touch her.
At the back of her mind she wondered if perhaps this overbearing presence was what drove them to submission. There was no denying the fact that in her veins ran insurmountable strength and power. The once confident woman had turned into a formidable leader, a transformation she herself was a witness to.
"You failed."
The old woman suppressed a shudder at the sound of her mistress' voice, the slightly high pitch reverberating in the silence like the caressed rim of a crystal glass. It wasn't posed as a question for her to answer but a cold accusation, and she felt a foreshadowing of her dreadful fate.
She felt the silence deepen, if such a thing was still possible, as if the other night creatures had simultaneously held their breaths upon their leader's words.
"S-She had help," she said, her voice shaking. She had gone back to staring at the ground, not able to bear their mistress' gaze. "E-Elementals w-where there."
She received no response, not even a grunt to acknowledge she had spoken. It seemed it didn't matter what she said, her punishment decided way before they had gathered.
She then risked another look at the ethereal creature before her. To plead for her life was the only thing she could do. But as she stared into their mistress' steel gaze, she knew no amount of begging would spare her insignificant life. She was no seer - she couldn't see into the future - but what stared back at her could only mean her demise.
There should've been the steady flame of the woman's humanity behind those hypnotic eyes, of this the old woman was undoubtedly sure. But at that moment as she gazed upon them, she could've sworn she saw none of it; she saw nothing but an emotional void that pierced through her soul.
What filled that void instead had her dropping to the cracked dirt. In their mistress' eyes was a sort of godly cruelty. That and a glare of intimidating power.
