SHYLA
"Alright, let's do it again. Are you telling him?" My best friend said encouraging me. It's easier to do something when you're motivated.
"Yes I am."
"Are you going to regret it?" She said, smiling widely.
"Yes I am." I replied and started feeling anxious again.
"Ugh, Shyla! No you're not. You're not going to regret it, okay? It's something you have to do." She said and I stayed silent. "Now, let's do it again. Are you telling him?"
"Yes I am."
"Are you going to regret it?" She asked and the phone started ringing. I checked who it was. Another unknown number.
"Hello?" I said, my voice sounded dull, I was so tired of thinking, I just wanted to go hide in my bed and never come out. I put the call on speaker phone.
"Hey, this is Aiden Byers. Do you remember me?"
I covered my mouth, trying not to scream. Come on Shyla, don't embarrass yourself right now. I looked over to Brooke, who was wide-eyes, waiting for me to answer.
"Yes, I remember you Aiden. How can I help you?" I immediately regretted my choice of words. It sounded like I worked in a bank or something like that. My face went bright red, and I was so grateful that Aiden couldn't see me.
"Well, we haven't spoken in a very long time! We need to catch up. How about we meet tomorrow at the mall?" He said. Was I dreaming?
"Don't you have a girlfriend?" I asked, and Brooke facepalmed. Now I really looked dumb. I could hear Aiden laughing on the other side of the call.
"I do actually, but of course I didn't mean to invite you to like, a romantic date. Did you think that-"
"Oh no, of course not. I was just asking a random question. But the mall sounds great. " I cut him off, making the situation more awkward. That was definitely not the way that I wanted to talk to him.
"Oh, alright. Great. So, I'll see you tomorrow. Is five okay?" He asked. I smiled unconsciously.
"Yeah sure, it's a date!" I said enthusiastically, not really thinking about what I was saying anymore.
"Uh, it's a friends date!" He said, sounding awkward before hanging up. The living room was silent, and I could almost hear my heart beating, or probably breaking.
"That was terrible!" I said and buried my face into a pillow. Brooke rubbed my back.
"It wasn't that bad... okay, maybe it was, but we can fix it! You're going out with him tomorrow!" She tried to cheer me up, but I just couldn't seem to feel happiness or excitement for seeing him again.
"We're going on a friends date." I said, sadness reflecting on my voice. My whole body was aching, I was out of energy. A shiver ran down my spine as I thought about what had happened.
My first crush was dating my high school friend, and I was going out with him in less than a day. Maybe it wouldn't be like the fairytale I had always imagined.
