"Yah, hyung, you better be a regular," Taehyung threatens Yoongi.
Yoongi smirks at him then at the woman who was merely waiting for him to hopefully order.
"Then I'll just have two iced americanos, to go."
"Two? Are you planning on staying awake for two days straight?"
Yoongi rolls his eyes at the younger one. "It's for my colleague," he tells Taehyung. "She's on her way-"
The bells on the door ring as it opens. Another customer has arrived.
Taehyung stands from his seat to greet the new customer but freezes in place instead. His smile falters as he looks at the new person that has arrived.
The other person pauses in place as well. And suddenly between the two, there is this palpable aura that is starting to brew.
"Ah, my colleague is finally here," Yoongi starts, not noticing the tension between the owner and the newcomer. "This is-"
"Bae Joohyun," Taehyung interrupts, looking straight at the sophisticated woman with straight, black and sleek hair.
"Kim Taehyung," she acknowledges him back. They both look away from each other and Taehyung clears his throat.
Wendy watches the interaction between the two and could only feel pity for her boss as she could feel that he wanted to get out of the situation now.
"I didn't know you two have met already," Yoongi quietly comments at the side.
"I-She's..." Taehyung stammers.
"He's my ex," Joohyun nonchalantly finishes for him, crossing her arms while pointedly looking at Taehyung with a dead-panned expression on her face.
Wendy immediately walks back to their makeshift kitchen. Hurriedly, she prepares the two iced americanos for her customers.
So that they can get the hell out of here already.
------------
He was indifferent to the situation.
Because, honestly, he was growing used to it.
The police station is in a disarray again with the newest case of Faeles.
"Emergency meeting, stat!" The third division's chief immediately announces once Joohyun and Yoongi arrive at the station. His loud voice resonates across the office, leaving all of its employees to abandon their work at hand and run to the meeting room.
"Here we go again," Joohyun mutters then takes a sip from her iced americano.
"I just really want to catch Faeles as soon as possible so that the chief could stop pressuring all the time," Yoongi says as they walk to the meeting room. "And so that the government would stop having us by the neck," he finishes in a whisper.
"I heard that," Joohyun whispers back. She lets out a quiet laugh. "I thought it was just me who had the same sentiments."
Yoongi playfully smiles at his partner then focuses his way to the meeting room. Once they find a spot to sit in the room, the chief proceeds with the meeting. He mentions the details of last night's robbery and shows his frustration as every second passes.
"This is the fourth time Faeles has done something like this and has ran away without a trace." The protruding gray color on the chief's hair was starting to take over most of what is left of his youthful black hair.
"Here is the thing, there is no consistent pattern of who she steals from." He points at the screen that is currently projecting the name of the people that were victims of Faeles. "But what we are sure of is that she steals from the heads of big corporations such as the latest one, JBC Foods."
Both Yoongi and Joohyun work as detectives under the third division of the police department. Those assigned in the third division handle cases of theft especially this huge one the city is facing so far.
One detective raises his hand and asks a question, "Sir, how would we know where and when she will strike next?"
The chief lets out a sigh in resignation. "That is what we are not sure of," he answers the detective, sullenly. The chief looks back at the screen and moves to the next slide of the graphic presentation. "That is also why I've been thinking of assigning all the pairs here to different areas that are near the private residences and offices of potential victims."
On the screen are different names of the detectives paired with a specific location.
Yoongi finds himself paired with Joohyun. He's not surprised though. No other man in this division could handle how cold she is. They respect each other as colleagues and he finds it relaxing that there seems to be no chances of changing their platonic relationship to a romantic one.
He always thought that she stayed single throughout her life. That is until he found out that a good friend of his is her ex. What a small world they live in.
"You, with your partner, must stay at your assigned location," the chief continues. "Find a place where you can live for the meantime and focus on stake-outs at night. One advantage for us is that Faeles only strikes at night. Use every daytime to find whatever evidence we can use against Faeles. We want to know what she does with the money she steals from her victims. Understood?"
"Yes, chief!" The detectives in the room answer in a chorus.
He nods in content. "Now get back to work! We have a thief to catch, people!"
The detectives go to their partners and plan for whatever they need to prepare as commanded by the chief. As one needs to work undercover, another identity and job must be prepared to hide their real intentions.
Yoongi and Joohyun are used to it and have stuck to their usual double identities. Yoongi as a photographer and Joohyun as his assistant (never the model, just an assistant).
"Hey Joohyun," Yoongi softly calls out his partner to garner her attention. "Our location is near Taehyung's café-"
"Oh shut it, will you," she snaps at him, flicking a stack of files at his chest.
Yoongi lets out a snicker. "Who would have thought that someone as cold as you would fall for a guy as careless as him."
------------
Wendy was sad yet happy at the same time.
Sad because the other half of her apartment is as empty as her coinbank because her roommate of two years, Kang Seulgi, finally got married to her long-time boyfriend, Park Jimin.
Seulgi, with the help of Jimin, moved out of the apartment four days ago. The two girls hugged and cried for at least an hour as they bade their farewells to each other.
It was bound to happen. Wendy could not keep Seulgi away from her husband, and she could not let the two of them stay here with her. Imagine if those two could not keep their hands away from each other...
Wendy gags at the thought.
Thus, it was best if Seulgi moved in with Jimin. And Wendy opened the other half of the apartment for rent.
Now Wendy is happy because someone finally responded to her offer and immediately took it.
She doesn't have to feel alone anymore and will go back to paying half of the bills in the apartment.
When her new roommate texted her to ask if she could move in tonight, it placed Wendy in a frantic haze to clean up the apartment and prepare tea or coffee as a welcome gift.
Wendy has been cleaning for the past two hours, making sure that the rooms are clean with no dust and cobwebs hanging even in the tiniest of corners. Wendy checked the time on her wristwatch. Any minute from now, her new roommate will arrive. She rushes to her own bedroom and combs out her hair, making sure that it does not look frizzy and messy from all the cleaning.
She placed light makeup on her face, hoping to hide the haggardness displayed through her eyebags and wrinkles on her forehead. Working as Faerles at night has taken a toll on her body clock and skin care.
Her digital doorbell rings just as she finishes patting down the skirt of her dress.
She's here! Wendy thinks, a smile forming on her face. She reaches the main door and pats down her skirt one last time before opening it to welcome her new roommate.
Wendy, though, did not expect the woman on the other side of the door to be her new roommate. Her eyes widen in surprise as the ex of her boss stands at the entrance with a large suitcase beside her.
"Son Wendy?" Bae Joohyun asks in an unsure manner. She remembers this woman, she works in forbidden-name's café.
Wendy merely nods then forces out a smile. She gestures for the woman to come in and she does so, bringing in the suitcase with her.
"I'm Bae Joohyun," her new roommate introduces herself, bringing out a hand for Wendy to shake. "You mentioned on your notice that you're selectively mute, so I really don't mind if you choose not to utter a word to me at all."
Wendy, this time, throws Joohyun a genuine smile. She leads her to the kitchen and brings her hand to the dining table, making a gesture if Joohyun wants to drink tea or coffee.
"Oh, coffee would be great, Wendy."
Wendy nods then proceeds to grind some coffee beans just as her doorbell rings again.
"Ah, before I forget, Wendy," Joohyun starts, "I think that's my friend. I asked him to take the rest of my stuff up here since he's also moving to an apartment two doors from this one."
Wendy walks to the door just as Joohyun does the same as well. It's Joohyun though who opens it and greets her friend.
"Yoongi!" She says as the man on the other side of the door places two boxes on the floor between them. He grunts in acknowledgement and proceeds to look around the apartment.
"You got a nice place here," he comments, "it's really clean as well. Like as if a-" he pauses once he sees a familiar woman standing behind Joohyun.
He tilts his head to the side. "Miss Wendy," he says, greeting the silent woman behind his partner. The woman shyly looks back at him and waves her hand. "It's nice to see you here," he finishes.
