Catherine's POV
Six years later...
I sat in the car with my baby brother, Gabriel, and my older sister, Brenna, and my parents in the front seats. We were driving through Berlin, Germany, going to visit our Grandpa. They lived out in the country on a large farm. Gabe was really excited because this was his first time meeting him. Soon we pulled up into a large driveway leading to a farmhouse. Grandpa was sitting on the porch. I got out of the car and ran up to my Grandpa and hugged him. "Hallo Catherine," He smiled at me. "How have you been?"
"I've been good. Remember me telling you the stories about Gabby?"
"I do. You vouldn't stop talking about him in your letters."
"Hi." Gabriel had a toothy smile on his face. "You're my grandpa?"
"I am." While Gabe was chatting with Grandpa I went to go help the others unpack inside.
I looked along the walls; there were many pictures of daddy when he was younger with his mother. Grandma was so pretty when she was younger. I looked at a picture of Grandma. Daddy told me that she had passed away when he was younger. She had a terrible sickness that made her cough a lot. There were letters in frames but I couldn't read the writing. It looked like there was a child that decided to scribble all over the page. (A/N: A.K.A. Cursive Writing)
I walked down the hall until I reached me and Brenna's room. Gabe was going to be sharing a room with us soon but right now he has to sleep with Mommy and Daddy. "Hey Cathy." Brenna looked up at me and smiled. Her eyes were brown just like Daddy, Mommy and Gabe. I have blue eyes just like grandpa. I'm the odd one out of the bunch. Grandpa says that I'm going to do something that nobody else has ever done before. I don't know what he means. "Cathy?" Brenna said, taking me out of my train of thought.
"Yes?"
"Catch." I don't know what she tossed at me but it hit my face directly. I looked at what she threw at me. It was a small, stuffed, grey kitten with a ribbon that resembled the German flag around its neck, tied into a bow.
"I made it for you. I was planning to give it to you for your birthday but you left your stuffed bunny at home and I know you can't sleep without it." I smiled and hugged her.
"Thank you Bren."
"No problem."
That night at dinner, Grandpa was telling one of his war stories. "It looked like that I vas caught," Grandpa told us. "And just at the last minute, I fired mein gun and with one shot I took out the sniper."
The thing was Daddy says that Grandpa wasn't in any war.
"You know vhat? I should tell you kinder about the time I met Germany."
"Germany?" I asked.
"But Germany's a country. How can you meet a country Grandpa?" Brenna asked.
"Oh Germany is more than a country little ones," Grandpa stated. He then went over to an old bookshelf and pulled out a scrapbook. He flipped through the pages until there was a picture of Grandpa when he was younger. He was in a soldier's uniform and next to him was a man with slicked-back blonde hair, blue eyes and a serious look on his face.
"Is that him Grandpa?" I asked.
"That's right," Grandpa replied.
I turned my head to the side as I looked at the man. Could this really be Germany?
"Father, I've told you a hundred times that that man isn't the country of Germany," Daddy said.
"And I have told you a hundred times that it vas Germany!"
While Daddy argued with Grandpa Mommy took Brenna, Gabriel, and me to bed. I laid down in my bed and listened to Daddy and Grandpa argue before falling asleep.
Catherine's Dream
I woke-up in an empty field. There were flowers everywhere and a small stream. "Where am I?" I walked around for a while until I saw a grown man. He had slicked-back blonde hair, and blue eyes. He had a serious look on his face as he looked out over the field. "Hi," I greeted nervously. "My name's Catherine. What's yours?"
"...I'm Ludwug," he greeted back nervously.
I giggled. "You have a funny name. Do you wanna play?"
"Ja, okay," Ludwig took a hold of my hand and led me to a field where grass that was taller than my head grew. We ran through the grass and as we did I lost Ludwig's hand in the grass. Eventually I found my way out of the grass but I couldn't see Ludwig.
"Ludwig? Where'd you go?"
I continued to walk around until I saw a small pond. When I looked at my reflection in the water, I saw that I was a grown-up. "What happened to me?" I asked as I looked at my reflection.
Then I turned around to see a little girl who looked like me, except with shorter hair. "Mutti," she said.
I turned my head in confusion. Why did she call me her Mom?
"I'm not-"
The little girl wrapped her arms around my waist and then reached for me. I picked her up as she kept calling me Mutti. "Mutti I've missed you," She told me.
I smiled at her as I began to wake-up.
I woke-up in bed. Brenna was sleeping and snoring loudly. I held my cat she made me and looked at him. Then I went back to sleep.
