Curtis was the last to leave the class.
Just as he walked out a boy ran into him dropping his books and belongings in the process.
"Watch where you're going," Curtis said in annoyance to the boy before walking away. But halfway through something inside him snapped.
He was tired of walking away
For once in your life make yourself useful said his consciousness.
So he turned.
But he was too late
Curtis saw someone else crouching down to help the freshman. The freshman looked up and stared back at Curtis giving him a look of pure disappointment.
And that's exactly what I am
Putting up an emotionless facade, Curtis turned and walked away. On his way, he heard annoying remarks from people talking about the stupid party. And the idiot who started it all stood there with a wide grin, leaning on his locker.
"Stop smiling" Curtis snapped pushing Jake off his locker.
"I can't, your happiness is too contagious."
Curtis closed his locker with a slam heading for the entrance. All the while he ignored his best friend's ranting and focused on trying not to punch him.
His stunt in the morning was still fresh in his mind.
"-and she was like ba-"
"Don't you have detention?"
"Do you not wanna spend time with me?" asked Jake pouting.
"Go away and I'll be there at six"
"Fine. See you at six sugar plum" replied Jake wiggling his eyebrows.
He flipped him the bird in response.
...
Reluctantly Curtis got ready for the party.
He came downstairs dressed in a blue button shirt and headed straight to the door. Just when he was about to leave he heard someone clearing their throat.
More specifically his aunt.
He halted in his tracks and turned. There she was standing with her with her arms crossed and eyebrows furrowed.
Clearly, she was curious about where he was sneaking without telling her.
"Where do you think your going young man?"
"Out"
"Please elaborate"
"A party at Jake's," said Curtis looking elsewhere. When there was no response he looked up to see his aunt gaping at him.
"What?" he asked frowning.
Rose snapped out of whatever the reverie she was caught in and blinked twice, pinching herself discreetly.
The action was not gone past Curtis though.
What the hell is wrong with everybody
"No no no it's nothing sweetheart. It's just this is the first time you're actually socializing an-"
"Can I go now?"
"Aunt Rose," he said again a bit louder.
"Oh yes yes you may go.Have fun" she said with a small smile, still not over the surprise.
Curtis got into his car ready to leave but stopped the engine when he heard distinct shouting from a window. He turned and saw his aunt standing behind a window, mouthing something. With a sigh, he opened his shutter.
"I can't hear you" he shouted
Rose put her head out of the window and screamed
"I SAID DON'T DO DRUGS AND USE PROTECTION"
He immediately rolled the windows and drove away.
...
Curtis knocked on the door and was greeted by the butler. The forty-year-old man greeted Curtis with a smile.
"Good evening young man"
"As I said before its Curtis to you James" replied Curtis with a small smile. James was one of the few people Curtis was actually comfortable with. Growing up without a father figure, James was pretty much the only guy who came close to that title.
In queue out came Jake came with a wide grin. Unable to suppress himself he hugged his best friend tight, to which Curtis made no move in response, used to his silly behavior.
"I love you pumpkin"
"Get the fuck off me "
"Never," said Jake in a diva-like voice, standing in a weird stance with his hands on his hips. A few seconds passed and he burst into a fit of laughter, chuckling at his own jokes.
"Oh my god you are just a ray of sunshine," said Jake laughing harder.
"Whatever" snapped Curtis biting his lip to stop the smile that was threatening to spill.
By eight o'clock the house was full and the party was on full blast.
Everyone was dancing, laughing and looking like they were having the time of their life. All except for Curtis. He despised the smell of beer that was nearly everywhere. Hoping to find some peace and quiet Curtis went outside but they still he found more people.
They were everywhere.
Parties definitely weren't his department
Feeling a bit hungry Curtis made his way to the kitchen instead.
While he was on his way a hand touched his shoulder
Not again
"Wanna dance babe?" asked a girl leaning on his chest
get your sweaty claws off me he wanted to say but he held himself back.
Instead, he gently pushed her off with a no.
She muttered an incoherent saying 'your loss' and walked away.
The kitchen was no better either but Curtis somehow got through the crowd and reached the marble counters which were filled with food.
But fate had different plans.
The second time for the day, a body fell onto him causing Curtis to stumble backward due to the impact. It wasn't over yet though. The nineteen-year-old lost his footing and fell down to the ground with a thump taking the other person down with him in the process.
It was a guy and unfortunately, one that he hated.
Aiden the other boy got off of Curtis with a loud groan and rolled to the side. He glanced sideways and looked at Curtis with a smirk. Ignoring him, Curtis got to his feet and was about to leave until his voice stopped him.
"Walking away, just like the way your precious mommy did"
