Five
The day had finally come, the day of my marriage. I was very excited. I woke-up to find Ludwig still sleeping in bed. He snored a bit in his sleep and then began moving a bit until he wrapped his arm around me. I blushed a bit as he held me close to his chest and snuggled his face into my hair.
"Ludwig," I whispered. "It's time to get up."
Ludwig groaned a bit before blinking his eyes open. He looked down at me and smiled. "Guten Morgen Catherine," he greeted and then gave me a kiss on my head.
"Good morning to you too Ludwig," I greeted back.
He sat up and brought me up with him. He then let go of me and then went to the bathroom to get ready for the day. I got out his military uniform and laid it out on the bed while I searched for my wedding dress. As I was doing that, Gabe made his way into the room and jumped out to scare me. I jumped and he laughed. "Got you Catherine," he laughed. "You were scared weren't you Cathy?"
"Gabe, get out of here," I yelled. "You have a room all to yourself down the hall." My family had come in from America to make it to the wedding. My Mother and sister helped me pick out the dress and my Father was with Ludwig, installing into his head that he had better take care if me or else it wasn't going to end well for him.
"Come on Cathy, what's the big deal?"
I sighed and pushed my brother out the door. "The big deal is that you need to give Ludwig and me some privacy."
Gabe stuck out his tongue and then left the room to head to his. I sighed and then got ready myself. Mom and Brenna agreed to help me get my hair and make-up ready while Elizabeta fixed my dress up. Ludwig was led to another room and had his brother and Roderich help him get ready. I imagined Gilbert telling Ludwig to do something ridiculous or out-of-character for him while Roderich was telling him to behave like a gentleman and not a "bum".
After my dress was done, Mom started curling my hair and Brenna started applying blush to my face. It was all going by so fast and quick that I didn't even have time to eat breakfast. Gabe kept trying to sneak in to get a quick look at me in my dress, probably to report to Gilbert on how I looked, but my Mom kept shooing him away and telling him to stay out.
Then we made our way to the church in Berlin. Besides the immediate family and friends, it was a small wedding. Feliciano met us there and went with Ludwig for the last minute prepping. Mom and I went to a back room and she put on the finishing touches to my dress. She fixed the train that was connected to my dress, which was 10 feet long mind you, and then tucked a piece of loose hair behind my hair. "Oh look at you Catherine," she commented after looking at me with tearied eyes. "So young, so beautiful. It makes me and your Father proud to see what a mature young woman you've become."
"Thanks Mom," I thanked with a sheepish smile. "To be honest, I'm a bit nervous about all this."
"Well if you're nervous, then maybe we shouldn't go through with this wedding," I heard Dad say from the doorframe. I turned to look at him and saw that he was in a nice suit. Even though he was in his late fourties, the suit made him look like he was thirty-three again, despite a few wrinkles here and there on his hands and face.
"Oh you hush now Joseph," Mom hushed him. "It's your daughter's wedding day. Don't tell her things like that."
"I can tell her that if I want to Maria," Dad gruffed back. "She's too young to get married."
"Oh don't pay him any mind Cathy," Mom insited as she fixed my hair a little more. "Your Daddy's just upset that you're getting married to a wonderful man."
Dad rolled his eyes. Even though he approved of Ludwig, I knew that it was eating him up inside to see me getting married. When it came close to the reception, he and I stood behind the two doors that led into the church and looped his arm around mine. "Now Catherine, if something happens and that boy is responsible-" Dad began.
"Dad, I'll be fine," I told him in a whisper. "Ludwig's a great guy, and you know that."
"I know, but no man is good enough for my little girl." He gave me a kiss on the cheek just before the doors open and the music played.
Down the isle stood Ludwig in his military uniform with a small smile on his face. Next to him was Feliciano, who was the best man, and then there was Gilbert and Roderich standing next to him. To the left stood Elizbeta and Brenna, who were the bridesmaids. When we finally got down the isle, Dad reluctantly released my arm and walked over to sit next to Mom. I smiled underneath my veil as I looked at Ludwig. The preacher went on with the ceremony and then we did our vows;
"Do you, Ludwig Beilshmidt, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?" the preacher asked.
"I do," Ludwig answered.
"And do you, Catherine Gables, take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?" the preacher asked me.
"I do," I answered.
"Then, by the power invested in me, I now pronounce you, husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."
Ludwig then leaned in, lifted the veil, and then kissed me on the lips. Everyone cheered, except for my Dad, who was too busy glaring at Ludwig.
