Prologue

The rising moon casted flickering shadows on the ground and around the clearing, giving the forest a look of peace and quiet, the only noise a stirring leaf or a scampering mouse, late for its curfew.

A pelt weaved in between the trees, heading towards the clearing with his head ducked, ears flattened, and tail lying low. Stalking towards the marshy area, he eventually poked his head out and made his way to the middle, the moonlight making his black paws look gray.

A light-brown head peeked around an evergreen, then soon stalked to meet the white tom with black paws. "Who are you?" she meowed softly. "A-am I dead? I don't recognize you."

"You are not dead, Birchstar," the tom meowed gravely. "I have something to deliver."

"Deliver? Like, for me?" The light-brown she-cat, Birchstar, stretched and licked her lips. "I would love for you to deliver me a frog."

"I have something bad. Worse than crowfood." The tom paused, letting the current ShadowClan leader drink his words in. "Danger is coming to ShadowClan. I have a prophecy for you as well."

"Who even are you?" Birchstar snarled, letting fear make her seem angry and disbelieving. "I won't let you weaken my Clan with lies! I bet you're from the Dark Forest, aren't you?"

The tom shook his head. "I am Blackstar, and I was ShadowClan's leader many generations ago," he meowed. "As I have said, I have a prophecy to give you."

Birchstar bared her teeth, but let her muscles relax. "I thought ThunderClan took care of all the prophecies."

"It seems it's ShadowClan's turn." Blackstar took a deep breath. "Olives or black water will destroy the Clan."

Birchstar's mind already filled with questions, and as if he read her mind Blackstar shot her a warning glance. "StarClan cannot answer all of your questions," he told her gently. "Maybe I can answer just one. Don't make it too specific."

Birchstar searched in her mind for several heartbeats before finally choosing one. "What is 'black water'?" she asked, her eyes wide with anxiety and fear.

"You chose unluckily. I don't have an answer." Blackstar began to pad away, his fur shimmering with starlight. He began to fade, along with the scenery around him, and Birchstar screeched with frustration.

"You can't leave your own Clan like this! How will my Clan be destroyed? Can we stop it? How will olives and water kill us? Will our cats choke? Drown? Answer me!"

But Blackstar was oblivious to her questions.

Birchstar woke up from her dream sore and uncomfortably hot.
