Chapter 5
Aisling resides at her dresser, pulling her hair back into a ponytail. She wears a dark red long-sleeved sweater, a pair of jeans and a pair of red Comverse sneakers. Outside, rain continues to pour. Raindrops proceed to slide down the glass window. She collects her car keys from her dresser. Then she exits her room and heads downstairs.
"Where are you off to?" Kyleen asks, curious.
"Out. Maybe visit the cemetery. Maybe visit grandma". Aisling grabs and puts on her dark green raincoat.
"Oh, that's good. Seems I finally got through to you" Kyleen comments.
"Yeah, maybe". Aisling opens and closes the door.
Aisling pulls her hood up of her jacket. She ventures down the walkway to the car. She opens the door and settles into the driver's seat. She carefully proceeds to back out of the driveway. After a while of driving aimlessly, Aisling parks her car outside the entrance of the cemetery. She exits the car, walks over and pauses underneath the stone archway. She observes the many rows of headstones; coming to the realization that each headstone once represented someone that had once been alive. Slowly, she ventures through the entrance, up the main path and toward the dreaded headstone.
As she approaches the grave, the rain begins to pour harder. She freezes, knowing that she had reached the headstone. She turns to face the stone and puts her hand on top of the stone. For a moment, she allows herself to envision her grandpa's smiling face. Tension builds leading the buried sadness to take over, tears roll down her face. She removes her hand off the headstone and tightly crosses her arms across her chest. She continues to stare at her name craved into the stone. She bites the inside of her cheek, knowing quite well that she was losing the battle of suppressing the grief.
After a long while of grieving, she returns to the car. She sits down in the seat, closes the door and attempts to put her broken self-back together. Once she feels put together; Aisling starts the journey to someone, that she owes a long overdue visit too. Finally, she slows her car to stop outside a simple one-story small house. She shuts the car off, unbuckles her seatbelt and remains stiffly in her seat.
For the last four months, Aisling has been isolating herself from any sort of trigger to her serve pain from his passing. She sits still, feeling guilty. For months, she had only been informed of bits and pieces about how her newly widowed grandmother was adjusting. Aisling hadn't checked on her grandma; not once, until today. Mentally, she forces herself to exit the car and head toward the house.
Aisling stands on the porch. Rain drops hit the top of the roof loudly above her head. She knocks on the door. A pair of slow footsteps and a cane come closer to the door. An internal lock happens to be released. Then the door opens. Aisling provides a weak smile and greets her grandma.
"Oh, Aisling. How nice to see you". Her gray-haired grandma moves out of the doorway and ushers her inside.
"I'm sorry my visit is long overdue" Aisling apologizes, while she follows into the living room.
"Oh, it's okay honey. I haven't been up to anything exciting. Everyone deals with grief in their own way". Her grandma returns to sitting on the couch. "How are you?".
Aisling shrugs and lies that she is okay. Her grandma doesn't buy the lie of course. Aisling distractingly glances out the window.
"Kyleen has been concerned about you," Her grandma informs. "I've been worried too". Her grandma watches her granddaughter. "Why don't I make some tea for us?". Her grandma exits the living room and disappears into the kitchen.
On the side table; which resides by her grandfather's tan leather recliner, happens to be an antique wedding photograph of her grandparents inside a handmade wooden frame. Next to that picture is a photograph of Aisling and her grandpa comfortably residing by the fire pit at one of the sites at their favorite campground.
"Tea is on" Her grandma informs, returning to her seat. She places her cane next to the arm of the couch. "That picture of you two by the campfire is one of my favorites. I put a copy of it in the envelope. That Kyleen should've given you".
"Kyleen gave it to me" Aisling promises.
"Your grandpa loved camping. That's what he grew up with. Camping was the only trip his family and himself went on. You my dear, you defiantly inherited the love of camping from him" Her grandma explains.
Aisling looks up at her grandma with her eyes watering. "I'm so sorry I haven't visited sooner. I've been selfish. I should've been here for you. Helping you. I shouldn't have left it all up to Kyleen".
"Oh, honey". Her grandma relocates, sits beside her and hugs her. "Don't worry about it. Everyone deals with grief in a different way. After some time, we'll all be okay". Her grandma stares at the recliner. "Months have passed now and I still have mornings, where I behave that your grandpa is still here. That I will make him his coffee and toast. Come in here and then I have a moment where I remember that its just me in the house. I must sound stupid".
"I...you don't sound stupid" Aisling tells her.
"Don't lose your love for camping. Your grandpa would hate that" Her grandma advises.
"I still love camping. In a weird way, I feel like I honored him by going on the last trip" Aisling explains.
"So, you're gone camping" Her grandma understands.
"Once, First time in months. I really enjoyed my time with Preston" Aisling replies.
"So, Preston is his name. Kyleen said you went with someone on a camping trip. But she didn't say much for details" Her grandma informs her. "How many trips have you two been on?".
"Just the one. But we are planning another" Aisling answers.
"You know that's how I meant your grandfather. Our families camped in the same campground. I believe the modern-day kids call it a meet cute" Her grandma explains.
Aisling cracks an amused smile. "Yes, grandma. That would be considered a meet cute".
After a while of visiting and chatting, Aisling begins to head home. Her grandma walks her to the door. Her grandma thanks her for visiting. Aisling hugs her.
"Now, don't be a stranger. Come visit more" Her grandma tells her as Aisling steps off the porch.
"I will. I promise" Aisling replies. "Now you behave and stay out of trouble".
"Oh, I'll try". Her grandma winks at her.
Then Aisling ventures off to her car. Shortly after, she carefully exits the parking space and heads down the street. Kyleen appears to be in the laundry room, when Aisling arrives home.
"Visited grandma". Aisling resides at the hall tree by the front door.
"Good. I'm sure she enjoyed that" Kyleen states as she crosses the kitchen. She carries a plastic white laundry basket in her arms.
"Yeah. The visit was good. We talked about grandpa. She mentioned how her and grandpa had a meet cute" Aisling informs, while Kyleen pauses by the staircase.
"Meet cute," Kyleen understands, amused.
"That's legitly how she said it" Aisling confirms.
Kyleen laughs. "Seems grandma is hip to the modern terms".
"Yeah," Aisling agrees.
After assisting Kyleen with laundry, she answers a Facetime call from Preston. The screen changes from his caller ID to his face. He greets her and she returns a greeting.
"So, what are you up?" Preston asks, taking a seat on his bed.
"Not much. I visited my grandma today" Aisling answers. "We had a good visit".
"That's good" Preston replies.
"We talked. I learned some family history" Aisling explains.
"Learning family history is always cool". Preston moves a pillow out of his way to become more comfortable.
"Is that the Hogwarts crest?" Aisling asks, momentarily seeing the pillow.
"Oh, yeah". Preston seems embarrassed. "I'm a Harry Potter fan".
"Cool. So am I" Aisling informs.
"Oh, really. What house?" Preston asks.
"Gryffindor. You?" Aisling half asks.
"If I had to choose...I'd say Ravenclaw" Preston answers. "I guess I'll have to keep that in mind for Christmas. If we are still talking to each other by then".
Aisling gives him a weird look. "Why wouldn't we be associating with each other? I consider you a friend".
"I guess I figured that if there were no camping trips. We wouldn't really need to interact with each other" Preston answers.
"That isn't true. We're friends. Actually, you happen to be the only friend, that I'm on speaking terms with at the moment" Aisling informs.
"Well, I'm here to listen if you want to talk about whatever happened" Preston replies.
"My friend Maddie said I was scared to commit a friendship with you because we both share a love for camping. That I haven't dealt with my grandpa's passing. I know she was trying to help. But I felt like I was being pushed and I rudely exploded on her. You don't have to say it. I know I was in the wrong". Aisling sighs.
"I'm sure your friend will forgive you. Just give Maddie sometime and then just talk to clear the air. I'm sure everything will be fine" Preston assures.
"Yeah. Thanks for the advice. Seems like a good plan" Aisling replies.
There is a moment of silence.
"When do you want to do the next camping trip?" Aisling asks, curious.
"Uh,..". Preston opens the calendar app on his phone. "How about next weekend? Does that work for you?".
"Sure. Sounds good to me. Just inform me of a pick-up time. I'll let Kyleen know" Aisling answers.
"Yeah. Text you a pick-up time tomorrow. Have a good night" Preston replies.
"You too. Bye". Aisling hangs up the phone.
"So, another camping trip with Preston is in the planning stage" Kyleen comments, appearing in the doorway.
"Yes. Sometime next weekend" Aisling informs.
"And he is a Harry Potter fan. A Ravenclaw boy" Kyleen notices.
"Yes, he is. How long were you listening?" Aisling asks.
"Not long. Just that there is another trip being planned and you two are dorky Harry Potter fans" Kyleen answers.
"So, you pretty much heard everything" Aisling assumes.
"Yup. Pretty much everything" Kyleen confirms.
Meanwhile Renley enters her brother's bedroom.
"So, another camping date with Aisling" Renley gathers.
"Yes. Another trip" Preston replies.
"And a Harry Potter fan. Gryffindor girl". Renley proposes a question. "If it's summer, why are you mentioning Christmas? Why would you believe she would have nothing to do with you if there were no camping trips? Are you afraid to lose her?".
"Renley, you're kind of nosy" Preston tells her.
"Yeah. Nosy is one of my character traits. So is sarcasm" Renley explains, gaining an eye roll from Preston.
"Don't you have something to do?" Preston asks.
"Don't you have someone to crush on? Impress, actually" Renley asks, teasingly.
Preston lies on the bed and groans.
"Don't hate me because I'm right" Renley comments as she exits the room.
